Hello everyone,

I recently re-picked up JA2 in the steam sales, installed it, and when I try to run it it plays the first seconds of the first intro movie thing, and then the screen just stays black.

I've tried looking for a solution online but it looks like no one is having this problem.

I have tried to reinstall twice now with no success, can you guys help?

Thanks

My anti Win8 sentiment would say "upgrade to Windows 7"

To be fair, that would have been easier than what I had to do. Razz

This is for anyone in my boat:

Turns out all I needed to do to get the game to run, was install v1.13, which was what I was intending to do anyway. However after doing this, the game ran really laggy. To fix this, you:

The solution:
...is to make JA2 engine run on WineD3D instead of regular DirectX. WineD3D is a component of Wine and is generally used to run Windows apps on non-Win systems, but can also be used on Windows.

How to do that:
1) Download wined3d.exe from http://www.nongnu.org/wined3d/
2) Don't run the program! instead, extract it's contents with 7Zip or somesuch http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
3) Copy ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll from extracted $SYSWIN folder into the root folder of your JA2 installation (e.g. C:\Games\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\)
4) Run the game. It may take a bit longer to start
5) Enjoy one of the best games ever in as high FPS as your hardware can handle

Thanks to phoenicksCZ for that last fix.

This was on the Steam Forums, posted by Reknot

"And so I found a quick and easy way of getting it to work.

Steps;
1, Install Jagged Alliance 2
2, Download and extract 1.13 FullRelease 4870
3, Download and extract 1.13 Update for 4870
4, Edit in 'Ja2.ini' in your game folder
4a, PLAY_INTRO = 0 [It's the intro that borks up the start process]
5, Now open properties on ja2.exe and in Compatibilty check
5a, Run in XP SP3 mode
5b, Reduced color mode, 16bit mode
5c, Run as Administrator."

I followed his suggestions, and it works like a charm.

I added the fix and a short ReadMe to the SVN GameDir:

The game works in window-mode if you adjust the ini editor settings and Ja2.exe properties as mentioned above, even without copying or extracting these files.

You should delete point 4 in your readme file and include it in point 3. You cant set your desktop to 16 bit color mode in Windows 8. The only thing you can do is to configure the compatibility settings of an application to 16 bit color mode.

^This has solved multiple problems for me with different games. I have a whole mess of GOG games that I like to play.

So far these .dll files have fixed:

Crusader: No Regret - Only movies were jerky, so I dumped it in that file folder. Bam! Fixed!
Arma Gold
Icewind Dale

I'm not sure that this will fix every choppy Windows 8 vs. old game issue, but it has worked for all the ones I have ran in to.

Unfortunately this is not working for me AT ALL.

As I explained in the other thread I bumped just now, even after finding the exact right version of those files to even get the game to start, it still runs sluggish and laggy, just 10% less shitty than before.

Still looking for the ideal solution! I love this game, but never played UC before and like to get around to that now.

Disabling the intro got the game working for me, but even after trying all of these ideas, I still can't get it to recover after alt-tabbing to the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get alt-tab to work in Win8?

P.S. - There's no ddraw.dll file in the wine3d.exe...

My old computer finally die on me so i bought a laptop, came with win 8...
Tried all the things above (and more), nothing worked (the game runs but was sluggish as hell).
Except if you select to play on windows mode, it works very well then but it is impossible to change the size of windows (you could however make it bigger by decreasing the resolution of your screen, still not great though)
So i decided to "draw the big gun" and i installed Visual Box, an emulator of older windows version.
And miracle it works perfect (and i'm running it from an average laptop).

Now installing Visual is not difficult but it take a bit of time.
More important you will also need to have a previous Windows 98/xp/7 installation CD, otherwise it doesn't work.
I was damn lucky to have an old windows xp installation cd...
No other way than the hard way Smile

Download this version of the software(Because at this date there are newer versions that didnt work for me):
http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/nongnu.org//wined3d/1.1.37/wined3d.exe

Then use the 3 files from the folder "SYSDIR"
Enjoy the best game of all times, with the best mod ever.

Ok, this fixed the performance issues (slowdown stuff) for me on Windows 8.1. BUT, now the campaign map is unusable/blurry, looks like this:

PLEASE HELP

Hi,

I'm a bit late to the party, but I also had the problem with the strategic map looking bad (with gray static all over) on Windows 8.

Turns out disabling the option ,,show alternate strategic map coloring'' fixed the problem and the map looks OK now Smile
