@pheloncab: I agree. we have already too many definition for special forces (SAS, SOG)

maybe:
Soldier -> generic soldier
Special Force -> special force unit (for scope, spooky and shadow)

Those special forces backgrounds are actually pretty diversified and have different themes: SAS is airborne/paratrooper, SOG is jungle warfare, GSG9 is urban warfare, Ranger is mobility on land and that Seals proposition is water/fast deployment (though description is too long. Wasn't there a diving feature and fins planned/added in 1.13? Could add some bonus to that.) As such, they actually motivate to use mercs with them in different scenarios and add some flavour, so I would keep them in. Common soldier could be e.g. "grunt" (suppresion resistance, carry strength?) - for a more direct approach - would fit Grizzly.

Brenda - "misfit"? Together with Numb - they both seem to have winning personalities (lower approaches?)

Oh, and Kyle should be "FABULOUS"! Very Happy

I realize that the backgrounds of special forces units is a little bit of a lot, plus a lot of some specialty, I'm just wondering if you add all those different types, plus all the civillian backgrounds, how much work you'll be adding to all the modders to adjust the balance on all those in addition to all they already do for us.

Modders are mad for this kind of stuff. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of them make 100 different backgrounds for 100 different mercs.

I've beem wondering about the RPC_BONUS_TO_MILITIA_TRAINING_RATE value now when the backgrounds are added. Is it only for rebels or for every RPC out there? If it applies only for a rebel, then wouldn't it be better if that would be applied to their backgorund? Unless the Rebel backgrounds isn't used only with the Arulcan rebels

Looks like i'll have to start another game. Again.
Thanks alot Flugente Very Happy

my suggestions:
  • Hitman, Assasin should be merged into one, or into a "Hitman - "distinctive_feature"", e.g Hitman - Poisons, Hitman - stealth etc.
  • Prisoner, convict merged into one or changed into "Prisoner -"prison_name/area_here""
  • Firefighters - add some smoke, tear, "kill-gas" resistance
  • Children, teenagers - add healing speed bonus
  • If homosexuals makes it in, then please one for each gender.

This link proves once again how deep goes this game. I still wonder why this game went south? The passion they put into this one, made it a irreplaceable master piece.

You can add whatever background you want to your game. Just edit Tabledata\Backgrounds.xml.

Personally I don't see the need for several backgrounds for Force x of Country y in the stock 1.13 GameDir. There already are several military backgrounds in there.

Flugente, your work amazes me. Thank you!
I fell in love with the individual backgrounds and was totaly shocked when all backgrounds (!) ingame went "unknown" after I edited merc stats with the XML MERC PROFILE EDITOR.
Just reinstalled the game and got the same result. It's the Revision 6438 / 1789.

Maybe someone got a workaround, thank you.

Welcome to the pit, evil!

Most likely, the profile editor has not yet been adopted to deal with the backgrounds, hence messing some xml tags up or such.

If you refer to "proedit" - this for vanilla and all version that do not use the XML externalisations ...
So, no, this is not for '1.13 4870+'.

At least one.

For those that are not aware, Jazz is a creator for both of them, so if the HDD failure was the reason, now he is making a new one, this time with a source code available on the web. It is also included in the SVN (recently moved away from the gamedir SVN to the code SVN as per this thread).

I was thinking of it too, it's just a few bytes though and currently some obscure values are not externalized to the XMLs (like nationality, see discussion here). If you feel to suggest deleting/moving the files away, feel free to comment in here Smile

Hi, Flugente:

I'm translating some .xml files into Chinese, and I just found out that there are several .xml files that do not have their respective Chinese.xml files including this one.

Sorry I know almost nothing about C++ or .xml codes (still working on that though : ) ), I just want to ask if it is Ok for us to simply make a patch and replace the English version of background.xml or you are just working on adding the Chinese.xxx.xml and we could hope for the future updates?

Could any one please explain me what does tag means.
In description it states that it increases running speed. But what does that means in geme terms?
I used SAS background (+ 10 to speed) and calculated the AP costs for running (not walking) from one point to another. They were the same.
I even made a background with value 50 (from - 50 to 50 values are available) and values area still the same.
Also I tried to tvaluate running speed out of combat, but my female IMP without speed was running actually faster then my male IMP with +50 speed.

I also tried to do the same with "Scope" and other mercs eve though she has SAS background, the AP price for running is the same.

I'm guessing here, but i presume that it only increases running outside of turn based action. It doesn't increase AP.

Off_Topic is correct. It influences how fast a merc is. It does not have any influence on AP.

And it was used the wrong way around (+10% made you 10% slower instead of faster) Sad , which is fixed in r6526. + is good, - is bad.

Hello everyone,
Just a very short question:

In the I.M.P. background page, when choosing merc's background, there are two icons name "Prev" and "Next" which I didn't or couldn't find respective text in the language source file. Could anyone tell me where to find them? (or maybe not externalized yet?)

Well, some of our Chinese players are really pissed off by English related tests and've developed deep hatred for Latin words, just for crying out loud.

Greetings.

This problem has already been fixed, thanks.

Nope. Might happen in some cases, but mostly not (this was already the case before this feature was introduced - effective stat values can be outside of [0, 100]).

I used a zombie background (with a variation of Galileo quote in the description lol) on a character with low need to sleep and night ops. Nothing coded, just changed xml file.
The background is -2 need for sleep, -100% food and water.
As I expected you can't have a character that never sleep (maybe there is robot but isn't tied on need of sleep value) but this character NEVER eat and drink! Despite when I click on the background I read -50% food and water it is possible to set -100%

By the way when I did the ingame comparation with mercs without that background the other starved merc after being removed was still alive and hirable after a while, but when hired again he was starving a second after being lift from the helicopter.
