It was my time of propaganda, you know, one catch line, without development, and you are right in many aspects. 
But !
2D is more simple to made (faster), more cheap, and can't be worse than a 3D work. You can reach a really good estheticism by this way, and without take any risk.
As you say, 3D, it's a lot of work (and time), so it's money too if you want a great job.
Personally, I prefer see the 3D work on the tactical map, the traditional portraits are enough.
Finally, my only message is : Better could be the enemy of Good.
