Does anybody know how the game reads or uses animated sprites?

I have recently been required to change the colour of the the water fountains (fount1.sti) which include a 3 frame cycling animation for the water itself. Nothing has been changed apart from the colour of the water, which I have saved as a new sti and editing the tileset to make use this new file. However when it comes to using in the map editor the fountains no longer animate.

Anybody know why?

I just did a quick test. So far I am unable to recreate the effect that you describe. I have recoloured the water animation black and it just plays fine in the map editor. Can you upload your fount1.sti somewhere, so I can check the file?

I just used your file. The animation is playing fine.
I changed the tileset for the first map to tileset number 37 and renamed your file to FOUNT1.sti. The Editor plays your animation without any problems.

Animation of the fountain is probably stored in the jsd file. But how it actually works... no idea. Haven't worked with jsd edit in quite a while.

No, the animation is stored in the sti. How should the animation be stored in a jsd file? That file contains the information about its pseudo 3D Layout. Hawkeyes animation works fine, I just tested it myself. There must be something wrong with his Editor or Game.

Okay cheers, maybe it's a naming convention thing. Which is why I was suspecting there might be some code somewhere that handles these files differently? I'll really need to use a new filename otherwise it will conflict with the original fountains. Hmm maybe time to give Scorpion a call.

*edit*
Scratch that, Scorp came through pretty quick. I'm pretty sure the JSD does contain the animation info, though I haven't edited any. Maybe I have some Christmas Gremlins. Currently my new brown fountains work on a map for M10 but they crash my map in B1. Time for a bug hunt.

The animation is in the JSD file. If you look into the file for tilesets/37/fount1.jsd you will see that that the two flags STRUCTURE_FILE_CONTAINS_AUXIMAGEDATA and STRUCTURE_FILE_CONTAINS_STRUCTUREDATA are set. For regular structures you have only the flag STRUCTURE_FILE_CONTAINS_STRUCTUREDATA which means that the file contains the 3D layout. Animated have the second flag set too.

As far as i know the usual JSD editors only allow to change the 3D layout but not the animation info, but then i'm not very familiar with these tools, so maybe they actually can. Anyway, it should be possible to create an XML file that replaces the JSD file. I'm pretty sure i implemented it quite some time ago, but i'm not sure how much of it is in the trunk.

Thanks Birdflu, that's probably too techie for me (I'm no coder) but it's good to know that's where indeed the information sits.
