A couple of months ago, I started for the second time working on Under Barrel Weapons for JA2. The first time was back in July, and I did make a mess of it, so I decided to start it over from scratch. While I started with a lot of momentum, during the Christmas holidays the momentum burned out, and I left the project alone for a month or so, so I obviously had no idea how to continue it (my log keeping is a bit worse than my code commenting, since at least I do add the occasional comment).

So, since I don't see myself able to continue working on this project in the foreseeable future, I am posting my current Work In Progress here, in case anyone else is interested in continuing it. So, on to the code part.

DISCLAIMER:
As far as I've checked, the game should work and behave as normal. I have added the new weapon modes, that require an attachment to have an item class of either gun or blade, it supports semi-auto, burst or full auto attachment, and it should reload correctly. I can't recall if the bullet fired is from the UB weapon, since I think I had fixed it but I'm not sure. The last part I was working on, until I saw exactly how much needed change was the NCTH values, since I had to see which values should be taken from the weapon being fired (base weapon or underbarrel weapon) and which should be taken from the base weapon (raise cost, attachments etc). I have modified a few of them, but I have no knowledge of the NCTH system, so I can't really help.

So, tl;dr disclaimer, "Should work, no guarantees".

Patch based on revision 4826

The patch is also copied in the spoiler, in case anyone wants to skim through it.

Update: I inherited JMich's code and got it working on recent code (r5123, which is today). It works with both OCTH and NCTH, I should have tweaked all the important spots for this.

http://i39.tinypic.com/24o60ld.jpg

In this picture you can see Kelly firing a shotgun attached to his M16A1 (The bullet graphic proves it ain't a normal shot if you don't believe it Smile

http://i40.tinypic.com/fp887m.jpg

This is the masterkey shotgun. I plan to at least add the M26 MASS and some kind of underbarrel pistol/MP/smg, if such a thing exists. I'll then release a .exe, and a patch if people think this this should go to the trunk (I do).

However, two things are missing before I do that.

1) Pictures. For the Masterkey I only have the BigItem pic (thanks to smeag for providing this!), for the other weapons I have no pics. I currently use the Ithaca pics, which isn't bad but not correct. I'd be glad if pics could be provided, as I am inept at making non-icon pics.

2) I found a strange bug (system limit?): I can't attach any attachments to an attached weapon. To clarify: If i attach a silencer to an SMG, it's ok. If I attach that SMG to an AR, the silencer gets taken off. And I can' reattach it while the SMG itself is attached.

Same with ammunition: I can't replace ammo in the UDB while a weapon is attached. The clip I get is correct, but the new ammo is written. However, reloading an empty attached gun bay clicking into the environment works. I also made a change that lets you reload your attached gun simply by clicking with ammunition onto the weapon when its in an alternative fire-mode. As this is way easier, the reloading issue is kinda minor.

However, not being able to attach anything to an underbarrel gun is annoying. If anybody could give any insight into attachment behaviour if attachments are attached to attachments themselves, I'd be thankful. I remember not being able to reload a pistol that was attached to pants in the past,

So yeah. Help me with these issues and we'll have these new toys in the game in no-time Smile

Under OAS, it simply isn't possible to attach an attachment to an attachment (lets call it a level 2 attachment). Under NAS, you have a system called nested attachments where the game attempts to transfer all the level 2 attachments to the host weapon, much like the UGL always did with grenades. Ask wil473 for all the ways to exploit and abuse this system and all the reasons why it should stay exactly as it is (but bring coffee, it'll be a long session Wink )
EDIT:
Btw, I just wanted to add something about the stupidity of attaching a pistol/MP/SMG to a rifle and say you're free to look for SciFi/Fantasy mockups ... then I remembered this:

Didn't think about OAS. Tried it and ehm... I still can't change mags in UDB, but I am able to attach an SMG with an attached silencer to an AR. The silencer stays on, and it works. But I can't take it off or add new atachments.

This is bizarre. OAS shouldn't work better than NAS for this.

With underbarrel/2ndary weapons not only is there a need to 1)differentiate between attachments on 2ndary weapon and the primary, 2)allow some attachments to server both weapons.

1) a sound suppressor on DepressivesBrot's attached pistol, should have no effect on the M4

2) The F2000 scope should have a positive effect on (O/N)CTH for both FN F2000 5.56mm rifle and the attached 40mm launcher

I wouldn't mind not being allowed to have attachments on the 2ndary weapon for an interim release of this. Oh and a simple sound and weapon flash suppression modification have no effect on the 2nd weapon.

Bayonets - no attachments, already silent
under barrel shotgun - flash and sound suppression really isn't practical anyways, especially if you need it lightweight (as an attachment)
multi-shot grenade launcher - see above
pistol - well yes you can suppress it, but I'm with DepressivesBrot, the "tacticool" pistol mounted under a SMG or rifle is embarrassing...

You could just add two tags that would basically amount to and (or add one and make it a bitfield). A muzzle device that has 0 would only work on it's immediate host, i.e. either the carbine or the pistol. A Masterkey with 0 would keep all its attachments to itself and don't transfer them to the host.

As it currently is, boni from sights/scopes/lasers of the main weapon also apply to the underbarrel weapon. This is done code-wise, I had to go through all routines of OCTH/NCTH that have anything to do with aiming and firing a gun. Basically aiming is done via the main weapon, physical values (like gun range, recoil) are taken from the underbarrel one. This wasn't always easy, as sometimes it isn't clear for what a certain bonus is applied.

Theoretically, the underbarrel shotgun might feel a bit powerful, as its draw cost is that of the main gun (you raise that, the underbarrel one is of course raised too) and you can aim with a 7x scope... But in my eyes that is a clear deficit of the current CTH systems ( a shotgun shouldn't be super acurate, no matter the scope used).

I did not change anything for underbarrel grenade launchers, as they don't really work like normal guns.

The tags don't really help me. I can easily differentiate between attachments to the main gun and attachments to the underbarrel gun. Problem is getting the attachments there in NAS.

I didn't implement bayonets, that would require additional coding (gun changes into melee weapon in a certain fire-mode). without proper animations, this might look rather dumb.

If anybody wants to try it:

Build patch: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4217961/Build_r5123_ub.patch.html

GameDir patch: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4217963/GameDir_r1377_ub.patch.html

.exe: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4217983/JA2_EN_Release.exe.html

Easiest way to test is to hire Kelly with his 4th Kit, he's got the Masterkey.

If it is easy to differentiate between attachments, then it may be better to isolate the attachments on 2ndary weapons to its own interface screen. ie. stuff attached to the 2ndary weapon are only visible when you bring up its details.

Wil's bad idea hidden (EDIT6)
Toggle Spoiler

EDIT6: the more I think about it, my idea to use hardcoded attachment classes to control whether an attachment transfers attachments and NAS slots to the primary item is a really bad idea, sorry. Better ideas:

1) simply have it when the attachment is a weapon item, no attachments and slots are added to the primary weapon. Question is whether to exclude launchers from this, as there are pro's and cons to having the launcher round(s) available in the primary weapon's information screen.

2) have a new tag in items.XML governing if an attachment will transfer attachment/add its attachment slots onto the main weapon (DepressiveBrot's idea)

Under both ideas, if you want access to the attachment's attachments and NAS slots, you have to open up the details screen for the attachment. This also avoids the ever present problem of NAS slot conflict: different layouts with different slots that happen to have the same coordinates. Just keep the layouts on different interface screens.

Sorry for the mess above.

Hmm. I wanted the attachments to be shown where they belong, as attachments of the underbarrel gun...
For some reasons, this works (halfway) in OAS, so there must be some way to do it properly in NAS.

I guess what you're implying is moving those attachments to the same slot that underbarrel grenades are moved. I guess that would work (though I do not know how to do that), but that would only leave a maximum of one attachment... which might not be enough for some weapons.

No I'm suggesting the exact opposite to what you're wanting - attachments on the 2ndary weapon are not visible when you simply open up the primary weapon's details interface. To see the 2ndary weapon's attachments, you must open up the details screen for the attachment.

This avoids the problem of slot overlap, where slots from two different layouts happen to share the same coordinates. This is a very bad thing, though I suppose is a problem only if you decide on using a custom semi-realistic NAS scheme like I use (people seem to like it but it does take more work to avoid the overlap problem).

EDIT: I was mostly spinning in circles trying to figure out how to "activate" this non-typical NAS behaviour. A new tag to govern if an attachment adds both its attachments and NAS slots to the primary item would provide the most creative freedom.

Ok so essentially what we want to be able to selectively turn off the NAS feature where attachments and slots of an attachment are transferred up towards the primary item.

EDIT: Big slot? That's going to force a rethink of my NAS layout developed a year ago...

Wait. That is a feature? Ok... where do I turn that off?

Well, I made it a big slot as otherwise the shotgun picture would overlap with other slots. No deeper reason than that. I'm sure we could find a previously unused position.

Yes, it's a feature. There's a function that handles all the transferring, so a simple condition should suffice.
Haven't looked at that in a while, it's part of the all-purpose AttachObject function.

I've found the function you mentioned and altered it. Attachments can now be put onto a gun, if that gun gets attached to another gun, the attachments stay. However, it isn't possible to alter the attachments while the gun is attached, but that's more like a nuisance.

I'll check if this works correctly now and propably release it on the weekend.

Some bugs that I noticed:

Masterkey swallows ammo without loading itself in the map screen when attached to another gun.

Sometimes the ammo just disappears after a while... not sure if it's caused by saving/reloading or changing sectors yet.

I've updated the WIP version of the XML editor to enable the attachment data tab on the item detail form for guns. Also, any underbarrel weapons should have their attachment tag set to 1, so they can work in the editor.

Please specify:
did you try to reload like this?:

http://i44.tinypic.com/o56tqp.jpg

This doesn't work correctly if the gun is attached to another gun. That's what I meant in my first post in this thread.

Reload the gun by switching to a underbarrel fire-mode, and then drop the ammo onto the main gun (just like you normally relaoad).

Yeah, that's how I did it. Sorry, must've missed your comment about it earlier.

I wonder if there's a way to make it work. I'll take a look when I get a chance.

Thought of this while responding to something on the NCTH Iron Sights / pistol re-balance thread - has anyone seen if having a shotgun class weapon mounted under an assault rifle confers the Hunter/Ranger bonus to NCTH Aiming levels to the assault rifle?

Background: under Hunter and Ranger (2x Hunter) New Trait I think shotguns get a 1 and 2 NCTH Aiming Level bonus (reduction). Does this bonus get conferred to a non-shotgun weapon, when a shotgun is attached and the pair are in the hands of a merc with the correct trait.

Not sure how Flugente implemented it, since that was the point I gave up, but depending on what the bonus is, it should check either the Weapon in Hand (AR) or the Weapon Fired (Shotgun). So assuming we (or more importantly, Flugente, since I only skimmed that part) didn't miss any check, the bonuses should apply only to the weapons that they should apply to. For aiming levels, I think only the WiH should be counted, not the weapon fired, since when you are aiming a masterkey, you are actually aiming and shooting an AR.

The bonus to the Ranger trait is applied for reloading, and chambering rounds. It is not giving aiming boni to _underbarrel_ shotguns, as the aiming is done via the main gun (it does in OCTH, my mistake, will correct that).

The ranger trait doesn't reduce the aiming levels.

So how do those +5%/+10% CTH bonuses work under NCTH?

And don't tell me I've been restricting Igor and Manuel (hunters) to rifles for no reason...

ah, my bad.

Of course ranger trait gives aiming boni. It doesn't give more/less aiming levels, that's what I meant.

I'll correct my above post, so nobody gets any wrong ideas

Finally gotten around to implementing the UnderBarrelWeapons, and ran into a bit of a problem, though it may have been fixed by now: Under Rev.5280 the underbarrel is not recognized as an available firing mode on single shot only weapons.

Background: I was taking a break from cleaning up the attachments, and decided to see if I could get the Neostead to have two "magazines" by using the UnderBarrelWeapons system. Made a copy of the NeoStead ("Dual Feed Magazine"), got it to appear as a default attachment, and couldn't figure out how to fire it. Spent half an hour comparing my XML's to Data-1.13 and didn't see any material differences between the Masterkey and the "Dual Feed." Finally broke down and started a stock v1.13 game with Raider, and noticed that the only difference is that his primary weapon had burst/autofire modes. Set my Neostead to have a 1 shot burst, and the 2nd barrel became available.

Now I'm still waiting for the SVN to download a copy of the latest code/XML's, but I'm wondering if this has been noticed before?

Never seen that behaviour... I'll check it.

Edit: found the problem. I'll send a fix to RoWa that repairs both SingleShot and Auto-only guns. Thx for spotting that!

Excellent, now to wait for an easy distribution of the fixed .exe. I am planning on releasing an "ADvance CAPabilities" or "ADCAP" version of UC-1.13 v3.65 - where this underbarrel weapons feature will be abused to provide the following: Cobra Titan Derringer

The Cobra Titan Derringer will be a twin single shot gun that can switch between any combination of .45 Long Colt and .410 Gauge using item transformations. While I'm reasonably sure the primary weapon will eject the round when the item transform converts it to a different calibre (this is how merger transforms handle incorrect ammo), I'm not sure what would happen to the ammo of the attached secondary weapon. Hopefully it will be ejected to the merc's inventory.

Do you mean the underbarrel weapon changes as well during the transform? My guess is its ammo gets destroyed.

As long as it does not crash the game, no showstopper. I'm only doing this with one gun (though the scheme takes up five item indexes). The player will just have to remember to unload the 2nd barrel before reloading with "compatible" calibres.

Still best case scenario would be to have the under barrel weapon unload if it is being removed from existence in-game by a merger or HAM5 item transformation. I'll find out in a few days, not working on this until I get some other things completed.

I'm expecting to have UC-1.13 v3.70 "ADCAP" released by end of month.

Double Posting because I think I found a bug: I had a few minutes so I downloaded DepressivesBrot's newer rev.5346 exe to see if the under barrel(UB) weapon could be selected when it was attached to single shot weapons. (Yes thank you, the UB weapon could be selected now.) Noticed that the ammo loaded into the UB weapon was doing strange things:

The UB weapon seems to be stuck with whatever unfired rounds were in it prior to an unloading/loading action. This seems to include 0.
- attached UB weapon is unloaded via its details screen, on revisiting the details screen whatever ammo was unloaded is back.
- shooting UB weapon seems to properly deplete its magazine
- reloading the UB weapon via shooting seems to be working too
- an empty UB weapon when reloaded via the info screen for the UB weapon results in the ammo disappearing when leaving the info screen for the UB weapon
- trying to replace the ammotype currently loaded similarly results in the loaded ammo disappearing.

ie. Masterkey is loaded with 3/4 rounds of buckshot, go to the attachment's info screen to replace the 3/4 Buckshot with full 4 rounds of lockbuster, will produce a 3/4 Buckshot magazine item. On returning to the Masterkey's info view, you will find that it is still loaded with 3 rounds of Buckshot, instead of the 4 rounds you just loaded.

Yes, wil, that is a known bug I described earlier. The proper way to reload the Masterkey is via dropping ammo on it. If the Masterkey is attached to a weapon, selecting the underbarrel fire mode and then dropping ammo on it will correctly reload it, its just reloading via description box that is broken.

It tried resolving that error and found out that at some point during the reload process, the game seemingly forgets it has reloaded. I don't know enough about the whole attachment-tree complex to solve his.

Yeah, I vaguely knew there was a problem with reloading the UB weapon - just not the specifics, and I thought it was fixed. Is there anyway to disable the UB weapon's unload button? Right now it is quite an exploit to be able to magically produce magazines of shotgun shells.

Last night, I had time to produce the Cobra Titan Derringer and some test rounds for it - and looks like it will need to be shelved for now.

The Good:
- the game didn't CTD on transforming to variants with a different barrel

The Bad:
- the UB weapon's bullet, as expected, did not eject if the UB barrel changed calibres, and due to the bug the player does not have the option to unload the round
- the UB weapon seems to arrive loaded, (emptied both barrels, did a transform that changed the UB barrel and it appeared loaded)

EDIT: I won't be cutting it completely, I'll leave the five items in the XML as something to test future edits of the UB Weapon feature.

Wil473, I think the Underbarrel weapons will be anyway very marginal items, so if there's a small bug exploit available, I dont think it would be a massive problem for the game anyway.

There's a lot of ppl waiting for your new uber version of AFS, and better to have it with a few bugs or not at all.

Just my two cents!

Sorry to dissapoint, but the next release "UC-1.13 v3.70 ADCAP" will not have an AFS equivalent. It is meant to catch up with, and debug the mod for all of the new features that will be in the v4.xx mods (including AFS). Now that the Under Barrel stuff is implemented as far as I can, time to finally implement overheating weapons. If I can figure out a proper scheme, that is fast to implement, may even get sandbags in by end of the month.

There's a part of this I've been wondering about for a while - if the new extended sub-weapon framework (thanks to everyone who worked on it) can conceivably allow for bayonets, couldn't it also allow for an "attached" club, so you can strike someone with the gun?

Why would you attach a club to a rifle ...
And the answer is [Needs Animations], other than that butt-stroking and pistol-whipping are so universal that you might as well be able to toggle them on the base weapon without pointless 'attachments'

You wouldn't be attaching a club to a rifle, not exactly- I was under the impression that the game doesn't allow for an item to be a gun and anything else at the same time. So, the way I understood it, you would have to have a hand-to-hand class weapon "attached" in order to strike someone with a gun. Presumably these phantom melee attachments would be inseparable and present by default on every weapon, except perhaps the bigger MGs and that 2m long anti-materiel cannon from AIMNAS.

That's all assuming that I understand the system properly, which I admit is somewhat unlikely.
