I would like to be able to play a quick pick up game, for fun and testing strategies and modifications.

I know it isn't trivial, few things are. However, it leverages as much existing code as possible. There is the addition of one GUI screen. Once everything is selected and the battle is started it plays out just like a regular tactical battle.

It would start by clicking "Skirmish," a new option on the main menu under "New Game."
I then see a primitive GUI screen with limited options where I can:

1. Select a group of mercs from an existing savegame via file chooser.
2. Pick a map, by grid coordinate (or just generic city, swamp, forest, etc.)
3. Select day/night, clear/rain and entry direction N/E/W/S through radio buttons.
4. Choose the number of army and militia, the proportion of Admins/Elite/Regular/Veterans using direct entry dialog boxes.
5. Allow or deny classes of weapons with YES/NO check boxes. One could make a knife only game, or disallow pistols and grenades, etc. The categories might be melee, sniper rifles, explosives, grenades, and so forth.
5. Hit GO

This will then take me to the tactical map where I place mercs along an edge as usual when assaulting a sector and then fight the enemies I determined earlier. The strategic screen would not be available. There will be an option given to abort when that button is clicked.

Saving the game isn't even necessary, if it is any trouble to implement. After the battle the player is returned to the home screen.

As I type it it sounds quite ambitious. However I've seen complex additions added to this game and what looks like it should simple turn out to be a real bear to code.

Thank you for your time.

I like the idea, how about something like this..

you can randomly generate or predefine settings concerning maps, mercs, loadouts, weapon classes or coolness, time, weather, enemies, militia support and map entrance side.
Maybe the random part could be a random seed so people can share that number and see if they can play the same setup in less turns or with less casualties to their own?
Leaving the map via edges makes you lose the map, if every enemy is killed you win and get a score from the amount of shots fired, turns needed and damage to own people?

Something like that?

Sounds cool. Would be a much more convenient way to test changes which require the start of a new campaign. Match results, as you've described could, however, only be compared under strict adherence to identical ini settings, submods etc.

I think it could just use the .ini that was loaded on launch, so the settings would be identical. The options would come from the savegame that the mercs are loaded from. Any mod in effect is still in effect. It would be like any other tactical battle, with preconditions set by the player, and return to the title afterwards.

I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible so as not to scare the people that can actually pull it off. No special separate .ini or fancy setup.
