I'm starting to think about wrapping up work on v1.04 and would like Player requests for new stuff to be included in v1.04. Modified Sectors, additional items, modified Army loadouts, modified RPC gear kits, and anything else you would like to see in Arulco Vacations. So if you got something you'd like to see in Arulco vacations just give me a holler! I'll do my best to get it in there.

I speak for many years that the creation of an additional two levels (second floor and "trench") is the second, refreshed life of the game.
This is the most important.
Among other things I would see:
- Additional skills: swimming (impact level to maximum load during swimming)
- Climbing (impact level to the maximum load when climbing). When will additional levels.

Additional weather: fog, falling snow, wind.

It's the first of which I think.
I have more ideas.



Many thanks to all those who make new features for Jagged Alliance 2.

New mod + new map (JA2 map with Drassen, Omerta, Cambria etc, edited or not-it has been repeatedly ) with large sectors + two additional levels + a lot of new tileset + moving vehicles = fun for months, years. Fun with creation, fun playing this mod.

@Randok Yes, those are all great features I would love to see in JA2. However, I am not doing any code work so I am not the person to ask for that. I will, however, add my voice to yours that these things would greatly enhance the game.

As you've grouped the terrorists together to make them more of a challenge, two ideas in that regard:
  • Wouldn't it be possible to instead have each terrorist have its own faction (so several terrorist fractions then), have him placed in a different sector, and then have several armed non-profile NPCs there? T-Rex bio says he's a rightwing nutjob that had previously trained his own militia (or sth. like that), so it would be reasonable to have him be accompanied by several of his thugs. And that... uh... mob-guy could have several mobsters around him. I'm not at the code atm, so I'm not sure how far that would be possible (but it should be, considering UC/DL do just that).
  • How about increasing the Hicks faction? It would be somewhat justifiable to have some of them in Cambria itself (unannounced to the player). So if we wipe them out on their farm, some of their cousins are still in the city and will want revenge whenever we visit those sectors.
Just food for thought.

Those are all excellent ideas! I was thinking around the edges of those ideas a little . . . such as having some of Kingpin's men in areas other than San Mona. Yes, I definitely will experiment with those ideas! Thank you!

I'd like a separate map set tailored to AFS. Loot, enemy weapon choices, merc profiles. All that goodness.

Not that I've tried Arulco Vacations yet but I imagine that playing with AFS right now would mess things up quite a lot.

Requesting this mainly for Let's Play purposes.

I have one request regarding IMP:
It would be great to disable the mimimal level needed in Explosions for Engineer trait. Always wanted to have my own mech, but as he is forced to have both mech and explosive skill so high, he necessarily needs to go down in other stats, making him way to uncomfortable for use (I insist on all my IMP mercs to be at least good in combat).

That is hard-coded (someone will correct me if I'm wrong). I haven't yet delved into modifying the code. I've thought about it . . . but I just don't have the time to familiarize myself with the code, and I haven't done any coding in a very long time.

it's a small thing but considering how big and thorough work is already done i'd really like some little tweaking in that buddies and foes system. as a compatriot of Scream and Brain - and former first lieutenant of soviet infantry (in reserve) - i have some first-hand information not very popular in western world.

baltic states were occupied by soviet union in 1940 and most of the people never forgot of forgave it. 30 000 were deported to Siberia etc. more often than not the hatred against soviets turned into hatred against russians. so me and my squad (with also local russians in it) had absolutely no doubt that in case of some trouble escalating to armed conflict we'll turn the muzzles of our AKMs to the east, not to the west.

so, as i see it, for Brain the most hated guy - up to murder attempts - is Ivan, also hated are Monk, Igor and Fidel. Igmus is not a russian name, he may be a member of some ethnic minority and therefore not hated.

Scream, raised in Siberia, may have some serious reasons to hate asians. still, Ivan, Monk, Igor and Fidel should go onto his hate list also.

it's not necessarily mutual, russians may be just surprised: wtf, we were all a big happy family together... still, usually russians did not trust people from baltics, called them fascists etc. and it does not necessarily make Gasket our new best friend. i'd say Scream and Brain should have respect for NATO professionals, especially from USA and GB. some waryness regarding germans and french. but it's understandable that our nowadays NATO partners did not trust us in 1990ies.

Scream and Brain could be buddies with young Barry and naturally with Steroid. estonians and hungarians are somehow (linguistically) related nations, so we are also somewhat racist and sexist - in the same time we are the least religious nation in erurope, so a kleptomaniac reverend may be quite irritating.

You have some very good suggestions. I am aware that the Baltic peoples have an intense dislike for their Soviet occupation. I was hesitant to do too much with Brain & Scream because I am not familiar with the Wildfire mod. However, knowing the real history of the Soviet occupation of the Baltics I have wanted to make most of the changes you suggest. Now, I will. Thank you for your input.

The only question I have is: why Fidel? If Igmus gets a pass because of ethnicity, why not Fidel -- who is Cuban? Iggy is obviously passing as a Russian, whatever his true ethnicity, while Cubans in 1999 have no love for the ex-Soviet Union.

The other caveat is that we can only put 3 people on the Hated list, and one more in the Learn to Dislike slot. However, the MercOpinions.XML will let us 'dislike' a lot more people, but at a lower intensity than Hate. For info, yes we can unofficially put a lot of people on the Hate list by putting a big enough negative modifier in MercOpinions.XML -- but that causes glitches because the game expects only 3+1.

I can't make them kill a Hated -- that's codework.

Gasket is funny, I like this character - he's a redneck - drinking beer, watching TV, hating damn communists and fixing his car. And Ivan is also stereotype character - "Yes, I will work for you, damn capitalist!"
If you can make Brian a funny Estonian "Russian hater" that would be cool, but I don't think it's what was suggested - some players take this game too seriously.

I don't think you can learn history at game forum, but most of the people just don't have enough time (and motivation) to read books about history of other countries, so it's a common problem.

What I personally really dislike is when people bring serious political discussion to game forums that are supposed to give some fun and amusement.

I like Gasket also. And, yes, he's funny. That's what makes him likeable. Real rednecks are not funny and not likeable -- in my opinion, and I live amongst them. Comedy takes a special knack of knowing the reality of a situation and twisting it to be funny instead of tragic. It's not funny if it isn't true.

As for making Brain & Scream funny -- I don't know. I've never played them much because I don't fully understand their characters. So I don't know if they have enough voice files to be modified to be "funny Russian haters" or not.

ok, let's get Fidel off the hook... cuba is quite far from here and, let's say, in 1980ies it seemed to us that all cubans are serious supporters of soviet union. in 1990ies the picture became a bit clearer.
as Brain is a loner - and typical estonian - he will not show his feelings. when drunk, he'll sing sad songs - not sure there is option for that. all his missing replicas can be filled with "hmh", "meh" and "err...". estonians are considered slow - only our neigbours the finns find us suspiciously fast-talking. as about any nation, there are probably tons of anecdotes about estonians:

i'd like to underline that i do not hate russians. i have had russian friends and coworkers, i listen to russian bands, i read russian literature (mostly scifi) naturally in russian. but i'm somewhat wary of some aspects of russian foreign politics. sorry if it's too much for a game forum.

Yeah, please leave that politics talk out of this forum. I get enough of that shit every day on the news and I can tell you that our western propaganda is not one bit better than Russian propaganda. All politics is based exclusively on greed, ideology and financial interests no matter which country you live in and I'm sick of it. Like the US or European countries are "better" than Russia. Haha. Almost all countries on this planet are dictatorships of one form or another and they all only care for their own interests. I know your point and it have a lot of truth in it, but this line of thought is also a dangerous mistake. If it was just about normal greed and wealth driven narrative I really wouldn't care. But believe it or not for a lot of people out there money is just a dirty tool for principles and goals both more deep and wide than just that. One could say, that just as it should be; yes, I'm myself adore such way of thought and worldview to a degree. But exactly because of that, and the inability to understand that by many in the west, what happens in Russia now, and how they play the world, is extremely dangerous.

By the way... My grandad was proud he did go trough WW2 without making a short - despite wearing in turn both russian and german uniforms. Nice work overall and much appreciated !!
However there are 2 things i would like to point out and if i am wrong somewhere, by all means, do correct me. Here goes.....

First is the matter of aim-clicks. When my merc has the Sniper perk, a sniper rifle with a 10x scope(high threshold), a bipod and being in the prone position, i don't get my expected 8 clicks so the aiming circles shrink all the way. I tried turning off options such as ALLOW ALTERNATE AIMING (I have no idea what effect it gas anyway, some enlightenment would be welcome)and AIMING CLICKS DEPEND ON DISTANCE, for example. The aiming clicks still depend on the distance. Am i doing something wrong ? Is there a way to get full shrinkage and all of my aiming clicks according to scope,bipod,stance,etc-all the requirements ? If yes, please advice.

Next up is the matter of the attachments. In previous version of the AV mod , i was able to attach a scope, a reflex or red dot sight and a laser sight/rifle lam/lam-200. That's 3 attachments on the top row of the attachment slots on the weapon. Now i know that most modern rifles have attachment points for picatinny rails(which allow for extra attachments that don't normally come with the gun) and other attachment points as well. In the final version of the mod, it is not allowed to have a scope attached AND something in the middle slot. Why ? for the sake of realism ? What about the dot(.) key to alternate scope modes, meaning the attachments, scope or reflex sight for instance. It is a great option which becomes obsolete now. Let's say that a specific merc has a shot (line of sight is another issue but that is ok, there must be some realism even if it's a game,that's what makes it so likable) but he needs to change scope modes, no can do, so he changes attachments manually , wasting most of his action points and next round the target has moved out of view or range angry. Am i being wrong here or doing something wrong ? Please advice.

Last question : When i start the Ini Editor , i choose the mod i want to play (AV or AR, for example), the executable (ja2 exe or ja2_7609=AI_r396.exe) and finally the INI-File that contains options, i believe. This last part is what i wonder about. Do i have to select Ini-File every time according to the mod or do i just leave it at Data-1.13\JA2_Options.INI for all mods and only set these options ? The AV mod has it's own exe.

Any and all information/advice is welcome, i am still learning about these things and sometimes i get confused with the options, for some of them i cannott tell what kind of effect will they produce, should i change them, such as the one i mentioned above regarding alternate aiming levels.I do not mess with the Constants options though.

Sorry I'm late with a response -- life's been a bit hectic lately. You've got some good questions there, and after I get some sleep I'll try to answer them fully. For now I'll give a short response.

The JA2_Options.INI file you should use is the one associated with the mod you are playing. Since the Data-AV\JA2_Options.INI is very different from the Data-1.13\JA2_Options.INI there could be some not-intended game results.

The scope aiming clicks issue is most probably the result of the modifications to the scopes I have made in Items.XML. I have taken a different approach to scopes than vanilla 1.13 in an effort to balance their in-game power and give a more realistic feel. I am currently playing a campaign with an IMP sniper, and I have experienced what you have described. It could very well be that I need to tweak them a bit more to get it right. However, on the other hand, my sniper has generally been a monster on the battlefield -- with the best hit and kill ratio I think I've ever had. Though, he has had to switch to his sidearm whenever the ranges decrease to mid- and short-. In any case, someone said a mod is never finished, and never a truer statement was uttered.

To get the scopes to act as in vanilla you'd have to modify each scope in the AV Items.XML -- and AV around twice as many scopes as vanilla (I haven't counted). To get the best result in AV . . . sniper (marksman x2), prone, bipod, distance. The distance depends on the scope (<MinRangeForAimBonus> in Items.XML). a 10x in AV needs 70 tiles.

Using all 3 attachment points . . . is something I've wondered about myself. I've been following convention there, but have thought about changing it. I'm just not sure about the consequences so it'd be a bit of playtesting. Maybe somebody else can enlighten the both of us.

In Ja2+AI OCTH aiming levels always depend on distance and shock level, also it uses modified OCTH code with some balance changes and improvements. If you want vanilla 1.13 behavior it's better to use stock 1.13 ja2.exe.
In next version of Ja2+AI I will move distance and shock aiming levels code to DYNAMIC_AIMING_LIMITS part.

I can remove distance limits for aiming levels completely but it will probably make sniper rifles too powerful and unbalanced even with increased AP cost, also in real life spending much time aiming only makes sense for long range shooting because you need to take into account bullet drop, wind direction, air temperature and humidity etc, you don't need all that when shooting at 200m.

Greetings and thank you for making things clear happy Also, i thank you for the quick response, it is an eye-opener, no need to apologize, i posted my note just yesterday and got answers already !! I am grateful for the hard work and creativity of the modding teams, I've been playing JA2 since 1999, mostly vanilla and it is the one, longest playing game for me, lots and lots or replayability value, always something new to discover accidentally i've discovered The Bear's Pit and 1.13 about a year ago or so and it's been a blast !! Now i am trying to delve into other mods based on 1.13, such as AR and AV, i want to try SOG '69 as well but my first couple of attempts were unsuccessful, i'll get it right eventually.

My apologies for not mentioning that i prefer the OCTH system with the addition of the bar on top that shows possible CTH. NCTH is more about burst and auto fire, i am used to playing stealth games, such as the Thief, Splinter Cell and Deus Ex series, so my playing style is more about stealth,night ops and sniping. And thank you for including Sam Fisher's(Splinter Cell) weapons in your mods, the FN Five-Seven and the FN 2000 happy

Please don't make any major changes to the mod, it's awesome as it is, i am only curious concerning some of the changes in comparison with the 1.13 mod. I guess we can always try and test new things after all, why not. Line of sight is a bit demanding but this kind of added difficulty is kind of fun happy The ONLY thing that is really inconvenient is the inability to use the dot(.) key to change scope mods since we must switch between scope and red dot sight or reflex sight manually but i will still play the mod anyway happy


Keep up the good work and thank you for breathing new life into one of the best games ever made!!!!!

No, don't remove distance limits. As for aiming -- while you are correct, there has to be some concrete reason to use the lesser-powered scopes and other sights, just as in real life. A 10x scope in rl is useless at short range, and actually makes it harder to target something (and takes longer to find the target, especially if the target is moving). Also, the maps just aren't big enough to justify sniper rifles in the first place, so fitting them in and balancing them is a problem, regardless. I'm just trying to find a better way than vanilla using the tools I have.
