Hey there, I finally signed up here. I'm still so happy, that this Kickstarter was successful. I'm not going to lie, there were times I doubt, we'd make it.

Thanks to everyone, even though now the real "work" begins: having good ideas for a great JA all day long and sending them in to Full Control. Wink

hang on... is this the real curan? Wink

if not, will the real curan please stand up?

will surely do Smile

Since we are also chit-chatting about remakes here (fitting, even if JA:F will be a reboot, not remake ^^).
Maybe someone is also interested in the remake of "Das Schwarze Auge: Sternenklinge" aka Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny.

it seems to be a 1:1 remake with newer graphics and a bit updated UI.. which is quite fine for me, to be honest, since the graphics ARE really outdated.. if i can replay the game in nicely done graphics, that

Posted it at the KS page, but I may as well post it here too: Planet's Edge

One of the best squad RPGs I've ever played, it even ended on a cliffhanger (hinting a sequel) and I think I was like 15 at the time and I wrote an actual letter (yes a letter!) to New World Computing to ask if they were going to make it and sadly I got a very nice reply but the answer was no Sad

What about making the base game , sort of a vanilla 1.13 , no sci-fi mode , no zombie mode , no factions mode or even an urban city mode , and add these and new quests as and when they are ready and able to be bolted on ?
Start with maybe an even 10 quests and an end target , which can be added to with more maps , skills , items and quests as an inducement to keep us buying from you ?

If it turns out as we hope , you know we'll keep buying and modding Smile

It is, though I probably only be able to "prove" it by verifying it through a post on Kickstarter, which I'm to lazy to do at the moment. *g*

A story set in the late 80's means no picatinny rails, right? So this means less gun porn. I still cry in bed for no p90. Pic related.

Fear nought my friend! Although Mil Std 1913 dates from early 1995, the functionally identical Weaver Rail was already around in the 1980s.

Actually I don't fear we're going to have too few guns, if human history isn't lacking one thing, its weapons. And if something misses, I'm sure the old guard of modders and some new ones (maybe some 3D artists?) will be able to offer them, for the "extended universe".

These are really some wonderful weeks! JA:F was funded, today the quarter finals of WCS Europe where played out, and my next vacation isn't that far off either.

Oh sure, if it all comes together the way we are aiming at, there will be no question about having a kitchensink mod a few weeks down the road that includes everything from the venerable Mauser 1898 to the GD LWMMG, anachronism be damned ... after all, when is JA2 supposed to play?
But having a rail system available that is accurate for the time is a help when it comes to getting them to implement a proper rail system Smile

Ok, that is a good argument. Wink

I was really wondering whether we should ask FC to promise to release the source code of JA:F after a few years. The source code release for JA2 certainly helped a lot with e.g. JA2 Stracciatella. The most awesome move would be a true release of the source code under, say, a version of the GPL. But I'd be more than happy with a release like JA2 got.

I doubt this being part of the licence deal with bC (At least if FC used something that will still be owned by bC) ...

Anyway, let them actually do the code first ... Wink

Full Control. The council is... pleased... to hear that you managed to rise the founds for this project. However, we are aware this is only the beginning of your work.

We will be watching.

Yes, I know. I basically just did. Very Happy

More serious though: I really think it could help JA:F in the long run too. If they "just" release the code and not the art assets, you'd still have to buy the game to play it. But I fear it won't happen for a couple of reasons:

  • licensing issues with bitComposer (I sure can see bC being as "crafty" as MS who basically screwed over any non-backer of Shadowrun Returns by burying a forced DRM clause somewhere in the licensing deal)
  • the game is going to be based on a third-party engine, which means, they can only release their code anyway, which would require the community to build their own or find a suitable open-source engine as a replacement. In any case, it'd mean a lot of porting effort.
  • FC clearly stated during their campaign, that they build their games by expanding on previous work (IIRC the term they used was "growing"). This makes it unlikely, they'd be inclined, to release it (by their own account, they've already poured a lot of money into the creation of the current code base).

Still, I think, the topic should be breached in due time (certainly not the biggest priority up front).

You know I was talking about a less public place and time.
And whoever thinks about including the assets in the deal is being unreal anyways, not even JA2 includes those or "0)Install JA2" wouldn't be part of every instructions. Also, check Unity before you talk about engine ports.

About the source-code question: That's an interesting one. We cannot promise anything here. Not so much because of bC. We own the code in the end. Maybe we'd have to cut out some assets they own (remember: We are allowed to use everything ever produced for the Jagged brand. Of course, everything has to be reworked... meh, different topic). But it'd still be our code. However. It's not completely our code. We use different addons for Unity where we have the license to use but not to release them unencrypted. Nothing set of course. But it'd be tricky.

Same issues we had when SFI approached MOD Squad to publish "JA2 Urban Chaos" as a stand-alone sequel for JA2. True, we had a core team who did 80% of the work themselves, but 20% of the game was community contributions from all over the world. Hundreds of people chipped in small bits. Trying to separate those from the main game would've been such a pain that we preferred to let the offer pass... so the world got a free JA2UC and a Wildfire as an official sequel...

Ah, but as I recall, you do have access to the previous games' source code as well. Any chance we can get our hands on those? JA1 had an interesting "shoot your fellow merc" code for example, for mercs that can't stand each other, and JA:DG had a network framework in place. Even though I doubt we can get our dirty paws on them, could you ask if you're allowed to give us access?

Ha! I remember being able to shoot your fellow mercs and get a small battle going between them. I also remember you could give them a good goosing too. For shits and giggles I would do that to them. It was fun. Sir-Tech new how to use good humor in their game.

Congratulations to the team on getting full funding for JA:F, great job! Smile

Finally, we will get the true sequel to JA2; well, technically a prequel, but that's ok, too. Smile Besides, after JA:F comes out (and maybe an expansion pack or two), then they can get to work on JA3, which can pick up the story from right after JA2. Hopefully with input from the JA3 team on what story ideas they were working on, so that game can finally get made, plus good ideas from the FC team and the fans, of course. Smile

Well, as for my taste, if they manage to make JA:F as good as we all want it to be, before getting started with JA3, i think we deserve a proper remake of JA1+DG and JA2 on the new engine! But maybe that

I also would not be too optimistic, since i think it JA:F and JA 1 will have quite different engines/gameplay etc. after all.

Why do you think that? The Unity engine of JA:F is quite universal and would lend intself perfectly to recreate both JA1 and JA2 on it.
Also, all three games share a quite similar gameplay and basic game mechanics, with freely roamable sectors and of course the TBC.
JA:F will also have base building, which could be easily transferred to the JA1 scenario, where the player also has a base of operations.
And giving the player an expandable base in Omerta or Drassen, maybe with the option to install a forward base in some of the other cities, should not prove too much of a problem, once the basic code for it has been implemented in JA:F and been made moddable through scripting.

Once JA:F has set the basics properly, then it is all only a question of expanding on them and creating the content for the Unity engine.
Turning JA:F into JA1 would then only require these new scenario assets as well as some modifications to the game code, depending on how flexible FC will design the JA:F specific code and features.

And only because some gameplay elements differ between JA:F, JA1 & JA2 doesn

The ACA Buildings fit the description for forward bases. They just need a bit of upgrading.

Mauser: I agree, once they have the framework for JA:F finished, it will be easy for them to create new JA games, expansion packs, add more features, etc. It will be very efficient once they have built a solid foundation to work from. This means remakes of JA1, JA2, a new JA3 and so on can be made fairly quickly without a lot of extra overhead. Plus, I think once the FC team shows they can make a great JA game, which I have no doubt they will Smile , they will have no trouble raising all the cash they need from any future kickstarters for their next JA games, so the games will just get bigger and better as they go. Smile

If we can get that map generator stretch goal it should be fairly easy to do with good core mechanics. Smile

Having the ability to mod enough (new maps, campaigns, characters, items) is the main starting point. Also if there is a modular scripting system in place then even AI edits and additional item/gameplay functionality could be possible.

My team is working with Unity too at the moment and it has some issues, but with some of the games out there modding was able to be allowed. However core source is a tough one to get and certainly not releasable (well the Unity core that is).

I'm with Exxos. I think remakes of JA1 & 2 would be best handled by the community. We can LOVE them into the ground! Smile

I think a professional games company like FC would be better utilised making entirely new games to widen the JA story and appeal.

Just launched, Expeditions: Conquistador is a TB tactical/strategic RPG made with the Unity engine. Sound familiar? This is one of the first Kickstarter projects to launch, and it looks pretty good.

http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php/topics/321371/Re_Turn_based_tactics_RPG_Expe.html#Post321371

Since the developers are from copenhagen as well, it would be interesting to know if FC are familiar with this project, and if the know the guys behind it

Maybe so. But i think, we still deserve some lifesigns, the FC forum is pretty silent too.

If FC strives for proper PR, then they should give the fanbase a weekly update at least. And if they are facing crunchtime and deadlines, they should probably announce that also, so people know why they are so silent.

It is just no good to fall silent for weeks, right after you reached the KS funding goal. Makes people suspicious. :bluesuspect:

Do we have anyone from the modders here in close contact with the devs at FC who can maybe give us some info on what
