I've recently added Henning von Branitz to my team, and I've noticed he never improves. He hasn't gotten a single marksmanship point yet from combat, and when put on practice or student or any other duty that should improve any of his stats, it just doesn't happen. I've sped up training, and my other mercs were able to gain 4-5 pts of a stat, while Henning hasn't gained any. The progress bar on the corresponding stat doesn't show up, and neither has it appeared on the "level" stat.

I haven't tried with other UB (or otherwise non-vanilla) mercs, so I can't say if it's an isolated incident. I also have no idea where to look to check for any relevant data/variable/switch.

In TableData/Mercprofiles.xml, Henning's profile has 1 set. This means just what you experience: His stats never improve.

Setting this to 0 will make him learn normally, but won't affect an ongoing campaign. You have to start a new one for that (or hack your savegame via debugger).

Ahhh I see. I noticed that entry, but I thought it had something to do with merc transformation like Larry (sober) > Larry (drunk).

Was that done intentionally? Is there a reason for having non-improving mercs, or was it just an omission?

Anyways, thanks for the answer!

I guess it was intended for old people that don't improve much, but its rather annoying (especially since there are other settings that simply slow down the improvement instead of nullifying it).

It's usually too old or too arrogant, H. would be the latter I think.

So can the non-improvable mercs level up?

I have to say, that's a pretty interesting idea, even though I usually play very slowly and take care to improve my mercs whenever possible.

However, maybe non-improving mercs should be marked as such? I don't think I'd use N/I mercs for a long time, because they'd be eventually surpassed by weaker ones with decent WIS. I can plan around using N/I mercs short-term, but getting one on a two-week contract and then finding it's a N/I merc would suck a bit, for me.

Or, if they would be using a variable learning rate, have the rate listed somewhere, or have it vaguely described?

// training defines for evolution, no stat increase, stat decrease( de-evolve )
typedef enum
{
	NORMAL_EVOLUTION =0,
	NO_EVOLUTION,
	DEVOLVE,
	THREEQUARTER_EVOLUTION,
	HALF_EVOLUTION,
	ONEQUARTER_EVOLUTION,
} CharacterEvolution;
Devolve (2) means that the character's stats are actually lowered instead of increased. 3, 4 and 5 are for slower learning.
