Just to use the alternative animation you don't have to code anything. Just go to the data\anims\s_merc\ folder and replace "S_N_SHOT.gif" with "S_N_SHOT.gif.bak", which is in there. It should work, I presume.
That's why I am asking - why is it not used when it is there? When it is used for big merc? (Well I haven't tested it though, it may be flawed.)
I can (if desired) involve some coding and implement both.Like:
a) when you have something else in the other hand the one-handed holding would be shown, or if you don't aim much. Purely cosmetic, no impact on gameplay.
b) if you use no aim clicks, the one handed anim would be used, the shot would be faster, but with less accuracy... If you use aim clicks, the both hands holding would be used and the shot would have standard accuracy and speed. Gameplay tweak, more complicated.

Yo Sandro, Do you mean you are not happy with the game deciding which animation to use? If yes, then for my part, I would want the animation selected by the game, either by the action I am performing, in this case aim clicks for example, or by the merc profile, for example how big mercs fire differently. For my part, I shoot so many times, I would want this automated and ideally personalized in some sense.
If the player can choose the animation, I would want that choice to be sticky to the merc, meaning the next time I start the game and load the save, it will know what animation to use.
