anvBlast from the past...
Early JA2 screenshot.
Traits: Scouting(1.13), Meelee, Night ops
Disability: One-eyed (narrowed field of view, limited accuracy while throwing)
Attitude: Loner
Character: Phlegmatic
Voice: Calm and decisive. Weak Indian accent.
Personality/dialogue: Highly professional, doesn't like to waste his words. Occasionally refers to Native American culture in his quotes , but usually as a self-conscious joke. Loses his temper only when nagged about his eye or around Mike, whom he hates with passion.
Damn. I've been away for some time. I come back and I see this. Outstanding stuff, man. I can barely draw a straight line with a - fully operational (not that it matters, heh) - mouse and you're doing miracles with roughly the same tools  I'd love to see some of those in 1.13 at some point, even if they're voiceless. They're just too good to get buried and forgotten in this thread. Amazing work with Sioux.
Anyway, in the other thread lockie had a great idea. Since discussing it there doesn't seem appropriate, I'll just quote him here (which isn't the best place either, I guess. Oh, well):
lockieAnv , what JA needs is a Bruce Campbell ( Evil Dead actor ) face , he has so much dialogue available in films surely he'd be a great addition to any merc mod ?

...and wholeheartedly agree. JA needs Ash.
Possibly along with 'groovy', 'come get some', 'hail to the king, baby' and all that good stuff. Not to mention this character's probably one of the reasons JA is the way it is in the first place.

@Mauser: Yes, perhaps explosives and marksmanship should be a bit lower. I based them mostly on Army of Darkness where he pulled off some trick shots and produced dynamite and gun powder using instructions from chemistry book. I would say ~10 lower in both, maybe 20 in explosives. I don't really agree with mechanics though - with help of only medieval blacksmith he managed to construct fully operational prosthetic arm and turn wrecked car into spinning rolling blades of doom on wheels. That's requires some mechanical knowledge (not really pointed at in previous movies, but oh well)! As lockpicking and other finesse requiring stuff, his disability should take care of it, as most those things take dexterity in account in ther formulas. I made it its own disabilty instead of just setting dexterity to ~30, as that way seems more realistic.
What I had harder time with was wisdom. It's hard to say if he's a moron or a genius. On one hand he can mount a successful castle defense against entire, well, army of darkness, throws one liners around and learns skills fast - on the other, he does his share of ludicrously stupid things along the way.
Now, for the fact he's just a wimpy bad actor... Well, I kinda ignored that Taken in account, all of his skills should be considerably lower, especially experience level. Or he got so obsessed with method acting and Stanislavski's system, that he thinks of himself as Ash, and trained all of his skills in his image and likeness? Or he's completely insane, and he lists both imagined character name and skills on his MERC website instead of his own (yeah, cause Speck surely would verify those, ha!). Wait, actually I like that last one.
"Look, I just hired new merc, and his skills are pretty great!"
Ash arrives - "Hey, what the hell, his stats are like half lower than on the website?!"

lockie@Mauser - you do know Bruce Campbell is an actor and hasn't really lost an arm ?
The man Campbell has the looks to be a merc , the character Ash has only one arm , lets use the actor.... :headbanger:
You would be right Lockie, but remember: the guy basically constantly method acts his character - which is one handed! So even if he HAS two hands, his acting forces him to use only one, or break character.

Well, who exactly is he then? Is he the movie character with these actual skills, or only a rather mediocre actor just PLAYING a character who has these skills? Always remember: actors are people who pretend to be someone else than they really are, which know and can do things which they really do not - pretenders!

Well, actors are generally not necessarily the smartest or well educated people, but good at pretending to be. Somewhere above average would be adequate i

Cool. There's an expanded version of Ash saga:
Player just unlocked new MERC merc.
He has good all-around stats and he's a steal for this price. No reason to not hire him.
But then on the next plane a damn wimp arrives!
Guy's way overpriced now! False advertising much, MERC? Most would fire his sorry ass right away. But those who keep him around, even if just to listen to his quotes, notice that after he manages to reach 5 experience level/kill enough enemies/some other treshold, whatever, Ash quits.
Then after few days the new merc shows up on MERC website.
He's turned into quite good all-around merc, with skills still lower than his imagined overpowered version, but with better wisdom it's possible to train over the difference. He gains additional hunter trait. He's no longer arrogant showoff, he's just a showoff. He even no longer has one-handed disability - it's not like he has to prove anything to anyone anymore! His over-the-top personality gets toned down, but most badass quotes are preserved - but now are actually used, when situation deserves it, not desperetely all the time.
Mauser
Maybe you could even make him a character with a scripted twist, like Larry, where there is a turning point somewhere, where the challenged actor stops acting, gets his shit together and starts to turn into a true mercenary with merely a strong self ironic streak (and noticeably upped stats)? Like when he will take a leave after some time to get straightened out, but then returns without his artificial handicap, but a lust for combat and the will to do something truly useful with his life?
What I like most about his idea, is that it adresses one of problems with mercs in vanilla JA2 - they have no character development (in-game, in between doesn't count )! It's most noticeable with low level mercs, that stay with you through the entire campaign. You may turn Biff into level 9 killing machine who single handedly slays crepitus queen by punching her to death, but he'll still act like a sissy. Wonder if Flashback guys will somehow solve this, as a prequel is supposed to show how AIM mers as their younger less-experienced selves and their way to glory. You'd think by the end of the game they would be more similar to at least their JA/DG counterparts.
MauserQuite complex and hard to do probably, but definitely interesting.
Code-wise - surely possible, but it would had to be hardcoded, and I'm not sure many would like to download separate exe for a single (well, actually three) mercs. And every base revision would require updating of this exe too, to keep compatibility. Finding more quotes, fitting for a two somewhat different personalities would be difficult too.
MauserMaybe one will have to sift through all of Campbell
