Hi; the other day at work some stuff wasn't going right and for some reason, the words "Damn it to hell!" ran through my head over and over and it took me a few days but I totally figured it out, and remembered it was the Schwarzenegger-sounding merc from JA2, and now I have a hankering to play this classic again.

I dug up my old dusty CDs (looks like it's not "Gold", and when I installed it and ran it it says it's version 1.03).

I tried doing some research on these forums about which mods/patches/etc. I should be using, but honestly it's a little overwhelming; apparently there have been eighty thousand mods since I last played this game.

I was just wondering if anybody could recommend a patch/mod list that I should install that would give me a classic "what I remember from 10 years ago" kind of experience, but maybe with annoying stuff cleaned up, or better graphics, higher resolution, any overpowered/unfair stuff fixed, difficulty level tweaked, whatever. I never finished it the first time around, so I don't need new missions, etc.. I vaguely remember having an awesome but sometimes frustrating experience the first time around. Like it felt fine most of the time, but occasionally out of the blue something would totally destroy me in a way that seemed unfair (killed by impossible shot... and I think I got fed up and quit at some palace getting mauled by jaguars over and over again or something).

I see some people like 1.13, some people like 1.07, and there all these named mods (or total conversions?) like Wildfire around. What should I get?

Thanks!

The current stable release of 1.13 would be a good start. It's available from http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218334/Downloads

A clean install from your old dusty CD somewhere outside the "Program Files"-folder is recommended, "C:\JA2" will work.

NCTH (New Chance To Hit) is one of the new options that I'd probably recommend turning of for now. It's a new targetting logic, featuring a new targetting "circle" - very promising, but it's still being improved.

For any other options: Just browse the forums, say hi to the guys in #bearpit IRC or ask!

there are many new options that do not go with the "classic feeling".

"new chance to hit" means that (at least in the beginning) Ira with pistol makes more damage (at five tiles from enemy) than three guys with machine guns taken together.

"new inventory" has many, many strange bags and pockets, but also means that a big, strong guy like Grizzly can not take a crowbar with him to the next sector if he happens not to have the right size of pocket on him (or if he does not want to leave his gun instead).

but sorry for the rant, you had problems with those bloodcats. now the "traits" system can keep you safe (as long as you do not go to their lair). you just have to keep Shank (that anemic guy from prison cellar) or Flo (quite useless french girl) in your team - they are now called "scouts" and with their holy presence they avoid ambushes.

so there is much to find up - but on the other hand: if you'll get familiar with all those ini files, you can tune the game just the way you like :wave2:

He was not mauled by a bloodcat ambush somewhere in the wilderness but by those in meduna. JFTR.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I did some more forum browsing and was torn between 1.12 (official patch?) and the 1.13, but ultimately decided to go with 1.13. Honestly, I'm a little overwhelmed with all the extra stuff (I'm not a super hardcore sim kind of guy)... it was complicated enough as it was without all these pockets and vests and weapon attachments and double the kinds of ammo, etc., etc.!

But in general, wow, super respect to all the guys that worked on it. Incredible; even more incredible that it's a fan mod. The increased resolution is making my eyes bleed a little less Smile and there are a lot of other great things. Super awesome. Yeah, I don't really know what the NCTH thing is, but I left it on for fun. I guess I have some research to do. New inventory is a bit much, and will take some time to get used to (can't climb walls with a backpack on?), but too late to switch now - just liberated Drassen, and having some serious nostalgia flashbacks. Love it.

Thanks,

Yes, equipped backpack prevents climbing and consumes more APs.

I think I would have trouble climbing a roof without a backpack, much less with one loaded down with mortars and the like. You can put the backpack in your hand slot and replace it once you're on the roof or you can just shift-B and drop all backpacks at the start of a fight and pick them up after it's over. I think most of them have penalties to stealth and APs. Anyway if you're playing 1.13 you should look at the thread for hot keys. It gives a lot of really useful time saving information.

All backpacks have the same AP penalty (20 iirc). It's really not advisable to run around with them in combat, that's the domain of combat packs. Backpacks are meant for strategic transport as long as you don't have access to vehicles.

Yeah, I was wondering why my super agile imp was so slow and crappy during fights - didn't think about the backpack since his total weight% wasn't super terrible.

Thanks for that and the other tips - I did find out yesterday about the ctrl+shift+f,a,m after a big fight which gets all the ammo unloaded and stacked in crates (although it took me a few minutes to figure out how to split the crates back up! Very Happy ), and that has been super helpful.

Anyways, I'll migrate on over to the 1.13 subforum if I have more questions (which I do!)
