Hi everyone,
As a long time fan of jagged alliance 2, every now and then two friends and myself multiplay the game in coop mode.
Thanks to the alternative exe posted in another topic (ja2_7883.exe) we are now able to use the Alt+E command whenever the game gets stuck on interrupt, so we have actually been able to finish about 10 games in the recent days (hurray!)
The difficulty settings however, even on insane, are no match for 3 players with fully equipped mercs (2-4 per player, for a total of 6-12 mercs). Even with the 'max enemies in coop' setting, there are never more than (i think) 32 enemies on the map.
The experience of the enemies also depends on the location in Arulco, the queen's palace for example is filled with elite troops, but in the north of the map there are only redshirts.
I have been playing with the INI-editor and XML files in order to try to enable more enemies, with better loadouts (they carry the occiasional rifle, AR or rarely a mortar, but other than that they only have pistols), but to no avail.
Even with synchronized folders in multiplayer (set up according to the wiki instructions) doesn't seem to have any impact on the multiplayer games, so I'm starting to think that these settings only apply to SP campaigns?

Well, if there is any way to:
1) have more enemies in a coop battle
2) have more experienced enemies (captains, lieutenants, elites,...) in a coop battle
3) give the enemy better loadouts (high grade weapons with attachments, couple of mortars, ... )

I would be very happy for any help or advice as to whether this is possible and how to do it.

Also I've noticed that the MP sessions tend to crash when breaklights, tear- or mustardgas (grenades, mortars, ...) or thermobaric rockets are launched. We avoid using those now, so no big deal, just curious whether this flaw is known with the modders.

And finally, I've noticed that my favourite character - Tex Colburn - is missing from the M.E.R.C. website. Is there any way to add Tex to the available mercs again?

Thank you very much for any advice and thanks to all the modders for creating 1.13, multiplayer, and all the other cool mods and tweaks for this brilliant game.

Thanks for the feedback.
The 1.13 multiplayer is very limited
- Currently you can only have 32 maxium enemies at the same time on the map.
- If you want to have better enemies, you should play maps near Meduna (like you already pointed out)
- I didn't know about missing Tex. I will take a look at the bug
- Crashing on grenades/breaklights is known. It is best to avoid it

Sadly we don't have any coders for multiplayer beside me currently. I am also very limited in time...

Ok, well thanks anyway for the info, now I know I can stop playing with the xml and ini files since it won't make a difference for MP.
There must be some setting somewhere though, that defines the number of enemies and their loadout in MP games...
Just out of curiosity, what purpose do the synchronized server files serve if they have no influence on a MP game?

In any case, these are just things I'm wondering about with my (unexisting) programming skills. I fully understand you're limited in time so I'm not expecting anything from you, like I said I am already very happy with the possibilities of 1.13 (MP) as they are.

Greetings,
Bobbejan

The "MP Synchronized" should work if you follow the instructions. At least it worked when I tested long time ago...
The server can put the modified xml/ini files in the "MULTIPLAYER\Servers\MyServer" folder. Then when the client connects to the server it downloads all the files from the "MyServer" folder and initializes the client games with those files. So all the clients get initialized with the same xml/ini files from the server. You could also add new maps in the "MyServer" folder and the clients can also play those new maps...

Please read the step-by-step instructions from here and try it out one more time:

Thanks, I'm away for a couple of days but I will try it next week and let you know whether or not it worked

Hi Rowa (and everyone else),

I have been able to make some good progress in increasing the gameplay challenge in co-op missions.

The step-by-step guide I already read before, and applied all steps, but still that did not really make any difference (I had tried those steps before).

one of the steps reads:
2) Enter 'MULTIPLAYER/Servers/My Server' or the name of your mod folder (do not start with the GAMEDIR folder), without the quotes (''). If your path is nested,
seperate the folder names with a forwardslash /. Eg 'MULTIPLAYER/Servers/My Server'

however within the hosting screen I get no option to select the server folder (but that does not really matter since I think it is directed to the correct folder by default.

Anyway, here follow my steps to make the game more difficult:

1) Run the map editor (for me it worked with compatibility mode XP SP3 and run as Admin)
2) select the map of your choice. Best not to choose a coastal map or sea sector, since that will only cause crashes and glitches.
3) now you can select all of the enemy forces (or add/remove some) one by one and fiddle with the options.
Giving them better weapons, with attachments (select the checkbox 'laserscope' once you gave the soldier a gun), armoring them, increasing their stats, et cetera. You can also give them a new look, upgrade them to admins or elites, et cetera.
You can also select what kind of random loadout you want to give them, going from 'bad' to (I think) 'awesome', same goes for their skills. After playing some games, we found that the extra effort of giving each enemy skill points and custom weapons is worth it, since the enemy uses mostly pistols and has almost no armor even when you select an 'awesome' loadout.
Enemies with 85 Agility, Dex, Strength and marksmanship, armed with sniper rifles, shotguns, AK-47's and what not; protected by kevlar vests and pants and wearing a helmet really pose an awesome challenge for 12 mercs in co-op. Give some of them a LAW or mortar and the players are up for a real challenge.
4) If you want you can also adjust the terrain, add or remove buildings, place items on the map, ...
5) Saving your map: UNCHECK the box that would save the game in vanilla mode (right above the option menu); otherwise a lot of items will go lost and glitches will happen. You can also save the radar map (which makes the newly added/removed terrain setails and structures to the minimap in the map of Arulco and the MERC placement screen). The map will be saved in your PROFILES folder. Every player should have the map, so send it to each player. Since I wasn't really sure where I should store the map for it to have effect in MP; I store every modded map in 3 locations (which works for me): Data\maps; Data 1.13\maps and Profiles\UserProfile_JA2113\maps. Every player should do this.
6) now you can play your updated map in co-op; presenting a whole new challenge.

Keep in mind:
outfitting enemies with breaklights, tear gas or smoke grenades can cause crashes.
Outfitting enemies with RPG's (LAW's are allowed), mustard gas and some other heavy weapons will definitely cause the game to crash.
These warnings also apply to MERCS (especially annoying is the fact that smoke grenades cause crashes quite often, smoke is really a tactic advantage or cover method).

Finally, By opening the Merc Availability XML file and change each merc setting to
<StartMercsAvailable>1</StartMercsAvailable>
<NewMercsAvailable>1</NewMercsAvailable>

you will unlock Tex Colburn and many others again, hireable in MP games.

I will upload a couple of modded maps one of these days, made by a friend of mine.

Hope this helps for thos who are interested in MP COOP gaming.

Greetings!

Hi Bobbejan,
thanks for the feedback.

I just checked the source code and indeed there was a minor problem when syncing client directories. Now it seems to work fine.
