Make everything an option though and the options become akin to the 1.13 ini files. They still take me 2 days to setup fresh...

I'd much rather see the faces than a gasmask or something...
if there was ever a game about personalities this is it...

Ja2 style is perfect, with a better resolution, and please let us recognize them. I couldn't even touch JA bia because the characters portraits sucked big time...
I'll go with shanga on this one. Don't mess them!

IMO "to show or not to show" face gear on portraits heavily depends on GUI; there might be (inventory-)screens where showing face gear fits in and other icons or whatever were not.

just avoid the BiA disaster where showing face gear everywhere was a must to protect player's eyes from the ugliness and keyboard from vomit ... Wink

As for gear: personally I dont like the gear showing up on portraits. It all looks mashed up. However icons are fine. Remember that we have 3D game now, so equipment may be visible on characters themselves rather their portraits.

Yea, but when zoomed out it's hard to see if Ivan has night googles on or if the has sun shades. Optional is good, icons idea is also good as long as they're clear and self-explanatory. Icons could also serve as an additional button for quick unmounting of shades, for example...

Still, back to topic, I am dying to see a Jesper try his hand at a few versions of a merc face. This would explain better what he means by "close to JA2" or "more comic-book style".

Ya, I'd like to see a younger version of at least one male and one female of the mercs that will probably show up in the game. His choice of which ones.

I really wouldn't prefer more comic style either... I'd rather see same style, although more realistic like Ron's actor pics I like as well. You'll probably have seen them around. Most people here liked them a lot.

Modders will have quite an advantage as well with one of those styles to add "new" mercs...

Yeah! Ron's faces are awesome!

When something is good, you can't made really better.

What i would like for JA:F is:

- approximately similar style to JA2, but higher quality
- facestyles fitting to the time period ( 80

Well everyone has their preferences, personally I think the best Artist to come by in the last 12 years is Anv. Most of the others (including myself) haven't been able to capture that really interesting JA2 style.

3D can be done similar to JA2 though, however that would require a very skilled head modeller Very Happy

3D is atrocious

Correction: 3D CAN be atrocious, if done improperly and without much artistical skill and talent.
XCOM for instance succeeded quite well in modeling the 3D characters and their faces in quite a unique and visually appealing style. Same goes for the recent ANNO series titles in 3D, which also feature quite well made 3D heads for their characters.
But in order to make 3D heads and faces more distinguishable and unique, you have to go into a somewhat cartoonish direction with more strongly exaggerated features. And being able to properly display a good and believable emotional range also means that the facial animation has to be quite strong and elaborate, which means lots of work.

So with 3D faces it basically boils down to: do it properly or don

It was my time of propaganda, you know, one catch line, without development, and you are right in many aspects. Wink

But !

2D is more simple to made (faster), more cheap, and can't be worse than a 3D work. You can reach a really good estheticism by this way, and without take any risk.

As you say, 3D, it's a lot of work (and time), so it's money too if you want a great job.

Personally, I prefer see the 3D work on the tactical map, the traditional portraits are enough.

Finally, my only message is : Better could be the enemy of Good.
