We've decided to migrate both BP and JAG to new servers in the upcoming week(s). Of course, we will do our best to migrate the latest and best version of the database when we're doing the switch, but just in case you'll one day get an error when accessing the forum/site, you know why.

Since migrating to a new server implies changing the IP that the domain is bound to, give about 24h for full propagation when we do it. To be more clear, these are the steps:

1. Install forum on a alternate domain on new server (probably bears-pit.com)
2. Copy over relevant data.
3. Test run it
4. ANNOUNCE HERE forum and site are going down for move.
5. Close forum, export latest DB and update new forum.
6. Change DNS settings to point main domain to new forum.
7. Open new forum and wait for domain propagation.

JAG will also be upgraded to a new version of the CMS, so that will stay down a bit longer.

UPDATE:

I've taken a look at the database and it's huge. 250mb SQL file. And since we haven't pruned the posts in a long while, now it's time to do it.

We'll go for topics that have less than 1-2 replies first, older than 1 year and skipping "treasure" boards (that contain historical posts or precious info). And we'll see how small we can get the database.

Greetings everyone,

I know it might break some members hearts but along with threads with no replies or just 1-2 replies a very tempting target are those with a huge number of replies such as movie of the day, joke of the day etc. With such threads at a stroke we eliminate many megs and what's needed basically is to get the overall weight down from 380 megs to under 250 so that will take some doing.

Anyway the moderators will work something out trying ever so carefully to prune expendable threads ..... those which might have been the latest hot gossip some time back but most everyone lost interest and now they are deserted.

It simply needs to be done because in it's present state the forum cant be migrated because it's concentrated weight is simply too immense.

So it's either a lot of small topics or a combination of small & large which makes more sense.

Whatever happens .... please dont go gunning for the mods or admins. It's something which should have been done gradually and regularly along the way but that's how we got into huge trouble some years back by overlooking the regular cleaning till the forums weight finally overwhelmed us forcing a host shutdown.

You dont really want to lose this place do you ??? it gotta get a serious weight reduction soon .....

Regards

Bearpit

Since the forum is running on a different URL, there might be links missing/bad all over the place.

That should be solved when we move the forum to its original domain and close down old site.

So far we're keeping the old one up just in case, until we're sure the migration went fine.

Migration of BP forum officially complete!

Now both domains, bears-pit.com and ja-galaxy-forum.com load the same forum (of late UBB supports multiple domains).

Next on the list now is the reinstallation of JAG.

Some users experience weird redirects for the http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com domain. I've checked and apparently our DNS service (Network Solutions) hasn't deleted yet the old pointers so basically the domain is direct both at correct server IP and to 208.91.197.27, which is their default Under construction page.

I've removed manually their redirect (twice, to be sure). Hopefully they will go away in less than 24h.

Just wanted to say thanks for your efforts, first to get this site up and running, and second, to keep it up all these years.

It's not like Darwin claimed .... competition and scrambling to gain an advantage for survival but co-operation and a co-operative effort in which many have participated and freely donated their time and expertise in various fields to bring to fruition, maintain and expand.

Participate and enjoy ..... maybe someday the majority of the planets inhabitants will see it that way and work together to create a better place for all to share.
