We've got a bunch of interesting character modifiers available these days. Traits, backgrounds, hate, love... among others. Sooo... why not let these play out a bit more?
An image of a pissed off merc shooting a friendly in the back comes to mind. "That's it, you son of a bitch!" A man with a gun can only take so much, no?
Emotions running wild out in the field, experience level too low, a merc sees their beloved go down in a blaze of gunfire. Perhaps a life mate, or a very dear friend. "I'll save ya! Don't you die on me!" Heart bigger than brain, said merc rushes off to save their friend. A mad dash with medical supplies in hand, will it be a 2-for-1 kill for enemy forces or will the downed merc survive?
Stuff like that. Movie type drama.

First of all, we cannot simply set mercs under AI control. Well, we can (we do that shortly during boxing), but this would cause them to kill each other. The AI can't handle be a bit hostile - it's either all or nothing. Much, much worse is that we cannot have people hostile to each other in the same team. The AI and loads of functions simply aren't made for this. No nope Njet non.
What we have in that regard is some sort of 'reflex' - if you deliberately fire upon a merc with another merc, he will fire back if he has a gun in his main hand. But more complicated stuff is tedious - punching someone would require us to take the merc, order him to walk next to someone, face him, empty our hands, and then punch. Every single one of these decisions has to be carefully handcrafted. And in turnbased, you'll risk breaking everything by messing with AI-controlled phases and whatnot.
It can be done, but I doubt the effort is worth the gain.
Stuff that happens in strategic only is of course, much, much easier to do
