Using STI edit and following the instructions as given, I can replace the IMP portraits with ones of my own choosing, except for the large face (the 106X122 portrait in the "bigfaces" folder), which does not overwrite the original. (This also happens with faces downloaded from the 'Net) Is this portrait supposed to be a format different from 256 colors, is the size wrong, or what? It's pretty irritating.

The second question has to do with the mouth animations and eyeblinks. This is one feature of SirTech programs I could do without. In Wiz 8 it was possible to cheat these off by supplying blank portraits instead of mouths/eyes. Is there a way to disable these in JA2, or otherwise not have to fool with them?

Regarding #2: Can't you just copy the same pic a few times, and enter the entire pic as the mouth/eye region?

Regarding question #1, the problem was my Bigfaces folder had a gratuitous gap between Big and Faces.

Regarding question #2, yes, that works, but the problem now is finding the coordinates of the two smaller pix within the STI file. There is the 48X43 image, then there are 4 31X13 images and three 32X17 images. The former cover the eyes, the latter cover the mouth. The question would be what the coordinates are of these two subimages. I'll have to fool around awhile if no one can point me to the info.

Or, I could point myself to that info. It is here:

Ehm... can't you just open the pics with paint and count the pixels? I did sth like that on one of my portraits, and I think it went rather well.

If messing around with face elements and co-ordinates is proving a pain in the ass. I suggest using Jazz' Faces tool here...

http://kermi.pp.fi/JA_2/Modding_Tools/

Download the 'Faces_1.0.rar'

You will still need to position your eyes and mouth, but it's lot more easier with this tool. You can then grab the co-ordinates from it and put them into your code for them to act correctly in game.

The only shortcoming with this tool is if your desktop is running at a high resolution it is easy to miss correct placement by a pixel or two, but there's always ways around this. It's a shame this tool doesn't have a zoom function as that would solve the issue completely, and match the sort of resolutions JA2 traditionally runs at.
