Hi, i started playing JA 2 some time ago and gave up by frustration.
It was my fault too : i immediately knew this game was great (too bad i missed it at release) and to not spoil my fun i restart in expert difficulty very soon and next decided to play it true iron made.
It was retrospectively a bad idea...
Damn i must have restart like 50 times, i know the beginning by heart but only visited Omerta/Chitzena/San Mona/Drassen.
Well i came back playing it recently, allowing me one save/load when i can't do otherwise.
My main interest now is to balance thing but it can be quite complicated because i have never been far in the game.
I have started to balance mercenary stats/costs (some are way out of balance IMHO)and other little things in the ini after reading carefully all i could about it (fantastic job this 1.13).
Now i need some more info to go further so i will appreciate greatly if you can answer the following questions (setting : expert difficulty, everything "normal", enemies don't drop all, 1 IMP, NCTH, ton of guns).
1 -
How many days to complete a "normal" campaign with these settings considering taking your time without abuse (and not knowing the game by heart) ?
2 -
Will the money be a problem at some point except maybe at the beginning (i know it is quite dependent to the mercs you choose so let say you have a fair mix of all kind 1/3 cheap 1/3 mid 1/3 top,you loose some mercs, do some militias and you know how to steal without doing it very often)
3 -
Scope attachment and long range weapon : until now i really like the combat but i stole a Calico M900 with a scope 7x recently. Gave it to Ira (who had less than 60 Mk at the time) and found that it was unbalancing the combat (enemies could do almost nothing). I never had more than Scope 2x before (already very powerful but ok). Elite with this kind of rifle with scope was the reason of so many of my restart before.I don't want the structure of combat latter becoming too much "sniper" and long range dependent(i don't mind sniper but not so powerful as i fear they may become). Should i decrease the power of scope ?
4 -
I have read different OCTH/NCTH topics.
I decided to stick to NTCH despite some flaws, more suitable to my playstyle.
But i understood i should modify the coolness stat of some weapons/items in the xml file that are made for OCTH.
I know how to do it technically but i do not how the coolness change strongly recommended.
So if someone have already done the job or can give me general advice about it...(i like much better being too careful about the change that a complete beta overhaul though).
5-
Marksman/Sniper trait : +10 CTH per aiming clik with rifle.
Considering you usually do at least 4 clicks with a rifle, does that mean a minimum of +40 CTH bonus (not counting the other fixed +5 CTH with rifle bonus) relative at someone without marksman ? Or the other mercs without this trait has something like +5 CTH bonus by aiming click and so the added bonus of the trait for 4 aim click is "only" 20 ?
Thanks, happy new year everyone and i hope the wall of text didn't mind anyone Smile

You sure you don't want to go a bit easier on yourself? Smile If I were you, I'd probably try to finish the game on Experienced at least once. Expert can be pretty lethal in the later stages, especially if you're going to avoid save-loading. Depending on your balance tweaks, of course.

Anyway, on to your questions:

1. Impossible to say, really. Depends on so many different factors and personal gameplay style. Can be anything from a few in-game months to hundreds of days. Obviously, the less you reload, the longer the campaign most likely lasts.

2. Probably not, unless you suffer major setbacks, for example lose a town (and a mine along with it) completely or get Tarballs killed on the first day of his two-week contract. Razz

3. I can't provide a good answer to this, mostly because I haven't played normal 1.13 (and with normal NCTH settings) for a long time. But I'd say it's pretty much up to personal preference. The focus will shift towards longer combat distances, that's a fact. You can adjust item stats whenever you want, so if you feel half-way through the game that they indeed are too powerful, you can tone down their effectiveness.

4. As far as I know, basically with NCTH you're supposed to use all the weapon classes simultaneously, i.e. weapons from every class should be available right from the start. But don't quote me on this.

5. Not sure about this one.

1) No way to tell this. What do you mean by "completing" the campaign? Kill Queen D. or take the whole country, train full militia everywhere and do all quests?
A wild guess would be ~100 days.

2) Money shouldn't be an issue. Stock v1.13 is quite easy in this aspect. Especially when you make use of the "sell stuff with alt+lmb"-feature.

3) In NCTH, scopes are the most important aspect when you're aiming a gun. It's quite obvious, that NCTH and/or the stats for most guns are NOT BALANCED in stock v1.13. You can play with NCTH and finish your game as usual but the system has its flaws.

4) Maybe you would do yourself a favor by not messing around with the game too much before you finishishing it at least once so you can get a better feel for it?

5) I'm not quite sure, bit I thing, the new trait system was dvleveloped with OCTH in mind and doesn't fully work woth NCTH??

Thanks for the quick answers, much appreciated Smile
i realize that it can seem weird to "mess" the ini and xml while i have not been very far in the game.
But in fact i have only make very few and careful modification (except for some balancing about mercs costs).
Also i already have played a lot, was able to win the DCA (once)without using cheesy tactic with only 2 save/load from the start of the campaign for example.
That's why i feel the need to make change now before going further because the first time you discover a game is the better IMHO. I don't want to discover mid game something too unbalanced for my taste (like the Calico M900 with a scope 7x so early) and restart the game because of it.
I'm surprise nobody is sure about point 5, it seems it could be such a monstrous bonus no matter if we play with NCTH or OCTH.

5) It is not as monstrous as it may look on the paper. It is not a flat CtH bonus, but percentual increase of the merc's total CtH gain from each aimclick. In other words, if your guy gets +10% CtH from an aimclick, this bonus gives +1% to that (10% from the base). If you use 6 aimclicks to get +60% CtH, you get 66% with Marksman trait. So this bonus is actually small one.
At least I hope I recall it correctly, it is quite some time since...

It makes sense 10% increase of the aim CTH gain, not total CTH.
The other way around was a bit scary.
