I was really excited when it was announced then I remembered that the recent JA games were a bit underwhelming so I waited a bit.

Is it worth buying it ?

Unfortunately, no.

If you get it really cheap you may get a few decent hours of superficial fun out of it, but I didn't even bother finishing the campaign (and I'm quite far into it). And I say this as a backer who invested 105 USD.

Released way too early. Could've done with at least another 6 months of development.

1.13: Install JA2, unpack latest, play.
AIMNAS: Complete 1.13 installation, Download ZIP and unpack, play.

I was wondering about this too. Thanks for the feedback!

So what's the best JA game right now?

@BlueTrin
I found it worth the money but be aware that there is a certain risk that you dont like it. The dev wants to fix 2 more bugs and then there will be probably no more patches after that.

@tbird94lx
I think the difficulty setting only changes how much damage the enemys will do.

Funny enough the first sector is one of the very toughst ingame. It was much easier before but they changed it because people complained of it being to easy.
The road fights a pretty tough too. But after figuring out how the fight system works (takes a while to really get it) its also no problem on impossible setting.

Well, it's official now: Full Control has been closed, the dev team disbanded and currently only Thomas Lund is still working on JA:F for a limited time.

Money ran out, it was a tightrope walk from the beginning. So unless we get the full rights on JA:F somehow, this game will most likely stay the way it is and even all the modders in the world will not be able to improve it much.

In other words: if you can get it for 5 - 10 bucks at most at a Steam sale or so, go for it. But only if you have already low expectations.

Sorry old chap, it very much looks like it. JA:F was a valiant effort that ended up stillborn, not the JA messiah we all hoped for.

It really seems like our only chance to ever get a worthy successor is, to take matters in our own hands as a community and go full dev mode.

Just to put things straight: FC has not been closed and probably will not be closed. Only the JAF-team is no more, except for Thomas Lund.

The game itself hasn't much of JA. It simply lacks the personality and some important features. But for me it's still an okay tactical game and was at least a serious attempt to "modernize" JA...

Sadly enough, this doesn't exactly put FC on my list of well liked, reliable developers. The whole "hoping for a smooth launch" thing must've been a joke, right?

Nope, meanwhile FC has been closed down due to bancruptcy, all personell has been layd off. Funny how even a studio which actually made somewhat solid profits on its games can go down like this. JA:F probably was its last hope of staying in the business, but it failed due to funding running out too quickly, cutting short the development time and scope. Seems like it just takes a lot more than that to adequately recreate a brilliant classic like JA2 - or a worthy sequel. Maybe a top rank professional dev studio with multi-million budget - or a bunch of very, VERY dedicated and able fans?

among pc games its with the longest running fanbase with civilization and simcity fanbases...and they keep updating regular..ours fanbase is still addicted to 1999 game thats just tweaked..you'd think a solid developer would see that and think there might be something here

You know, it is not like no one has tried yet. But it always were some low level, relatively inexperienced dev studios with low ranking publishers trying too hard to be unnecessarily innovative with the franchise and thus failing miserably on living up to the standards set by SirTech 10 - 15 years ago and a truly dedicated fanbase, refusing to let a true classic die whilst waiting faithfully for a worthy successor.

On the other hand, SirTech pretty much was an obscure indie developer too back in the days, having created little more than this one rather successful franchise during its existence. One that seemingly cannot really die gracefully, but also somehow cannot be successfully resurrected or rebooted. Must be some sort of curse, maybe that's why no serious developer is touching it?

But seeing the recent revival of turn based strategy and tactics games, it really is not the genre that is unpopular or unprofitable.

But on the other hand, the rather underwhelming support of the Kickstarter campaign for JA:F was a clear indicator that the JA franchise isn't as popular as we would like it to be.

Those crowdfunded Games that really make it on release and deliver as hoped usually reach a clear overfunding many times over, thus giving the devs ample time and space to breathe and deliver a quality product. JA:F barely made the minimum, which was way too tightly calculated also. But then again, FC didn't really have to show anything at the Kickstarter, which would instill confidence in their skills and the product they were peddling. Other devs at least have some alpha gameplay to show and lots of impressive artwork.

I'd wager, if this community could cobble together a working demo of a decent JA style game on a modern engine, it could collect more crowdfunds than FC did easily.

The company will stay alive, even if they won't develop games anymore...

But I guess that doesn't matter anymore ;).

If they they were half descent programmers - developers then they would still had a job to do. Goodbye guys no one will miss you. Except perhaps the guys that spend their ACTUALLY hard earned money into funding you for a joke.
I am really dissapointed how this site was supporting all the time a game like that. Even when it came out and it looked like something of an early ALPHA stage they were still screams as how this game will GEAR UP.
Even the JA back in action is probably better than this ATTEMPT to a pc game. Thank god i didn't spend a single 1$ on this one. I support only real efforts and not money grabbing schemes. XCOM i had mixed opinions and then Long War came on i supported that with cash (paypal donations) and went on and bought the FULL game cause now it was a real game. So goodbye FULL CONTROL and good riddance.

I really can't believe that the company released a game with 10% content of the original JA and expected people to actually buy it so they can finish the rest of 90%. REALLY? I kept on laughing as they were saying that bad reviews on steam were hurting sales and such... Oh then maybe you should make a better game next time? Or we should lie in order for you to sell more?
