Hi.
I just wanted to ask what is the benefit of putting 10x scope on a sniper rifle?
So far (approx 50% progress) the best scope for me is ACOG 4x or PSO-1
With NCTH it gives very small reticle and my sniper misses very rare.
BUT if I try to use 10x scope - the reticle is way bigger for the targets I see. I never get maximum magnification (maybe in very rare cases).
So in 99% of cases 4x scope is better for me then 10x scope.
The same with 7x scope, but it is not so bad as with 10x.
Am I using my sniper wrong?

This depends on the map. On WF maps for example there are lots of obstacles and combat takes place at closer ranges. 10x scopes are useless because of the high penalty that is applied for using them below designated range.

With the stock 1.13 parameter SCOPE_RANGE_MULTIPLIER = 1.0 the minimum scope ranges are (when used with default NORMAL_SHOOTING_DISTANCE = 70):
2x scope:   14 tiles
4x scope:   28 tiles
7x scope:   49 tiles
8x scope:   56 tiles
10x scope:  70 tiles

On WF maps long range combat is done between 30 to 40 tiles so a 4x scope is best.

I highly recommend setting SCOPE_RANGE_MULTIPLIER to 0.7. This should be the default anyway and the description of the parameter even says so. With 0.7 you get much more useful minimum ranges:
2x scope:   9,8 tiles
4x scope:   19,6 tiles
7x scope:   34,3 tiles
8x scope:   39,2 tiles
10x scope:  49 tiles

With 0.7 which works great for me I use the 4x scopes for my ARs and 7x or 8x for sniper rifles. If you feel that the penalty is still too high you can change AIM_TOO_CLOSE_SCOPE = -4.0 to something higher (-2.0 for example which will halve the penalty).

However, on large maps which provide a better line of sight the current default of 1.0 could be useful. But as I understood our Zombiehunter he will make excessive use of high grass on the large maps so expect to have limited view range. Wink

How about OCTH? Does high magnification scopes still worse?

Thanks for very detailed answer.
BTW in CTHConstants in the comment is written that default is 0.7, but in reality it is set to 1.0

In OCTH it depends on setting about dynamic aim clicks, IMO. If enabled, only high power scopes allow for more aim clicks resulting in better CTH (for the old headshot game).

Thanks for the clarification. It's been a long time i played with OCTH... or JA2 in anyway, i just update from SVN, read changelogs, check xml but no actual game play.
