Scaling? Up-sizing? (Not sure what to call)[message #344954] Sat, 09 April 2016 08:03 Go to next message

So I've recently gotten back into Jagged Alliance, and I've been replaying the original and JA2 alongside eachother. One thing that's consistantly bugging me about JA2 with 1.13 though is... Well the elements of the game are so small.

Is there currently a way to scale up the game elements right now? Or is this something I need to actively request? I tend to need to tab out quickly and easily so I play in windowed mode, and while I can make the window larger it just shows more. I'd like to scale up the game so I can see better since my vision is a bit impaired and I kinda worry whenever I stress my remaining eye to pick out details.

Is this something I can work around or does someone need to add this? And is it even possible?

Not really, unfortunately the increase in resolutions make the game characters in particular smaller, at the end of the day JA's graphic still have the same amount of pixels in them like they did back in the 90's. This is the main reason I still play in relatively low resolutions, so it doesn't feel like I'm playing an ant farm simulator rather than JA.

One possibility is purchasing a larger monitor, but it's a bit like chasing your tail sometimes, and a pricey one at that.

There are various programs that can zoom the active area under your mouse too, including Microsoft Windows tools which you could use while playing the game in windowed mode, but that might be a stretch.

Yeah, I had tried using windows magnifier. That was... Thoroughly unpleasant to say the least. I'm thinking because of this and other windows 8 issues I might be better off just running it through a windows xp virtualbox and trying to scale that instead.

What monitor size are you using? I'm playing on a 26" monitor (1920x1200 native resolution) and when I switch the game to 1024x768 the UI elements are rather large. You shouldn't go below that because you will run into problems with the New Inventory System.
Also certain game resolutions might not work so well with your monitor. Try out different resolutions until you find the one that works best for you.

It's about a 17 inch screen. I'm on a laptop pretty much like I have been forever. I wouldn't mind playing at 1024x786 at all if it didn't feel so small on my screen, which is why I kinda wish I could scale it up from that resolution freeformish like I can with dosbox games in their resolutions.

One relatively good compromise would be to have some form of anti-aliasing in game.
What I do is to use 800x600 or 1024x768 full screen and force my GPU to apply very heavy anti-aliasing to the game, it makes it look crispy enough on big screens but I'm pretty sure a native solution would work better.

Devs, what do you think?

Here you go. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_scaling
Get someone write a better renderer and all of this can be done via shaders.

Most modern source ports do stuff like this.

If I recall, some russians posted code/an exe/whatever that used something like that to improve the game's graphics. I assume this has been forgotten since (can't find the thread though. Did I mention how hard it is to find anything in here? I should do that more often).

Saren threw his head back and screamed in impotent fury, before falling to his throne, head in his claws, trembling in horrified disbelief.

Then he heard a faint chime as Sovereign subscribed to her ECHO channel.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

I suspect it will be easier to just post the AMD/NVIDIA profiles, may not be perfect but it's better than nothing.

That tool is already in the SVN GameDir. It is located in the "Tools\ExShell" folder.
There is also a ReadMe file (read_me.txt) on how to install and run it. I just tested it long time ago and it worked.
