Hey guys,

Windows 10 rolled out today and it seems like JA2 is not running on it.
I can start the game and i can hear the background music playing but my screen stays black.
To solve this i tried to run the .exe on XP SP3 compatibility and as an admin.
This brings back the screen but the game is stuttering very bad.

Any ideas?

Here's the description of "registry patch" which should 100% work with win 8x-10x unless you have some special problems with video drivers:

It's a new OS focused on new things. Give it a few months to grow some compatibility updates.
Or you could try running it with 16-bit graphics.

1.13: Install JA2, unpack latest, play.
AIMNAS: Complete 1.13 installation, Download ZIP and unpack, play.

I'd try those .dll's we use for Win8, it's probably just the same legacy calls missing that they dropped back then.

Yes the DLL's work. I have no issue with 7435 anymore, this was on the same computer I had loads of issues with win8.1.

Quote:
Ok, I think I bring good news towards Windows 10 with 7435 and update. I have played for a bit over 3 hours with no faults now.
I have talked to Miguel, Carlos, Ira, taken over the airport. Talked to several AIM members through the website.
I also loaded an old save from my windows 7 machine, and continued from there a bit, talking to NPC's and a few battles. No problems.

Here is how I got it running:

First I also got a black screen i fullscreen mode. Then I changed to windowed mode, and i changed the compability of ja2.exe:
Run in XP sp3 mode.
Reduced color 16 bit
Run as admin.

I also set win 98 compabitly mode to true in the INI editor. (Might not be needed).

Now I got in the game, but I kept getting "Assertion error" or something similar.
Then I added the three DLL files from the "win8 fix".
ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll and put them in my JA2 directory.

Now it runs perfectly, both in windowed mode and in fullscreen.

Did you have random lockups on 8.1?

I'm considering upgrading to win 10 and if JA2 works again on it without freezing randomly, that's a compelling reason. happy

Yes, I had lockups on my two win 8.1 computers. I have upgraded both now (A pad and a laptop). But I have only tested ja2 1.13 7435 on the laptop with win 10, and no problems.

I'm on win 10 and did the compatibility things and the .dll files and got it to run, but it crashes a lot, with the offical 2014 stable + patch. - Compatibility settings don't actually seem to be necessary, either, but turning them off hasn't gotten rid of the problems. It freezes often when the ingame laptop is open for a bit, but also when going from strategical to tactical map (black screen then crash) - and in tactical it crashes a lot too. basically not playable angry

I'll try re-installing, but have little hope. If you don't hear back from me it's probably because re-installing didn't work, or because I decided to continue doing homework instead big grin

However, as Win 10 isn't letting me play this game smoothly (gamebreaking frequent crashes despite win 8 fixes), I'll probably not get around to actually seeing him for quite a while.

Considering going back to Win 7 but I didn't bring my Win 7 install disk when I moved back to Canada, and many of the things that weren't working right away (sound, webcam, etc.) are working now, so JA2 alone is probably not going to be enough reason for me to get my hands on an install disc, etc.

But who knows, maybe the win 10 issues resolve themselves with JA2 as well, and then I'll have this dude! happy

Try registry fix, restore original DLLs, disable intro in ja2.ini.

Julix wrote on Sat, 12 December 2015 01:17
That's what I meant by win8 fixes. Intro needed to be disabled to even get into the game... I added .DLL files out of that folder, is that what you mean by "restore originals? -- I did the registry thing that's in the documents folder called "Windows Compatibility Fixes" - though I'm not consistently setting the affinity to only 1 CPU core. Didn't manage to get the shortcut to work.

No.
Revert your game installation to clean Ja2 (or stock 1.13 Ja2) without any patches.

Hey sevenfm - thanks for pointing that out! The doc folder included something like this already, but the Russian version pointed out that doubleslashes are necessary! I didn't know that and put in normal slashes when I reinstalled and tried to do everything right...

Currently most things are working most of the time, the skyrider screen is weird, but works. The laptop still freezes, so I try to be fast using it. The game has the forever clock when I autofire and load while there's still bullets in the air or some other times when there's the clockcursor before I load. I used to use Task-Manager to force-close the game, which was hard, because ALT-TABing out of the game didn't properly work, so I would have to use the tiny preview of ALT-TAB to see which program was selected to be closed. Found out while alt tabbing I can hover over the program's preview and click on the small x to close. -- So basically I got better at coping with the hang-ups... The clock thing I remember from before I had win10 as well. Ingame day 4, just took cambria (after alma, after drassen, after chizena) at about half of max progress, I'll try to be quick about finishing up. Maybe I'll reinstall and get it right for a UC playthrough...

Can't believe how long I've been playing JA2 for, and for how long you guys have been working on it too! Thanks to everyone still active happy

Julix you can also use Ctrl+Enter to stop clock or press Alt+X and then select No.
Sometimes pressing numpad '-' (highspeed timer) also helps with clock.

According to the description, NUMLOCK is used to skip strategic events, not tactical clock
Quote:

Yeah, I just got a new laptop that had Win10 on it. Ran through all the fixes in the docs folder and I got it to work in windowed mode but the window the game comes up in is low on the screen and cuts off the clock. I've tried adjusting the screen settings to fix it but to no avail. When I run it in fullscreen mode, it's laggy as hell. Any thoughts on a fix for either?

You can adjust the screen resolution in Ja2.ini to better fit your Windows screen resolution. As long as the window is smaller than the Windows screen you can move it around as you like and nothing will be cut off.

I have since then managed to get to the end once (with the modest Mike mentioned) - but many many crashes - early this year.

And a second replay attempt failed to me giving up due to too much drama with these errors.

I've since tried to install windows 7 in a virtual machine, but the emulation ate up way too much resources, so it wasn't worth it in the slightest. On top one of the two virtual machines I tried (either Oracle's VM or the one that comes with win 10 pro) didn't get the sound to work either.

I was now working on installing a dual-boot (i.e. second system on this computer) to solve it, but turns out my disk is a Win 7 64 bit, which is likely to have problems of its own, as 64 can't simulate 16 where 32 can, is that right? Any problems with Win 7 64 bit? (I used to have 32 bit when things were still working better, though to a point crashes have always been part of my JA2 experience... remember granades and other thrown objects often causing hookups for me in vanilla...)

Between windows XP and windows 7 32 bit, which do you think will be more stable?

Julian

I'm running in Win 7 64-bit. Didn't have to do anything to make the game run.

FWIW, the OS that I have used where JA2 was the most stable was 32-bit Linux (Xubuntu). XP was the second-most stable for me, and Win 7 64-bit just behind that.

It runs under WINE (Windows Emulation) in Linux just fine. Dunno about the Linux port, or even why they feel they have to do it when it runs fine under WINE.

I was running JA2 on Windows 7 x64 before and never had any problems except a crash here and there which was code related. Some of these crashes have been fixed in recent dev builds and Sevenfm's experimental project. Maybe you should try one of these. On Win 7 the only thing I had to change was to set the desktop to 16bit color if I wanted to run the game in windowed mode. On Win 10 this isn't needed anymore because it can run a program in 16 bit color despite the desktop being set to 32 bit.
On Win 10 I still have to figure out why the strategic map displays some weired colors when certain filters are selected.
