Arulco Vacations

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/b6eb/f91xdy91czt4rkgzg.jpg

a mod for JA2 v1.13 r7435 b7609

Arulco Vacations is an overhaul mod of the JA2v1.13 mod, which is an overhaul mod of JA2. AV started out as an innocent tweak, and grew into the monster that wrecked havoc across 4 states. Basically, it is a vacation from the vanilla linear game play, and includes everything I can fit into it. I borrow heavily from past mods - ideas, graphics (I'm terrible at graphics), and have had contributions from many JA2 modders and players who have done things better than I could have. Anything I'd like to see in a game that I play . . . is what AV is: a version of JA2 I want to sit down and play for 3 months or so before modding it some more. Now that this release is out, that's exactly what I'm going to do. <fingers crossed>

* Enhanced and enlarged gear kits for all named characters
* All maps re-designed for v12
* Many new items & weapons
* Re-designed picklists for Enemy Weapons & Items
* The Queen has new priorities
* More garrisons and new garrison compositions
* Re-designed patrols and patrol routes
* Revamped Sector Coolness ratings system
* Revised Item Coolness ratings system
* New A.I.M. character available for recruitment
* New M.E.R.C. characters available for recruitment
* More recruitable characters in-country
* More interactive shopkeepers
* New Character Backgrounds
* Greatly enhanced original Character Backgrounds
* More money to begin your regime change efforts
* More Facility Types
* Improved original Facility Types
* More Facilities on-map
* Modified Morale & Reputation system allows hit-and-run & raid tactics
* Detailed Militia profiles with Skills
* Refashioned Town Loyalty design
* Expanded Morale & Loyalty system
* lots more things --

-- so get ready for a fun vacation in a war zone!

YOUR MISSION: Overthrow an evil dictator, meet interesting people and have a little fun in the sun. Basically the same as the vanilla game, just more of everything.

YOUR TEAM: You and your squad of professional mercenaries possess the training and equipment to carry out your mission-- and some of you might even survive.

THE ENEMY: The army opposing you is as well prepared for war as you are. Their weapons and strengths will match or exceed yours. Do not underestimate them.

Arulco Vacations is designed to be used with a clean install of JA2 1.12 with the stable v1.13 r7435 b7609 installed on top of it.

If you have the unofficial r7769 patch you can install that after the b7609 install -- but it is not necessary so don't worry about it.

Using any other release, build or update is done at your own risk. I have not tested this with any other release, build or update.

Arulco Vacations v12
Install Directions

It is designed to work with r7609. It will not work with the development builds.

The Step-by-Step Instructions for a Clean Install

1) Install Jagged Alliance 2 v1.12

2) Install JA2 v1.13 Full Release 7435, overwriting all files.

3) Install JA2 v1.13 Update 7609 for Release 7435, overwriting all files.

4) Run the zPatch.bat file found in the main game folder.

5) Extract Arulco Vacations v12 VFS Install Package, overwriting the ja2.ini file.

6) Download the latest release of Sevenfm's +AI executable and place in your main game folder.

7) Create a desktop launcher icon for Arulco Vacations pointing to the "ja2_7609en+AI" executable, and using the included AV icon in the main game folder.
. . .
8) Start game, enjoy, kick ass.

The Default Game Option Settings included in Arulco Vacations are what is used when I mod and play, and what AV is designed around. Please set these up as you like when you start a new game. I use the latest +AI executable from Sevenfm as I play and mod, and I highly recommend following his updates on that project.

Ten (10) IMP voice sets are on by default, 5 Male & 5 Female

I've mostly been spoiled by the maximalism of AIMNAS but this sounds very interesting, and I'm going to give it a go. Thank you very much for your work on it.

I can completely understand being spoiled by AIMNAS! Perhaps a merger might be a possible variant down the road -- but I'd want to get Smeagol's permission before doing something like that.

Thank you for giving AV a go. Please let me know your impressions, good and bad. They will help me make future versions better.

A copy-paste of the AIMNAS item/weapon system could work, but it would require a lot of massaging. The AIMNAS arsenal is designed for bigmaps, though I think there are INI variables somewhere for globally modifying vision/weapon ranges. If true, it might be possible to sort of make the two meld, maybe. The extended facilities and adjusted character personalities are probably much easier to port over.

All of this is just ideas for mucking around for amusement. Actually publishing it would call for Smeagol's permission, of course.

Thinking about it . . . it would be a big task no matter how you look at it. You could take my Character Backgrounds & Facilities directly over to his system, I think. But other than that a lot of work is called for because the Items.XML in both are so different and that impacts so much in the game. But it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

There's still a lot of life in this game so we'll have to see what the future brings!

I think the hardest part would be replacing pre-placed items on maps, since I think it's the only place you couldn't just replace item references in bulk.

Yes, you're right -- I forgot about 'Find & replace all'. The maps wouldn't be that hard, just a little tedious to get them exactly . . . but who says they have to be exact? In fact, someone mentioned on my blog about the random item feature for maps . . . I couldn't get it working like I wanted, but that was probably me doing something wrong. I will try again, and if I get that working right then I'll re-do my maps with it, and then that whole process would be simplified also.

If maps are done with the new random items, then its much easier to switch out specific items, because the maps use the random entry, and then the modder writes the list to match his mod. I know there was a lot of talk a few months back about random and getting the bigname mods to work with it on their maps so that other people could adjust things in a more forgiving manner.

Yes. you're right. I just couldn't get the random item function to work. I spent a bunch of time on it during the pre-v1 version ofAV, then abandoned it because I had so much else to do. I do intend to go back and try again now that I've learned a lot more about how things work under the hood. I find working on maps easy, so adding the random item function to them will not be hard -- once I get it to work properly.

Is there any mod that uses this feature? I'd like to take a look at how they went about getting it to function.

The xml editor will not work. Use a text editor. I've never used the XML Editor. The problem you seem to be running into here is because my Items.xml includes new items. Also, I seem to have a duplicate record in a merchant inventory. Not atmy computer now so I can't investigate further.

As far as the release is concerned: I have only tested AR with r7609.

Thank you for pointing this out. I did have a couple duplicate index entries in the merchant files that I was not aware of. As well, there was a typo in Keith's Inventory (the 3000 should be 300). They are fixed now. The other errors in Merges.xml & Item_Transformations.xml must be because you are using release 7883 instead of 7609.

An Inventory Patch for v1.03 is now available on the Arulco Vacations blog's Download Page that fixes an error in Keith's starting gear, and two errors in Sam & Frank's Merchant inventory. Thank you to Parkan for pointing these errors out to me.

Version 1.04 of Arulco Vacations for JA2 v1.13 r7435b7609 is ready for download!

Arulco Vacations v1.04 is a massive tweak of JA2v1.13. v1.03 brought all new gearkits for all named characters, new maps, new items, new Enemy picklists, new priorities for the Queen, new garrisons, new patrols, new Sector Coolness ratings, new item Coolness ratings, a new A.I.M. character, more cash to begin with, new Facility Types, new Morale & Reputation system, new Character Backgrounds, all old Character Backgrounds greatly enhanced, more Facilities on-map, and more of lots of things. v1.04 adds enhancements to the new backgrounds, adds more new backgrounds for your I.M.P., adds a major enhancement to the relationships of every named character, adds more new maps and enhancements to previous maps, extends Kingpin's area of operations outside of San Mona, connects the gun smugglers to Tony as part of his operation, extends the Hick family to have 'cousins' in Cambria, has the terrorist Jasmin recruit his own militia brings medics, mechanics and radio operators to the Arulcan Army, adds food and other civilian items to all the new town maps, gives new battle orders to the Arulcan Army, adds a new female I.M.P portrait (the Wildfire "Ira as I.M.P." portrait), adds 76 new sector loadscreens (most of them done by my graphic artist friend, D.G.) upgrades many of the NPCs, and much more! There are a lot more strategic decisions to be made by the player -- get ready for a vacation in a war zone!

Use a clean install of JA2 1.12 with the stable v1.13 r7435 b7609 installed on top of it, and v1.04 of Arulco Vacations installed over all of that (overwriting all files). If you have the unofficial r7769 patch you can install that after the b7609 install -- but it is not necessary so don't worry about it. Using any other release, build or update is done at your own risk. I have not tested this with any other release, build or update.

Map SNAFUs . . . In a filing snafu I included the previous Sector C9 Map instead of the new Demoville-based Sector C9 Map. I made a map patch that will replace the old C9 Map and RadarMap with the new Demoville-Style C9 Map and RadarMap. Download the file from the Downloads page of the Arulco Vacations blog and simply extract the archive into your main game folder, overwriting both files. If you haven't visited Sector C9 yet then you can add this map file without worry. if you have visited this Sector then remove all items from the Sector before applying this Map Patch.

In another filing SNAFU regarding maps . . . there are 2 Sector C13 maps included. I am running Linux, which differentiates between upper and lower case letters in file names. During the course of modding the old C13 map got saved with the following file extension ".DAT", while the newer one was saved with ".dat" extension. If you are running the game under WINE like I am then the game chooses the old map. If you are running Windows then probably one or the other file was overwritten, I don't know which. You can delete the file with the upper-case letters (".DAT"). You will find it in your "../Profiles/UserProfile_JA2113/MAPS/" folder.

Facilities Update for Arulco Vacations

Two new Facilities in Balime and a one Facility in Sector C13 moved to D13. There is now an upscale Coffee Shop and a Pawn Shop in Balime. The Coffee Shop building was added to the Balime map for v1.04, and the Pawn Shop building was identified (given the "Kwik $$$" store sign) for v1.04. The Coffee Shop is an Ambient Facility -- the effects happen without Player input. The Pawn Shop is available to aid in repairing basic items by purchasing pawned items (by using an hourly charge to your account). Details are available on the Facilities page of the Arulco Vacations blog.

The Medical Support Facility (previously, and in other mods of JA2, known as the Combat Support Facility) which had existed in Sector C13 has been moved to D13. There never was a building in C13 that was identifiable as a medical facility, but there always has been a medical/dental facility identifiable in D13. In Arulco Vacations that medical/dental building in Sector D13 has been enlarged, stocked, and now with this Facilities update will represent the Medical Support Facility. You can download the Facilities Update from the Download page of the blog. This update can be safely added to your existing campaign as it will not break saved games.

EDIT: Oh, and an A.C.A. building was added to Balime for v1.04 but I forgot to include the Facility linked to it. This update fixes that.

4th & 5th Female I.M.P. Voice Pack

Thanks go out to "merc05" for creating these voice packs! Arulco Vacations uses them as the 4th and 5th Female I.M.P. voices. One has a slight British accent, and the other has a Eastern European accent. They occupy the slots previously assigned to the 6th and 7th Male (Russian) voices. If you are using the 6th or 7th Male voice in your game, or you have modified Ja2_Options.INI, MercOpinions.XML, Backgrounds.XML or MercProfiles.XML then this Add-On will break your save game (and change the above-mentioned .XML files). If you are not using the 6th or 7th Male voice and you have not modified Ja2_Options.INI, MercOpinions.XML, Backgrounds.XML or MercProfiles.XML then you can use this Add-On without problems. Simply extract the files into your main game folder, overwriting all files. If you want to save the 6th and 7th Male voice set then read the Add-Ons page for more info.

With this voicepack add-on Arulco Vacations now has 5 male and 5 female voices for I.M.P. creation. This voicepack is available on the Downloads page of the Arulco Vacations blog.

Once again, Thank you "merc05"!!!

P.S. as a bonus, a slightly updated EDT file for Hector Alvarez is included -- just a simple spelling fix for his speech bubbles.

Inventory Update

This is a re-working of IMPItemChoices.XML, GunChoices_Enemy_Regular.XML, ItemChoices_Enemy_Admin.XML, ItemChoices_Enemy_Regular.XML, and ItemChoices_Enemy_Elite.XML. The intent was to give I.M.P.s a more powerful selection that is more responsive to their actual Ability scores and selected Traits, and to further standardize the Arulcan Army. This Update will not break your saved games but will not update I.M.P.s already created or Arulcan Army already spawned. It will update new I.M.P.s and new spawnings of Arulcan Army. Simply extract the files into your main game folder, overwriting all files. The Inventory Update is available on the Downloads Page of the Arulco Vacations blog.

I made militia training more difficult. You'll need a 42 minimum Town Loyalty, have at least one of the rebels (Ira, Dimitri, Carlos, Miguel) recruited, and a minimum Leadership of 33.

Arulco Vacations is more difficult in certain aspects (like training militia) but easier in other aspects (like starting equipment). I am trying for a less gamey, more realistic approach. That said, I am also trying for a B-Movie flavour with the sci-fi aspect. Check out the Arulco Vacations blog -- a lot of info there on how the mod was put together, and what the Player can expect.

Thanks Ed, great mod BTW, The approval finally came up enough in Drassen I had to take three other towns. I started with 5 IMP mercs so money isn't an issue, but I kinda miss the difficulty of needing the mines right away to fund your AIM mercs and militia. To me that is that JA is really about. Maybe IMP mercs should cost more like 15k+ gear to bring their value more in line with AIM mercs.

One thing I did notice is Father Walker is not where he usually is. Other than that the game is pretty fun. The massive counter attacks are really hard to deal with but regular sectors are pretty easy to take at night. I use Shadow Plus my IMP merc with suppressed AR-15s and night vision goggles and they can handle 10 guys no problem. Feels sort of cheesy cause they are mostly red shirts and even with good weapons they are sitting ducks at night. Does the army have better night performance later in the game?

Also. I currently have an issue now where gun cleaning has no effect. Any ideas on that?

OK. I have a couple more things I am working on -- when they are finished (very soon, a day or two) I will upload a v1.04d version complete install.

My apologies. I got so involved that a v1.04d patch was scrapped in favour of a full v1.05 -- and I don't just mean a name change! I tried to get it out the door the past two weekends, but having just started a new job in rl has taken away most of my free time. I am hoping to release it this weekend, but my car just died and I have to do something about that this weekend . . . you know the story, Murphy's Law . . ..

I've had a chance to play a little -- amazing how you find stuff wrong while playing when you don't find them playtesting <sigh>) -- so I'm going to start a Bug page on my blog. Be careful with the new .30-06 ammo -- save before putting the 8-round clips into a 5-round rifle . . . it sometimes CTDs. Also, the .30-06 ammo graphics are a bit off -- sorry about that. Somehow I switched the AP & HP graphics. All in all, nothing game-breaking (knock on wood), just a little annoying. I'll get a fix out ASAP.

I actually was thinking about this same situation -- and thought of the SVT-40 & the G.43 also. The G.43 might not make it in, but the SVT-40 was produced in quite sufficient numbers so their appearance in Arulco will not be an anomaly. However, I wanted to get v1.05 out, and not spend more time adding items -- so it's scheduled for v1.06.
