Has there been any consideration among our magnificent feature programmers for opening doors without standing directly in front of them?

Tactical door opening would logically be followed by throwing grenades around corners without exposing the thrower's body, though I imagine that's probably a more difficult progamming challenge.

Opening doors from the side can be done, but in itself has a rather low benefit (if one wants to pass it, one has to expose yourself anyway). A viable player tactic would be to place a gunner some distance away and gun down anybody once that door is opened - a tactic the AI can hardly be taught, as it does not cooperate.

Throwing grenades 'around the edge' boils down to violating the code - either throw the grenade from a tile the merc does not occupy, or throw it through a solid wall. Both will look hideous and will require furter ugly hacks and/or cause crashes.

And no, nobody will do animations for that, because that is work nobody can be assed to do happy

In my opinion it wouldn't even be worth it. The grenade explosion radius is so small that even hitting someone in a room is a lottery unless you know where they are. 'Fixing' that by increasing explosion radius by several magnitudes would seriosuly unbalance the game.

TL;DR: Have considered it, can be done, don't like it, won't code it.

I already thought about changing the lockpicking behaviour. At the moment the merc picks the lock and after that directly opens the door. I think it would be better if he just picks the lock and we have to open the door separately. IIRC opening a door takes less AP so if we do it in another turn we have more AP left to do something. This may also lay a foundation for opening the door from the side if somebody decides to implement it. ;)
