What's the deal with so many users having their names changed? Was this just an option during the migration or is it inheriting it from somewhere else, I noticed Wanne/Rowa is back to Rowa now, but it sure is getting confusing.

And Dieter is usrbid for example (I'm missing the :uhoh: smiley here).

Did anyone hear something from Dieter last time/year(s)? @Dieter: Are you doing well? Hopefully (missing :crossed: smiley here as well)!

Best regards; Schein...

PS: One of my biggest wishes for the new forum is an improved P.M. system and I hope I don't sound too nostalgic when I say that the old one was much better (adding more recipients and clear arrangement like a thread). I hope you Shanga can make improvements to the current P.M. system with FUD (:crossed: 2).

Apparently not all field mapping was 100% correct - UBB nicknames apparently were copied over to "name" fields in FUD instead of "alias". But that's a quick fix, everyone can just edit his account and set a custom nickname. Dieter's username is "usrbird" (that's what he used before taking the nickname "Dieter").

Current private messaging system is very primitive, worse than traditional emailing.

- No longer threaded
Sent & received messages are in 'Sent' & 'Inbox' folders respectively

- Past messaging history not congregated anymore
Only the last reply is shown, rendering archiving and referencing almost useless/time-consuming.

- Group private messaging now works like forced BCC function
Participants are not aware of one other and can only reply to the originator.

So now it's only feasible to be used for hush hush between you and me. suprised

I say, pretty 'undemocratic'/'shortsighted' for an open source software on its default preset.
(In our hush hush land, we use a 4-letter word for it, 'S***'.)

I am very well aware how PMs are, but unless you're willing to code a whole new PM system for FUD, I can only do minor adjustments for now. The commercial alternatives for migration were around 500 euro with recurring licenses. The Open source alternatives were Simple Machines - which we tried already and had a bug that restored ALL DELETED PMSs and messed them up for good and phpbb which has no UBB importer. So we need to work with what we have.

If only I can code that well... All I can say is I'm just a touch-up coder.

Anyway, then it might be a good idea to consolidate and list the advantages & limitations of FUD software, rather than letting each user to discover and seek for alternative methods on their own. Any suggested recommendations/workarounds will definitely help us settle in.

A good place probably will be in this thread's first post.

P.S. Have this been tried?

Sorry to be a PITA, but I found another problem.

XML segments in "Code" brackets seem to have lost their xml tags during migration. See example:

index.php?t=getfile&id=18&private=0

For comparison, here is how it looked in the old forum...

Let me test this:

...
<STRUCTURE><!-- wooden planks, medium -->
	<usDeconstructItem>5832</usDeconstructItem>
	<usItemToCreate>1544</usItemToCreate>
	<usCreatedItemStatus>100</usCreatedItemStatus>
	<szTileSetName>deb_02.sti</szTileSetName>
	<allowedtile>1</allowedtile>
	<allowedtile>2</allowedtile>
</STRUCTURE>
...

You're right, but it's not a censor function of the FUD. Probably the CODE function on UBB generated some mess that wasn't palatable for FUD (as it did with the BBcode).

Can't do much but keep the both forums open until the relevant info is moved here by hand. Automatic migration has showed its limits.

Any news on when we can get some useful functions (Active Topics, PM threads...) back? I'm finding posts I'd have liked to answer a week ago, because finding out if something was posted is non-trivial now...

What I find somewhat useful is the "unread messages" filter. With that I can at least see what has been posted in my absence. Unfortunately once these posts have been acknowledged they are gone forever from that list. A list of recent active topics like in the old forum would be nice.

I am tied until the end of the month with work that's pretty critical.

Message Navigator feature works like an extended Active topics (which in turn was just a dumb search for topics created in the last 24/48h).

Threaded mail messages is a bit more tricky, but hopefully I'll get something done.

I'd rather say it works like a dumber Active Topics. The most critical flaw is order of results which is 'subforums, then date' and thus forces you to manually scan the whole list anyway. If that thing was ordering the threads by newest post, it would actually be usable.

That's what I use as well. However I have repeatedly seen instances where some posts would not show up under the "unread messages" filter but could be found under the "today's messages" setting although I definitly hadn't read them before. Haven't found yet which circumstances trigger this behaviour...

I am not quite sure if this staill remains a question or not...will anyone mannually move the old posts with XML code to the new forum?

I realize that the posts on th old forum is not accessable anymore, but the new ones here still lacks the proper xml code. Is it possible to restore such code? or any alternative solutions? In fact I would like to understand some XML tags related to overheating and others in the items.xml. Posts without proper XML code really do not help much ...

Thanks for help!

Well, the moderators will go through all the old links and point them to the content on the new board. But takes time since it has to be done by hand (the link structure between the two platforms has nothing in common).

Any specific topic with broken links on your mind?

If we can't have 'Active Topics' back, can we get at least something like this? It's at least close to what it was. Today's messages/Unread messages is useless. I don't want to comb through all messages just to find a new one.

To clarify: I want this as a button I can click. So that I can see what has happened with one easy click.

Okay, that's better... would it be possible to slightly change that so that clicking on one of those 'Active topics' links you to the last post (the 'active' one) and not the starting post?

I haven't looked inside the code too closely, but probably yes on both counts. I am running it as a test but if it does what it's supposed to do I'll improve it in the future and integrate it better with the layout.

Sadly no solution for the PMs yet, seems like the FUD devs have a complete hate towards PMs and unwillingness to improve them.

We have managed to finally migrate BP to a new forum platform.

There are some residual issues with links. Also I am not sure how much control you have over the Active topics section, but since it essentially track new posts it would be nice if it could linked to them instead of the first. Also its annoying that the list isn't filtered for inaccessible entries e.g.

If something can be done about that, it would be greatly appreciated by new users like myself, averting the situation where most of the active post are inaccessible, as it was a couple of days ago.

Hello Shanga,

I think a big drawback of the new Bear's Pit (FUD) forum against the old BP (UBB) is that the new forum has way too many topics covered on the front page.

The new member has problems to find the active and/or for him relevant topic(s), because of this "flood" of different (but not active!) topics on the front page.

The most active section is surely the v1.13 MOD PROJECTS with its two:

-MODDERS HQ v1.13
-PLAYERS HQ v1.13

But even FULL CONTROL GAMES has 4(!) topics on the front page, but 'Why?
There is not an active discussion there.
(note: I know I have the option in new BP to maximize/minimize a category with +/- , but that is suboptimal and not the answer to the actual/basic problem for me!)

Or for example why every classic JA2 or UB mod needs an own forum on the front page when often the last message is older than one year (see the JA2 Urban Chaos (Classic) topic for example with last message from 29.02.2012)?
The old Bear's Pit was more clearly and better arranged here in my opinion with less main forums on the front page but more (and visible!) subforums:

http://zupimages.net/up/15/46/hluv.jpg

As mentioned above^^^ another disadvantage of the new BP is that you can not see which and how many subforums are included in a specific main forum (topic).
You are forced to click through a "jungle" to find the specific topic/subforum you want.
For example I can not see on first view like in old BP that MODDERS HQ v1.13 has 6 subforums like Flugente's Magika Workshop, Depri's v1.13 Builds and Packages... and such.
Or that v1.13 Modding, Customising, Editing subforum has 4 other subforums again like v1.13 XML Customization , v1.13 INI Customisation and Help...

This is not very user-friendly especially for the new members. Even I have problems to find the section I want. How can we expect that from a new member then to post in the right section?

It would be nice if you would find the time to check and update this eventually.
As I said the old BP with limited main forums but visible subforums was much more clear and user-friendly here I think. Maybe you can use the old (sub-)forum system as base for any changes here.

More (and imo outdated) topics on the front page doesn't mean more active discussion for a forum, no, I think more complexity kills any new discussion overall.

Thank you.

Best regards; Schein...

Thank you for your quick answer!
It is really weird. There is also nothing in spam folder (web.de), but it worked before?
I already had this problem in the old Pit. First it was working and I got notification about a P.M. via e-mail and later I got no notification anymore?

Maybe Shanga you have a free minute to check my Account Settings please?

Thank you!

Edit: No. I get no e-mail notification anymore about a new P.M. in the Pit. :-(
