I don't know who's idea it was to send 70 soldiers to attack Drassen the first time you capture it but I can only get up enough militia between two sectors (one joins the other) to defend with 40 militia.... it doesn't work out well. The result is mass rape. All of my 40 are killed while the enemy suffers a measly 5 or 6.

Is there a way to fix this? This is totally insane. 70 vs 40!? Holy crap! And they have motars... and of course the militia either doesn't or can't have that. So this feels incredibly unbalanced. There must something I can edit??? Someone please help me?

In the INI editor (root directory of the install) STRATEGIC EVENT SETTINGS > TRIGGER MASSIVE ENEMY COUNTERATTACK Set it to FALSE and you should be good.

....Well I don't want it COMPLETELY off. I just don't want it to be 70 enemies at once! That's too unbalanced. Why does it have to be one extreme or the other? Can't I just reduce it to the amount of militia the player can have in one sector at a time, 40?

Well if you take the time you can peruse the settings in the ini editor. There are plenty of settings in there that tweak the way the AI works. Most of them even have explanations.

Or you could always wait to talk to the forman in the mine portion of Drassen, the counterattack doesn't get triggered until you talk to him and start getting income

The issue isn't when they attack, its how many militia are allowed per sector vs how many enemies are allowed per sector. THAT value is very very out of whack. Even if I waited a week, the issue would still happen. There has GOT to be a way to correct this... does anyone know?

I tried holding up in a building but LOL they won't enter! The enemy soldiers just wait outside. A few of them come in, but most of them stay outside and wait. So that didn't work. I used to hold up in buildings all the time before, that isn't working now. That's the only way I know how to deal with that many enemies at once, bottleneck their advance so their numbers are more manageable. I tried shooting weapons, making every noise I could but they were all just grouped up together outside. The bar is the only one that works for this, all the other buildings have too many windows and civilians constantly block entrances and I can't move them anymore... that feature seems to be gone now. Sad

Thanks! That's one problem gone. Unfortunately, I still can't figure out how to control how many enemies are allowed to enter a sector at a time.

Is the enemy's unwillingness to enter buildings a bug or something? I don't remember that happening with the vanilla version. You'd think they'd try to storm in... but they just wait outside. I actually conducted an experiment. I waited for an hour and none of them came in after killing a few of them that tried. I went outside and they were gone, they had spread out and weren't even interested. I tried shooting at one of them to let them know where I was but none of them tried to enter. Very strange.

If someone knows of a strategy that works with 6 or 7 mercs vs 70 enemies, I'd like to see it!

I use mines, remotely detonated c4 and grenades (tear and mustard are nice for this). Also, I leave the militia to be cannon fodder while I stay a bit in the back and use burst/nades whenever the enemy is clustered. Tends to work most of the time, especially if you rig the sector properly.

And where do I get the money for this? LOL I've done that before after building up enough money to be able to afford it, but I'm talking about the beginning of the game when you're poor and don't have money for lots of explosives... not to mention the enemy spawns in different places every time and they come from both sides... and I think maybe the bottom. I don't have the man power to cover that much area or enough money for such a large amount of explosives and mines.

Uhm, yeah, dunno about vanilla maps Sad
I'm playing 1.13 with WF maps and I usually go to the SAM site and dig up enough mines to litter Drassen mine while training militia in the first two sectors. As for the enemy coming from different directions, they're bottlenecks in each direction and I'm not planting mines in every square around the sector. As for the money, you can make a reasonable amount with selling everything you're not using from sector inventory.

Yeah I've been doing that. I didn't know you could steal mines... how do you do that? I'm guessing you use the metal detector to flag them... then what? I don't remember being able to do that in a previous version of 1.13.

A higher lvl/wis/exp merc can detect mines even without a metal detector. After that you just defuse them (ctrl+click on them). However, if your explosive skill isn't high enough, you can go kaboom, so save ahead.

Funny that even The Manual (yes, the ancient vanilla manual) tells you how to unearth mines. Anyway, there's not one, but two threads over in the 1.13 Combat/Weapons Academy subforum that deal solely with defending Drassen mine on various game stages in various versions, the first thread grew too long at 12 pages(!)

Unfortunately, I still can't figure out how to control how many enemies are allowed to enter a sector at a time.

It's in the very beginning of the _options.ini; max_number_[enemies|creatures|militia|civs]_in_tactical.

This controls how many of them are on the map during a tactical fight at one time. If the attacking group has more members, they replace every fallen one by one until you killed them all.

Drassen has a famous bar.
Plus, there is a (exploity but still) way to hold it off:
If enemy squad is moving on strategic map towards your sector, and you order your squad to move towards their squad, they will wait for you on their ground. If you cancel movement order, they have to spend time to move again. Therefore, one solder can hold off any number of troops indefinetly by spending 1 minute moving towards each enemy group, then canceling move order, every hour. You can have your wounded solder do it, and meanwhile, your assault squad can take those enemies sector-by-sector, until there are enough left for your militia to handle.

Plus the threads DepressivesBrot mentioned.

I actually like this since its really fun to defend against.

Yo, about the militia outnumbered by enemy (especially if you set max enemy squad higher, and left max militia at 20) - you can check these settings in the ini editor:
; Militia overall power during autoresolve battles - abilitiy to hit enemy and not being hit by enemy. Value can be also
; negative, meaning the militia will be weaker.
GREEN_MILITIA_AUTORESOLVE_STRENGTH_BONUS = 0
REGULAR_MILITIA_AUTORESOLVE_STRENGTH_BONUS = 5
VETERAN_MILITIA_AUTORESOLVE_STRENGTH_BONUS = 10

; Flat bonus to Militiamen Action Points.
GREEN_MILITIA_APS_BONUS = 0
REGULAR_MILITIA_APS_BONUS = 0
VETERAN_MILITIA_APS_BONUS = 5

; Percentual bonus to Militia total precalculated CtH every shot. (100 here means the militia has always CtH doubled.)
GREEN_MILITIA_CTH_BONUS_PERCENT = 0
REGULAR_MILITIA_CTH_BONUS_PERCENT = 0
VETERAN_MILITIA_CTH_BONUS_PERCENT = 10

; Normal and energy damage is reduced by this many percents.
GREEN_MILITIA_DAMAGE_RESISTANCE = 0
REGULAR_MILITIA_DAMAGE_RESISTANCE = 0
VETERAN_MILITIA_DAMAGE_RESISTANCE = 10

; Determines bonus to assigned weapon and gear quality (coolness).
GREEN_MILITIA_EQUIPMENT_QUALITY_MODIFIER = 0
REGULAR_MILITIA_EQUIPMENT_QUALITY_MODIFIER = 1
VETERAN_MILITIA_EQUIPMENT_QUALITY_MODIFIER = 2

You can tweak them to make militia more likely to handle more enemies.
Also good, if you don't want to replenish your lost militia over and over due to them being wiped out every time a group of 20-40 enemy elites come.

... coming through...

You could just pull out of Drassen and let them have it back for a while. Attacking is more fun than defending anyway. Wink

Or do it my way - purchase ~50 TNT/HMX with remote detonators, hire Barry for a day, and let them come...
