I just had a thought I'm slightly wondering about with Flashback, it's about how the game might display the type of ammo in your gun.
Would it be like JA2 where the ammo number is colored (i.e. White for ordinary pistol rounds and deer slugs, red for armor-piercers, blue for hollowpoints) or a different system? Perhaps something like showing an icon next to the number for different ammo types (maybe nothing for ordinary pistol rounds, a broken shield for armor-piercing, perhaps a bomb for explosive ammo and a flame for incendiary rounds if you had those. Examples aren't solid, they're just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about).

That's an interesting question. While most veterans will instantly recognize the RGB coding, it was rather arbitrarily chosen and will mean next to nothing to newcomers since the fashion currently runs to the symbols you mentioned.

Hmmmm, yeah, good points!
I fine with the colors, but I think you're right about them being arbitrary, particularly with rifles having no "default" (white) ammo and how the shotgun ammo is colored (Buckshot and slugs are set up as counterparts to Hollowpoints and Armor-piercers, but are colored yellow and white instead).
Perhaps this would be best as an option? Not particularly overwhelming to choose and it would work so that people could use what suits them best.

surely when the ammo is not in the gun then there'll be room on the inventory display for HP or AP to be visible. And just like you can click on a gun in inventory and it opens up a display where you can read about the gun or else slap on accessories, similarly clicking on that magazine in your inventory that mysteriously states 9mm HP in blue will open up some sort of information on it.

I do hope that shotgun ammo is designed to match the color. For buckshot, have the name be in blue, but for the picture of the shells have the entire shell body (the hull) be blue. For regular shotgun rounds a grey hull. For AP red.

Note that done properly done shotgun ammo wouldn't exactly follow the tenets of regular vs HP vs AP. Generally HP does more damage but punches through armor less effectively, and AP is the opposite.

For shotguns regular ammo is regular ammo. Buckshot increases damage AND increases range slightly...and has no special armor rules. Slugs do the same damage as regular ammo but increase range moderately (and no spread effec.) Fletchette would be AP ammo and do regular damage. (No matter how great Fletchets sound, they tend to not act as effectively as buckshot on non-armored targets).

Side note, in case you are wondering all that 'specialty' stuff like shotgun shells loaded with a short chain, razor blades, hooks, etc etc NEVER works as well as buckshot.

I don't have a reply to a lot of that, but I'll respond to the bits I do have a reply to.

I know, I was PURELY talking about the little colored number displayed when it's loaded.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that. The stripes work fine and IRL red was for Buckshot and blue was for Deer Slugs (apparently, I don't know and it's also allegedly stopped being that way). And what exactly do you mean "regular shotgun rounds"? Wouldn't that be either Buckshot or Deer Slugs?
