Maybe I misunderstand the modifier tag. I take this modifier below to mean +AP gives more AP on first turn after Airdrop AND enables the Merc to turn in a random direction . . . and the minus modifier means the Merc has less AP after Airdrop and won't turn.

<ap_airdrop>0</ap_airdrop> <!-- look after airdrop +-AP first turn, -10 to 10 -->

However, if I give a Merc a minus in this tag then the Merc will turn in a random direction after Airdrop.

So, do I misunderstand and the minus actually is the bonus, and makes the Airdrop AP less . . . or is it not working properly?

This is in r7609

At least in the current trunk, turning in a random direction does not work properly, it is probably best if I just remove that part.
If merc enter the battlefield by jumping out of a heli, two things happen:
  • jumping, landing, standing up and walking a bit takes a huge amount of APs
  • in the initial turn,I award them a HUGe malus on interrupt levels (-8).
The <ap_airdrop> bonus is directly added to that, as a way to counter the immediate AP loss. If <ap_airdrop> > 0, we do not get the -8 malus to interrupt levels.

Utterly unrelated, but as you are already here... I've been reading your blog, and really like what you've done there (haven't played it though, due to lack of time). The merc profiles are indeed somewhat inconsequential... mostly because nobody did a complete consistent review, and the current militia profiles aren't only stuffed with a few JA:F devs back from when we promoted that (which is, eh, not required anymore I guess).
Would it be okay for you if I merge your mercprofiles/backgrounds/militia profile changes into the current trunk?
A small concern, however: you changed a lot of buddy/hated/learn to like/hate settings, which have specific soundfiles. I would assume that would cause sounds to either not be used or used for the wrong mercs. Is that the case?

I know now that it could never work between us, as much as we wanted to, it could never be! Not because you're a rabbit, but because you're black.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

OK, I understand the airdrop situation now.

Yes, I'd be very happy to have my work incorporated into the trunk. Thank you! I am glad you like it.

The Backgrounds.xml works A-OK.
The Militia Profiles work A-OK.
The MercProfiles.xml still needs playtesting -- there's a LOT of mercs and a lot of new inter-relationships now. I did release a preview in hopes I'd get some feedback. In the testing I've done I noticed one glitch when Reuben quit the team because of Raven -- Raven's unhappy dialogue text balloon popped up as Reuben said his quit line. I assumed they both got triggered simultaneously. I haven't seen any other glitches, but I have only scratched the surface of the immense testing that tweak requires. I do imagine that some sound files will not get triggered now. While that is regrettable it, at least, is not noticeable during gameplay. As for the wrong soundfiles being triggered -- that needs a bit more testing before an answer can be given.

If you want to use the MercProfiles.xml even though it hasn't been fully tested -- I'm OK with that. It -is- easy enough to remove if it proves troublesome.

Edit: Oh, I did change the Backgrounds.xml since the v1.03 release of AV. The new one is available in the MercProfiles.xml preview download.

Flugente, let me know what you want from me, if anything, to incorporate those files.

I want to test the MercProfiles.xml a bit, to see whether there is an issue with speechfiles.
I began merging the Backgrounds.xml. For a lot of mercs, you awarded tiny resistance boni, and a spotter bonus of 3%. Any particular reason for that? It seemed random to me quite often.
Did you also alter the merc opinions? If I recall, a merc's basic opinion of others (so not accounting for dynamic opinions) is only dynamic for those he learns to like/hate, not for those he is already buddies with. So that file might benefit from your rework, if you haven't done so already.

Thank you for reminding me about the Merc Opinions -- I knew I was forgetting something! I will have to go through that file to match it up with MercProfiles.

Backgrounds -- The resistance & spotter boni: I did not want to unbalance the game so I started small with the intent of making the boni larger in v1.04 (also, to go through and fix any inconsistencies). Military types and other backgrounds used to danger got suppression boni and the spotter bonus to separate them from civilian types. I figured all military/bodyguard/gang backgrounds would be better at spotting than any civilian background.

Edit: There is no randomness involved -- I debated every modification in my mind before applying them. That said, it is always better to have someone else to discuss the pros and cons of every decision. I've been hoping for more Player feedback than I've gotten because I know I don't know every nuance to the game or the professions. Perhaps once these are incorporated into v1.13 there will be more feedback -- and then adjustments. "It is like our work is unfinished."
