Hi guys,

According to the website toptens.com, the top 10 Best Assault Rifles are:

1.AK-47
2.FN SCAR
3.HK416
4.M16 Rifle
5.Heckler & Koch G36
6.ACR
7.M4A1 SOPMOD
8.Steyr AUG

What is your chart? Have you used any of above listed in gaming?

You are asking a community whose premier mod includes every AR ever made if they used the generic list of 10 common ARs while playing? Very Happy
I also seriously question the expertise of whoever made the original list. Why would you include the M4A1 twice but once refer to it by an accessory kit that would be usable by at least 3-5 other guns on the list (depending on specific version, they are all awfully generic)? Why include the M16 as the third direct descendant of the AR15 unless you have a serious 'Murica! boner? Why is the AK-47 the best when even the Russians quickly revised the basic design to the much more widespread AKM? Which SCAR are we even talking about?
Yes, I dislike 'Top Trumps' comparisons in general and this is a particularly bad example of the practice.

AK-47 is a hollywood myth AFAIK, this model never existed, because it's the name of the early prototype.
Real name was AK, then AKM, then AK-74.

p.s. I would say that the most well known ARs in the world are AK, FN FAL and M16.

Good read. Use serious references, don't read crap sites and ask for feedback on them.

As for that Top 10, they could put it themselves in the Top 10 of the most stupid Top 10s. That would work.

Not exactly a Hollywood myth but simply the name to define the design that people are talking about. If someone would just say AK you wouldn't know which model of the Avtomat Kalashnikova he is talking about.
Unfortunately often people say AK-47 when they are talking about some other model. You can read/see this nonsense all the time in the media for example...

As a general rule, anybody trying to sell you a definite 'Top Ten Best xyz' of any military hardware, be it rifles, tanks, planes, ... can be safely discarded. You can rank them by certain criteria, e.g. production numbers and proliferation or you can establish better/worse (or at least advantage/disadvantage) relations in a specific context with specific conditions but any sweeping, generalized list just panders to the preconceptions of a generally uninformed audience foreign to the topic at hand.

silversurfer I agree, but noone really in Russia calls AK as AK47, so it's mostly western media name for a 7.62 family, and it's really strange to see it from people who claim themselves as gun specialists =)

AK, AKM or 'Kalash' for the name of it's creator.

I`m agree with you. Here is one of the comments given by someone voted in favour for the AK-47... quote...It may be just a battle rifle to some people, but it's the smallest weapons that make the biggest difference. The AK shows up in virtually every conflict worldwide. AK-47s have been driven over by tanks, filled with mud and water, abused to where they're covered with rust, AND THEY STILL WORK. They require very little cleaning too. No weapon has ever caused more death. They'll be around when all of us are long dead. If any weapon deserves to be known as the best weapon in the world, let alone best assault rifle, it is the AK47... end of quote.

The poeple voted for this or that rifle, point out different characteristics, that is why I`m searching for your opinion.

That's an interesting little fact which isn't made that explicit in western sources. Though even if it's inaccurate, it stays a useful shorthand for whether you're talking about the first production model or the family at large.

It's widespread in conflict zones and very cheap (I doubt there's a tribe in Africa that doesn't own a couple). It's easy to repair and parts are easy to come by. It packs a lot of punch compared to 5.56mm. And it's spray and pray, made for the lowest of the low grunt with no aiming skills.

Those are the main qualities of the Kalashnikov.

Give an illiterate shepherd from some african tribe a fully kitted SCAR-H and he would (maybe) manage to fire the first magazine into the air then use it as fence post or something. Give a professional soldier the option to use a SCAR-H with 7.62mm or an ancient Kalashnikov and he would look at you in a funny way. Unless he was a spec ops behind enemy lines, then he would take the AK cause otherwise he'd give himself away at first shot.

Different tools for different jobs.

Interesting fact is that russian special forces (high professional anti terrorist squads and such) still use regular AK-74's. With tactical stocks, custom slings and grips and sometimes modern western reflex sights, but the base is stock AK-74, the same as used in army.
And the special forces can buy and use any modern rifles nowadays, but they say that it's more than enough for their needs (with proper custom tactical additions, mostly for convenience).

Depri - you got a point there... South Africa was a FN manufacturer and they got their part in spreading those in the conflict zones too.

Speaking of Western ignorance, the article reads:

Quote:
And so it began. Ishmael and his friends...upon threat of death if they tried to escape...became child soldiers like the one in the photo (Credit: Foreign Policy Assn). They were given AK-47 assault rifles, trained in how to attack and kill, and given marajuana, amphetamines

Sevenfm - I meant more this kind:

In the end it depends what conflicts were in the area and who supported each side and armed them. Here's a decent article in The Economist about the subject:

ROFL. Probably. And a wife for what he got for the SCAR-H attachments kit. Probably what those soldiers in the truck plan to do when going home, too.

Actually if you search Google images from images from that particular case you can see Kalashnikovs (of all sorts), FNs, SCARs, Colt Commando and M4A1's, G3A3's and God knows what else. It's amazing and tells a whole story about the modern wars in Africa.

But I still believe the African shepherds would take AKs over anything else. But not because of lack of supplies. Only as a fashion statement.

I am not that of an expert to know from half the weapon those subtle differences between G3 or FN. Show me the entire weapon and I can tell them apart. Fact remains though, once you google that terrorist incident you find out these dudes have all kinds of ARs.

From distance the stock half looks pretty similar, you must admit. But looking closely I must admit you're right, the G3 barrel cover (?) goes seamless with the rest of the weapon, while the FN doesn't.

Definitely a G3. As you say, the barrel cover tells all.
Never knew the G3 and FAL looked that similar. Always figured the FAL to be a whole lot more skinny... which I guess it is, but still.

IMHO, at that distance the straighter lines of a G3 stock are still visible. The magazine's also different enough. But yes, the main thing is the handguard.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go and mindlessly stare at pretty gun pics some more. Today's quota is not yet filled. Wink
