Hi Guys,

I am experimenting with different camera POV on military tactical map (it is for the in-game mechanics)
I was wondering what is your preferable point of view when you command&control units.
Have couple of example screenshots to share if you are intrested to give opinion.

I like that to be flexible. Not necessarily with stepless zoom and free tilt/rotation, it's okay if there are predefined settings. But if you cannot change your POV at all, that *is* a limitation. Fireaxis-XCOM does that allright in my book, you can mostly change the camera to whatever fits the situation.

In JA2, I'd like to have a better overview during enemy turns because sometimes you just can't tell what is going on...

Well, first unrelated comment: don't use DOX, it took me 5 minutes to download 12mb rar file and I have 1 Gbps fiber connection (which would download 12mb in a blink but instead I downloaded with 40 Kbps). And I just across the Danube from you. My advice would be to upload screenshots to Imgur. Or use Bear's Pit image forum (http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php/forums/80/1/Image_Gallery.html)

As for screenshots I think you're on the right track there. All 3 PoVs look good and useable. Only comment I'd have is that pretty much everything cool (tanks, chopper, missiles) is very dark and loses details. If you want the wow! factor in your game you should go for a lighter palette.

Thanks for comments.
I didn't realize that bandwidth could be so crappy Smile
Now these are uploaded at http://www.warcabinet.net/gallery/
Ja-galaxy gallery will follow
+1 AK render in the concept section to show how we plan to implement effects of weapon upgrades to battlefield units.
Good point with the light intensity! The only thing I am afraid is not to overuse lightning in the traditionally darker hours of the day.
I am still thinking about the best way to implement night time.
Should I use traditional green night vision color or something else?

Ahhh much better now, your gallery loads instantly!

Maybe you can tweak a bit the vehicle textures, dunno. If the screenshots are from night/dusk/sunset time then forget what I have said, they look ok for a night light. Can you upload a sunny/normal day version so we can compare?

The NVG camera should be used when it fits the story, otherwise it would be a waste of a cool feature.

Speaking of vehicles, this looks good:

This is too dark:

You should also copy the code below the image and paste it here. Like this:

This isn't bad at all. All those nice details are lost otherwise.

Hi,

Just updated the Migs in the sky.
http://www.warcabinet.net/gallery/pre-alpha-screenshots/
Feel free to upload any images here as well.
I think it's starting to get better.
Gradually we will replace most of the screen with better quality ones.

Cheers!

They look nice. The details and lights are better.

But no jet has blue exhaust fire, that's for spaceships in sci-fi movies. It's either afterburner blast or nothing visible.

I also don't fancy something about the paint. Just doesn't quite look natural. Dunno what exactly lacks... probably because the light doesn't reflect the paint looks mate, like on a toy. I am not a 3D artist, I am sure there's some technical explanation...

EDIT: I just noticed the farther jet has some body light reflections and looks better.

They both use the same shader.
All the difference is because of lightning effects.
It will fit best when lightning is applied as area effect for much more realistic view.
This will be done.

Fully agree for particles. It's just simple prefab which is not good for planes.
I will retain using it when making animated footage at later stage.
As you state it should be afterburner (with proper particles) or nothing.
Nice pic from polish Air forces Smile
