San Mona boxing fights, making $20-30k per day - bug? exploit? or as intended?[message #323590] Sat, 03 August 2013 15:54 Go to next message

My thanks to all the v1.13 modders. I've only discovered this game this year and am loving it, v1.13 is just all kinds of awesome.

I've noticed some peculiar events with San Mona boxing. Firstly, sometimes I get only one fight before kingpin is impressed. Sometimes it takes three fights. I'm not sure if there's some randomness intentionally built into the game/mod here or if I should be getting three fights every time?

Also, and perhaps more importantly, in my current game I can fight every 1-2 hours (when Darren is available). So thats about 4-6 fights a day from 3pm to bar close, approximately $20-30k per day. I fight at D5 then move to C5 (where porn store is) and wait returning every hour to Darren. And it's always the same tired old fighter I'm facing every hour or so who starts off in 'Poor' condition. (As a rule I don't kill the fighters, just knock them out, when they're poor/critical I go for the legs).

Sometimes after 1 hour Darren says 'I have a club to run' but next hour he'll give me a fight. While testing (playing forward and only doing the boxing) he even said 'I have a club to run' but then offered me a fight straight after when I talked to him again.

My IMP has 80 Leadership, is that why?

I haven't tested on another play-through yet because didn't want to lose my progress.

Is this as intended or not? I'm not keen on exploiting a flaw in the game so I want to know whether I can legitimately make a $20-30k per day prize fighter part of my game? In contrast to the other financial mechanics of the game this seems like a lot of money to be making so I'm assuming this isn't as intended?

EDIT: game version: JA2 v1.13 build 4870 no other mods

This sounds like some sort of bug. While the number of fights always varies, and its possible to fight every day, one shouldn't get multiple 'fight series' per day. Normally Darren will say something about his fighters needing rest...

Just started a new game to test this, ran straight to san mona. Got 3 fights to start with this time, came back an hour later and spike said it was past closing time, at 16:41pm? Came back an hour after that, Spike let me in and Darren was offering me another fight already. I'll try a clean install and see if that changes anything.

I seem to remember something like that from vanilla but that's never happened to me in v1.13. I've now done a fresh install and tested by going straight for san mona on first day (skipping out on first battle and dodging patrols). Went in with IMP, DrQ (MA for fighting), Raven (scouting).

Won first 3 fights, Kingpin impressed and leaves, then slept right there in the bar for one hour (from about 5pm-6pm on Day1), spoke to Darren and he was already offering another fight.

As you say, surely this can't be right?

If normal behaviour is one fight per day maximum then I might just restrict myself to that. Can anyone replicate this in their v1.13 build 4870 so I know if my install is goofy or if it's something common.

Maybe the quest is not updated correctly until having talked to Kingpin afterwards?
If you go and talk with him, does Darren still offer another fight the next hour?

Seems not to be common, never happened to me AFAIR.

Thanks Sam,

Just tested after talking to kingpin, result is the same.

Here's a save just before the 3rd fight, you can fight the third fight, sleep for 1 hour and fight again. After that you can fight every few hours. Darren never says anything about his fighters needing rest. Also if you kill the fighter on your 4th fight, after that Darren will offer you the fight and take your money but it jumping into the ring does nothing. Talking to Darren again only gives the chance to give him more money. Talking to Kingpin makes no difference.

If this issue is particular to me it seems I've done something wrong somewhere so I'm currently re-downloading everything to see if that makes a difference. I have already tried a reinstall.

I've done some more testing to confirm results. Did a full fresh download and reinstall. Tested v1.12 and v1.13 build 4870+patch.

v1.12 did a test on a play through to day 10 attempting to fight every few hours. v1.12 has some bugs such as Darren offering fight but after paying him and bell ringing nothing happens when you jump in the ring. Generally speaking however you're looking at the same 3 fights (provided you've not killed any fighters) every 1-2 days. I'm not sure if it's random if Darren says his fighters are resting or if it relates to how badly you beat them up.

v1.13 suffers from the same bugs as v1.12 it seems but additionally you have the issue described above. Sometimes you only get one fight in first round before Kingpin says he's impressed, sometimes three (I've not seen this in my v1.12 games but haven't tested extensively). Main issue is that after first bout of 1 or 3 fights you can advance time and fight a single fight every 1-2 hours as per attached save above. It's always only one fight with the same easy first fighter even if he's in poor condition. I confirmed it was just the one fight every 1-2 hours in many tests and by running game forward several days to ensure everyone was at max health.

I'm on Win7 Ultimate x64 and have tested both with win98 compat on and off.

My testing suggests the issue would be common and not something particular to me.

I've noticed another variation on this issue.

If you fight the first round only on your first visit to boxing and wait an hour then you'll have the full 3 fights available again.

[...] and its possible to fight every day[...]

That alone sounds like an exploit - 15k/day sounds like a lot. I didn't evn knew it was intended in 1.12 Anyway, it would be nice to settle the bugs with san mona boxing once and for all. All the info should be in some lua file, right?

Nice try, all the info is spread across a dozen or so different .cpp's

It came to my attention after I started looking at the lua files Sad. I'm neiggher a coder or lua editor, but editing luas sounds less scary than messing with JA2 code.
