NEW! http://www.mediafire.com/?jimfwgai6p5qpwm
(corrected some errors.)
(Just unpack and copy into your JA folder)

This will add Spooky from the SOG mod to your AIM roster, i started this a long time ago so can't remember if i covered all of the speech options. I reused his NPC speech to fill out his AIM speech. If there is a missing file, let me know and i can add it.

He's a little rough around the edges, maybe one of the artists can touch up that, but otherwise he is a fully fledged AIM Merc.

I wanted to give him his bandana, but time did not allow, maybe someone else can.

(These files will also give Hitman the correct ammo in KIT 2: 9mm -> .45)

Enjoy the latest addition to AIM.

...what? OH! Bandana! Ahah-aaaaah! Oh my.

Maybe Kazuya could 'standardize' him a bit. He's been around lately.

Hello,

Tais
I vote for adding this guy to standard 1.13, period!

Sorry Tais, but I can not agree with you here.

If we would do so v1.13 can not be considered as credible "modding base" any longer. Spooky has no "official" background and is not related in any form to the original JA2 game, UB or WF and so it's not the same like the other mercenaries we've already added to v1.13 like the UB mercs Stogie, Gaston etc. or lately the guys from Wildfire which is even controversial (!) like Monk, Henning & Co.

And what or better 'Who?' is the next on the wish-list? Should we add Jubilee from Urban Chaos/Deidranna Lives, Wildcat from Vengeance, Havoc from Renegade Republic or the other SOG'69 RPC's to v1.13 as well?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Spooky myself and Becoming X made a great job back in the good old times when he created him, but in my opinion Spooky should never become a part of the official v1.13 game and should stay a "mod-character" like the other characters I mentioned.

But it is a good cause when he is optionally available in a separate download for the users who want to play with him in v1.13.

Best regards; Schein

About Monk and those others may leave as well.

Maybe add an option button so you can select/pick an other combination of mercs?

@scheinworld: I agree with you about Spooky, thats why I edited my comment.

Kazuya already reworked ~10 JA/DG faces that would be awesome if we see that in official 1.13 in the near future. It is also on my TODO list to externalize the veterans laptop site to XML. In that case we can remove veterans from the site that will return to 1.13 Smile

Thanks for Spooky Off_topic! I had never played the SOG mod, and I am quite impressed with the quality of the speech files included with this character (much better and more believable than the english speech files of the wildfire mercs to be honest...)

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that you included MercAvailability.xml instead of AimAvailability.xml, which is necessary since you meant Spooky to be a AIM merc. Also, you should include in your pack Soundprofiles.xml, or else Spooky will be mute. No biggie, I managed to sort this out myself and make Spooky work just fine, but it would make it easier for less knowledgeable players if you included these files in your pack (and save you lots of questions). Thanks again!

*Also, would anybody know about a good face pack which would contain a portrait that could pass for that of a Vietnam war veteran? Spooky's portrait stands out a little too much for my taste compared to the other portraits.

Big leap in quality here, just like with the Wildfire mercs. (Can't stand playing with those guys.) Maybe have all of the unofficial mercs be there as an addon option instead?

I actually think that Spooky's sound files blend in very well with that of the vanilla mercs. As for the portrait, I have found a good temporary solution, by using one of the default IMP portraits (specifically that of the grizzled mean-looking guy with the long greasy hair). The voice blends in very well with the portrait. If you want to try this, just add this info to Spooky's profile in the xml.

I have also made Spooky a M.E.R.C. guy instead of a AIM guy. That way, you won't notice that he doesn't have specific sound files for his hiring, re-hiring, firing, or salary raises...

He actually should have those sound files, if there not there i can add them. He's NPC speech is suitable for them.

I thought i had them all covered, but it was a while ago when i started him, i can have a look at the weekend myself, but if anyone notices missing sounds let me know.

As for the portrait, maybe Kazuya can work his magic.

P.S. Thanks for the info on the sound pack etc...

If someone has major issues with new mercs in game, why not make some kind option in the initial game settings, "Allow 3rd party recruitments options to AIM" or something like that. Simple.

Yes. I don't really know what to think of this kind of content adding either, but if you have to, it might be a good idea to use a separate vfs folder as some kind of 'semi official addons' -deactivated in the default profile.
And give it a neutral name, calling it WF when those mercs were added must be among the top list of most confusing things.

This file includes the ones i forgot to add for Spooky: http://www.mediafire.com/?48oyq5z8caw340i

It also contains a working model of Reuban in the Aim roster. His Bio & equipment are not fully finished yet, but i've sorted out all the speech needed to be an aim Merc.

I'm not the best at animations, so hopefully someone good at that kind of thing can sort them out and reupload them.

If we would do so v1.13 can not be considered as credible "modding base" any longer.

1.13 has long ago diverted from being a modding base and is now more a package that will give you a total new ja2 experience, if you want a modding base go help develop SMP, that's a modding base.
Lots of people still try to keep holding on to a "vanilla ja2" standard which has left the building the second that people started adding new items and features.
After adding the WF mercs to the 1.13 roster some people have been complaining that they dont like them or they're not part of the vanilla experience, on IRC we also get visits from people that want to disable all the stuff that 1.13 enables.
These people should just not install 1.13 as it's completely useless for them to do so.

I guess there's only one way to finish the bullshit about not adding "non official" mercs to the roster, add an ini or starting window switch to choose between the original roster or the extended roster, everyone happy.
The externalized merc profiles and paged AIM roster wasn't made for nothing, add each and every merc that meets certain quality requirements to the default 1.13 package and make a switch for the whiners that think it doesn't look correct that you get the freedom of more choice..

I'd be with Tais here, after more than 10 yrs i think people embrace change. I mean, it's not as if anybody is forcing you to hire them. I think its cool we can add new Mercs, it adds variety and scope for change. And lets face it, JA 1.13 has been viewed as a mod, not a modding base for a long time now.

Could somebody upload the original spooky face files from Vietnam SOG? I have the feeling that somewhere along the creation of this face, some subpar decisions regarding the graphics format were made. I'd like to know, what Spooky used to look like, before I try out my magic wand.

Spooky's voice files are excellent, everything is there. Like i said in the OP, the image needs a bit of work. But he's a great/unique character.

I made my own Spooky mod way back before the add additional mercs thing came. Like Charlie, he was a MERC 'cause I felt I didn't have enough material for AIM. I'll try this out soon as I'm done with my current game, I like to see how Off_Topic did it.

@Off_Topic I have my own set of mercs that I've been working on for while now. I'm wondering if it's okay that add your Spooky mod 'cause I have a couple of guys who're friends with him, and I'm pretty sure your speech set-up is better than mine is.

Hi watchman, i basically took his NPC speech files and used them to fill out all the AIM speech files needed, hiring, answer machine etc... then added them to his Merc.EDT files. I might have missed a few, like Crepitus encounters so i'll look over it at the weekend.

Hello Tais,

You know I appreciate your effort for the community very much and you also helped me with updating Kermi's archive in the past a few times and I'm grateful for that, but I have to say your last posting style is really arrogant and ignorant.

Comments like "[...] if you want a modding base go help develop SMP, that's a modding base [...]" are just not okay.

I love JA2 and v1.13 probably in the same way as you do, but more from a modders point of view and I can tell you that it is very time consuming to adapt a mod to v1.13 which is always in progress. Don't get me wrong that's absolutely okay and it keeps our favourite game and this community alive, but when you say me now that v1.13 is no modding base anymore but a mod all modmakers or modding interested people who are left (many have been already disappeared, because of such way of thinking and attitude) can directly stop their work now.

We just copy the best files from all existing mods which have been ever made (Urban Chaos, Deidranna Lives, Renegade Republic etc.) into current v1.13 and say to all remaining modmakers: "Please stop working on any new mods, just give us the new files you created and we implement them into the new uber-mod v1.13 in case "we" think it's good enough."

Are you the one who has the right to decide how v1.13 should be and all other people who don't share your opinion about the future of v1.13 are just "whiners" as you call it?

Well, I'm proud to be a whiner then!

lol wut? All I am doing is throwing out my opinion about 1.13 in a sane discussion.

Scheinworld
Comments like "[...] if you want a modding base go help develop SMP, that's a modding base [...]" are just not okay.

It's the truth, 1.13 is not a modding base anymore, it has become a mod on it's own, with only one goal, bring the best features/additions to ja2, wether it be code changes, new items or well known mercs from alternative versions of ja2.
The discussion we're having now is wether we should or should not add a character from a mod that's part of the pit's and ja2's glorious modding history.
As far as I know SMP was created because 1.13 was becoming to much of a chaos (hard to keep up with changes) because of requests for changes by modders and the constant amount of additions by coders, a new base version of ja2 was needed to create a stable ground for mods.

Scheinworld
I love JA2 and v1.13 probably in the same way as you do, but more from a modders point of view and I can tell you that it is very time consuming to adapt a mod to v1.13 which is always in progress. I started programming for 1.13 because of a certain well known modder's requests so dont say I dont know how modders have to struggle to get the game to do what they want because I have been hanging on IRC with him for around three months continuously and I'm pretty sure that they're very much honored to see their hard work end up in 1.13

Scheinworld
We just copy the best files from all existing mods which have been ever made (Urban Chaos, Deidranna Lives, Renegade Republic etc.) into current v1.13 and say to all remaining modmakers: "Please stop working on any new mods, just give us the new files you created and we implement them into the new uber-mod v1.13 then in case "we" think it's good enough."

We're talking about a character from a mod that hasn't seen development in several years as far as I know, It's a mod that's part of ja2 modding history or could be put in a hall of fame, to me it's more a reward for all the hard work that was done on creating this character by giving him a new life inside 1.13...

Scheinworld
Are you the one who has the right to decide how v1.13 should be and all other people who don't share your opinion about the future of v1.13 just "whiners" as you call it?

Do you decide then? and the only people that I called whiners are the ones that want to turn 1.13 into vanilla ja2 (and thereby make it useless for them to even install 1.13)

Scheinworld
Well, I'm proud to be a whiner then!

I think you should read again what I said because I think you have missed my point there

Okay, I casted some spells and everything is ready for the sti creation. However, I have a question, I'd like to ask, before I start. As some of you might have noticed, spookys 48x43 face sticks out, when it is compared to the rest of the AIM roster. There is a simply reason for this. Spookys head is smaller than the rest and his eyeline is a lot lower than the rest. My question is now, should I create a new 48x43 picture that is a bit more "zoomed in"? To show you what I mean, I created a little picture. The left Spooky is the one that I would create, while the right Spooky is the original picture.
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8282/spookycomparison.png

I also created a new bigface picture, because in the old one, Spooky is out in the open and the background is rather bright. I created a version, where he is in the middle of a dark jungle. Personally, I think this is more fitting his character and putting him in front of a dark greenish background saves some colours for the palette.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/8972/spookybig.png

The new anims for the 90x100 are done, except that I didn't create the eyebrows up and eyebrows down frames, because that would be rather pointless. So what do you guys think?

The whole face lower than everyone elses never did bother me. But the zoomed-in version does help Ol' Spooky fit in better. Can't see any reason why you shouldn't.

Great job Kazuya, I'd also go with the left picture, fits perfectly between the other mercs.
About the eyebrow animation, maybe you could make his eyes move instead (the direction he's looking in) so that he will still have a little bit of a dynamic face?
So for example look at the user and back or the other way around?
