I've read that some mercenaries can become friends during the game, for example Danny and MD. I've played for a while with those two together, but so far they are not commenting on each others' successes and such, which happens with mercs who are friends by default. What exactly is it that causes these friendships to form? Is it just the mercs being on the same team/location for x number of hours? Do they need to see combat together?

I'm not sure. I thought it was something bound to happen between two mercs that were designed to hate/like each other. On my last playthrough I had Blood and Reaper in the same squad, and everytime Blood died Reaper commented on it saying something along the lines of

"Blood, you had the touch of darkness inside you. Could have let it out man. We could have been great together. Meet you on the other side"

I can't remember the exact quote. I found it odd that he said it because Reaper has the loner trait, and because of that I had been playing him in the loner style sniping from the bushes keeping his distance from the other team. Neither Blood or Reaper ever commented on each others kills or anything like that. I thought the guy that was supposed to get along well with Reaper was Shadow, not Blood. I don't know if Blood would have said anything about Reaper kicking the bucket because he never did cheeky

Looking at MercProfiles.xml, I noticed there are tags bLearnToLike and bLearnToLikeTime. For example, MD is set to like Danny with the time set to 14. The time being days seems like it would make most sense. There are also corresponding tags for learning to hate a specific person. Dimitri's time to learn to hate Stephen is 12. From my experience with those two, it sounds like the time means how many hours they need to be together.
