Hi all!

If you're like me and enjoy a bit of variation in your games, then this just might be the thing for you. It's basically a new option for the current "random merc" feature, and it extends the current randomness beyond experience level and attributes. Traits and even AIM gear kits are fully randomized.

I've implemented my own logic to handle this, as mercs are assigned roles, invisible to the player, and only used for merc generation to help determine the path traits and gear will follow.

As far as I can tell it's bug free (touch on wood). I'm basically throwing it out there in case someone wants to toy with it or add it to the main build. I'm not sure how much demand there is for something like this, but there you go.

I have trouble with compile a new exe with that feature.Cannot start a new game far beyond starting screen interface.Do i made something wrong?

A fresh gamedir,builded exe with VS2008 and cannot launch game far game starting screen.

Yup.Something weird going after this patch.All other exe what i build for myself worked fine,this new pathc broked something or my Vs2008 has troubles?

If In ja2_option ini i set Random stats=4 game is broken,if other settings-game works

Sounds quite interesting. :thumbsup:

How do I have to picture these "roles": On creation, merc X is chosen to become e.g. SAW guy, thus getting auto weapons trait an fitting gear kit(s) with full auto gun and such?

I can confirm this. There is a problem with MERCS_RANDOM_STATS = 4.

It decides randomly what role the merc should fill, like leader or sniper. It'll then encourage your stat points, traits and gear to go in that general direction. Higher level mercs tend to have multiple roles. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to make the decisions look meaningful, rather than just a bland mix of random numbers.

Omg.Now it is a really Total Random.Top Mercs in AIm became a lowest and vise versa.One thing:Almost all mercs(Top mercs have 9-7 level exp Marksmanhip,agility dex at 100 or 90,non top almost all have 100 marksmanship and almost 100 agility),some gear kits have no ammo at all but have weapons.It is really crazy but i think stats must be lowered.


More glitches:merc with Traits have lower skill(example Engineer have 25 mechanics)and he can have in kits Toolkit or something like that,but he haven't(90% restarts of game such thing occur).Some kits have few weapons,but no ammo.Some kits have useless junk in inventory(merc without spy trait have clothes for spy,merc without radio operator have operator set and so on).

Which version of Aimnas you used for this?

I think it will be very good if such feature will be more customisable:Like random kits,but vanilla stats,traits of mercs.

Spy and Radio Operator traits are never supposed to be assigned, if they are it's a bug. As for skills and kits related to gear: it's completely random. The higher your stat and skill the more likely you are to receive a kit, but it's still random.

The lack of ammo is probably related to the fact that I used AIMNAS to create the kits, which means when the same algorithms are applied to vanilla 1.13, the selection is cut down to a fraction and it has trouble coming up with alternatives. Same goes for the random spy/radio operator stuff.

I use the AIMNAS Xmas release. I will probably continue to tweak and balance the stats as needed. I installed a vanilla 1.13 version just tonight for that very reason.

maybe you cut a little a stats too?Because 70% percent of mercs have 100 in 1-4 stats and some times 1-2 stats at 100 points.Even IMP,RPC chars have random gear.IMP mercs have a little overflow with items.

I wonder if there's a way to combine this with modifications to allow dead mercs to be rerecruited and tweaks to stat growth and recruitment cost, so you could have a full X-Com experience, throwing dozens of useless rookies into the meatgrinder, with the survivors emerging as badass commandos. It would be an interesting change of pace, from leading a squad of hypercompetent, insanely well equipped squad of commandos against a poorly trained conscript army, to leading a ragtag group of disposable, outgunned and inexperienced rebel soldiers who eventually become seasoned veterans on par with the best of the mercs.
