This is an artistic representation Jesper from FC made of one of the first sectors in JAF, a gas station. Does it feel ok for you? Cramped, just enough in size? Discuss.

Apparently there are 64x64 tiles. Not sure how this compares to JA2 tileset though. Guess your best shot is to visually compare stuff on map (that's what I did) with stuff that goes into a JA2 map.

This particular sector seems a bit cramped, but notice the corners are all cut off (by sea, black sig or cliff). If it was a full land sector it would be pretty decent in size. But nowhere BigMaps size.

It looks smaller, but it's hard to establish a scale.

Edit: 64 on the same ~sq m visual scale? That's ... not much. 40% linear and a mere 16% area.

Taking BIA as a reference , the maps there seem smaller than JA2 , so perhaps similar to this new screen ?

This sketch is way too rough to get a proper impression of scale.

But i sincerely hope that BIA will have somewhat dynamically sized maps, which will be bigger in scale than classic JA2, so it can render long range engagements as well as extensive compounds like airports or harbors properly.

Oh I agree with that!!! ^^

Would love to have a sniper team somewhere in back or at the end of the runway as the assault team plays spotter.
It was the same in 1.13 just the feeling of a shot hitting from the otherside of the map... :rifle: ROFL

judging by the video, the sector seems tiny, definitely smaller than some BiA sectors. BiA had some sectors that were quite big (towns) and some that were small (outposts etc). the Khaanpaa expansion had even bigger sectors.

dethica, yes that's true, it's a 64x64 grid compared to 168x168 normal maps of ja2 and there should be luxuriant vegetation, lots and lots of trees, it's a tropical island not a f.. desert. I really hope for better graphics than in ja:bia ... cause that sucks!

I am not expecting something like bigmaps... although I personally like it a lot, its too much for most players.

But 64x64? Like depressives brot said:

And I think its quite safe to assume that one tile is roughly the same as in ja2 or any other comparable game, anything else wouldn't make too much sense...

Unless its designed for early-game pistol fights, or a non-combat encounter, I find this very worrying.

edit: in the comments to the timelapse, full control say its 100x100

Well, they may say whatever they want, but we are patience players and unfortunately for them we know how to count so here it goes: If they start lieing then F... them!

and even it it were 100x100 it would be still a quater of we we are used to have...

After a heated debate with the devs they thought it over and made the timelapse map on 100x100. I agree that even that is pretty small. But all depends on effective gun range. I guess we can have a say during alpha when we'll get to actually fight on the map.

Well, considering that this is the first experimental map mockup, a smaller size should not be that much of a problem. Unless, this rather small size would then become the standard for the whole game.

I am still strongly in favor of dynamically sized maps, instead of uniformly sized ones.
This way, we can have tight, focused maps for close encounters and wide maps for extensive compounds and long range engagements.

Technically this should pose no big problem for the engine and neither for the systems running it on, since memory and GPU power even on older lower end systems should be sufficient to render it.

Unless FC actually wants to optimize the game for tablets and netbooks too, which would impose much more severe resource restrictions. But i somehow hope they won't do that or find a way to make it work regardless.

100x100 is a decent size for a smaller map for testing purposes. Let's just start from there and work it out.

Size is about the same as a Ja2 map as far as I can see, enough to ilustrate an idea. The representation looks fine for me. Now, if the textures and colors are about in this quality

http://s8.postimg.org/bwz4yz879/Untitled_1.jpg
how to screen capture we got ourselves a winner.

Frankly I'm rather concerned with the kind of textures and colors they use in order to give us on idea about the artwork (dioramas, the video linked above) but I still hope for the best.

That's from a Facebook game, an RTS called Stormfall.

JAF pre-alpha Xmas sneak peak...is an abomination.
I'll just go puke somewhere. This is why I never gave any money to these guys, they suck bigtime.

Woot? What is from Stormfall? The images I see on Stormfall's Facebook look nothing like the sneak peak from JA2. Could you link the Stormfall image?

Personally I'd rather they waited till there was an actual game screeny before posting images . Along with the piccy posted today , nice drawing though it is , it may bear no resemblance to the finished article at all !

Mebbe I'm just a grumpy old Hector . Very Happy

@JMich, yes the Stormfall Age of War game has nothing to do with the Jagged Alliance world, image was taken just as an example of good texture and color, but it is from there. http://img.xrmb2.net/804327.jpg

@lockie Yes, they keep telling that and you bought it from them. If their "artists" had any shadow of passion for this game or a little bit of personality they wouldn't have come up with that crap for us to see.

Well their artists already named Ja2 a "silly game that takes itself very seriously" (watch their latest video), so what do you expect from them?

The finished product shouldn't look like this at all.. the first annoying thing i've noticed was the camera perspective which should be changed!

They had a huge problem with color saturation in ther alpha x-mas preview, but with some tweaks that sector map can look ok.
