I would like to request a feature of Surprise Attack.

In JA2 you walk in enemy sector and suddenly game goes into turn based mode, you wait but nothing happens and you return to real time. The problem is that the turn mode switch is huge spoilers for a player that now knows that he has been spotted, by the enemy. IMHO the game should go into turn mode only when:

*merc (or militia) spots an enemy
*enemy attacks merc in any fashion (even if enemy himself is not spotted)
*on player prompt maybe?

Silent storm had a good system that allowed real time sneaking as well allowed enemies to sneak up on you.

It would also be cool if you could catch (or be cached) the enemy flat footed. In such case the surprised character has only half the AP in first turn.

BTW: 100 AP system is the way to go. It will make things easier for weapon balancing.

This has pros and cons. Wargaming didn't manage to get the spotting system right in 3 years and people still moan about invisible shells in WoT.

Consider this scenario where the enemy has a sniper well camouflaged. He could take down your squad without you ever spotting him.

Well the game would go into forced turn mode at the first shot he fires, so its not like you couldnt do anything, like throwing a smoke grenade or getting into the cover. Oh, and why the hell you would move whole squad in the open, in front of cover, and with sniper around?

Its only chance for ambush in strategic map mode. Im talking about tactical battles.

I'd suggest that if the player is spotted first and in range, the player gets interrupted as soon as the game switches to turn based, regardless of mercs' experience. So enemies in range would have an opportunity to shoot first.

In late game areas with tanks and foes carrying mortars, that could be rather thrilling ... Mad

In addition if the player is spotted first but not in range, the game stays real time.

I would see surprise attack as something in the strategic map and in certain sectors. For instance, a mountains road or a road between thick forest. You and the enemy have option to choose to let the enemy enter the sector and engage them so they opponent in the middle of the sector surrounded (exactly as with bloodcat encounters in JA2). You can set up the ambush position and hide your mercs around it. But there should be the possibility of the ambush failing for you and the enemy also (you have intel about it or you have a merc with a trait to scout or spot an ambush).

But in the long run I see this type of action as a add-on rather than a must have. There much more important game mechanics in my opinion.
