Hello.

I've played JA2 several years ago like a maniac. I love this game to death and being disappointed by the genres current games like XCOM/XCOM2 or the JA "remakes" that are just utter bullshit, i've decided to get back once more to the good old JA2, but this time with the addition of 1.13. I've played 1.13 a while back and i don't remember having that much trouble back then..

Currently i have tried for days to capture the drassen airport. My team consists of 8 self-created soldiers with what seems to me reasonable coices - i got a medic, a tech guy, a sniper and spotter team, two leaders and two riflers. Problem is, i always get my ass handed to me like it's nothing. I'm playing on second hardest difficulty (before insane, don't know what exactly it was called in english since my game is in german) because i think i know what i'm doing, but in the end it doesn't seem like it.

I really don't want to increase my money or make it "easier" through the INI files, but also i would like to survive the fricking first sectors :/ Biggest issue seems to be that my soldiers can't hit shit, enemies standing 4-5 cells away can't get hit in the torso of my guys with the initial SMG's - weirdly enough i thing one guy with pistols and Ira (yeah, i'm serious) are hitting the most shots.

Looking around these forums most "tutorial" links are not working anymore sadly, and that's why i've decided to open this thread, hoping there is some activity left and people around that are able to help me out. What i'm looking for would be the most reasonable settings that i should use for a game that is challenging and difficult but not a pain in the ass and barely possible to win since i'm streaming my playthrough and it pretty much suck so re-load every 5 minutes..

Thanks!

Don't use NCTH.
Also suppression is important thing in 1.13 - if your soldiers have high shock from suppression, they will miss much more.

You could play at an easier level. I play midway between novice and the next level up (thanks to tweaking the difficulty settings). With NCTH it is VERY frustrating to have 2 guys a few tiles apart and missing with every shot. It does get better eventually. There is a bit of a learning curve from vanilla JA2.

Burst or auto fire can be helpful...aim at legs and the bullets should rise up and enough should hit to get a result.

Once you get used to the mechanics it can be easier. I did have a recent game where a merc used a lot of hand-to-hand fighting and even item stealing, something I had never done before. These experiences allowed me to up the difficulty level a bit (but I'm still fairly hopeless at the game unless I have an advantage). I use NCTH and I'm now used to it.

If you have rifles (against handgun armed opponents) then try flanking, hitting them from the front and the sides. Also, aim for their legs. A hit may drop them and make it easier to hit them with subsequent shots.

One other thing, if a target is running a lot, it's MUCH harder to hit them. Wait till they stop running...don't waste shots on those guys.

Finally, treat your first game as a learning game...discover what works and what doesn't, then put that knowledge into a proper game.

Thanks for the tips guys. Is there a way to change the hit mode after i've started a game? Or would i have to start a new game to turn off the NCTH`? Because i really don't want to put in another hour creating my initial own soldiers again..

You cannot change CTH system without restarting the game.
You can always reuse your created IMPs by typing their names instead of IMP code.
It's possible to finetune NCTH with custom ini settings also.

The soldiers you've created are stored and can be reused.

At the IMP selection, don't use XEP624, use the merc name "Boris" or whatever and he'll be instantly loaded...repeat for the other IMP mercs.

Not sure if you can change the NCTH setting mid game but you can try it (via some ini file) and see if it works, just don't overwrite the last savegame

Im not really knowledgeable of the technical aspect of the 1.13's CTH/NCTH system but i always play mine with NCTH enable.

1. In most of my games, i learned that methods of sighting/targeting (i dont know the actual technical term for that)- eg: scope, iron sight/reflex sight, hip fire can make some differences.
So try swapping between them and see if it improves your accuracy. i think scopes have penalties at close range so i switched to iron sight/reflex sight when that becomes an issue.

2. reflex sight can reduce your AP use for "ready position" so you can use the extra APs to improve the level of your imps aiming (im not sure if it is substantial though).

3. as far as i understand the ncth stats chart, depending on your stance/position and your weapons attachment you can improve or ruin your imps ability to aim and their weapon stability.

- bipod is only good when used in prone position, anything else and it will give some penalty.
- foregrip is better when use while standing/squating position. Gives some penalty when used in prone position (AFAIK)
- grippod offers bonus on all positions but they are a bit less compare to a dedicated foregrip and/or bipod.
- c-mag, i think, increases the stability of your weapon substantially
- trigger group can help your IMPs control their automatic weapons. also helps conserve ammo
- IMO using sidearms (pistols) at close range is better and preferable than using your long weapons, so try switching/swapping your weapons if you think it will create some advantage. (if you have enough man-power just have a dedicated close-range engager armed with pistols/shotgun/SMG)

4. enemy in motion (in the act of running) are harder to hit... so suppressing and pinning them down can improve your chances to hit.

5. i think eye wears (sunglasses, NVG) can improve your IMPs aim (yeap in know its trivial).

6. use your grenades if you are about to be overrun (very effective against enemies who love to clump together). saves me a lot of time

7. always secure some escape route and know where the enemies will be coming from.

8. If anything else fails, camp inside a windowless building away from the door, arm you mercs with a silenced pistols all of them pointing at the door. (note that these cheesy tactic may probably not work on the later unstable builds where the enemies can deploy tanks, grenades, heavy weapons and even fire bullets through the wall)

It can also helps having a squadleader/deputy merc in the middle of your team to boost your merc stats. If you have binoculars, you can also designate a merc to be a spotter (from alt+right click menu) to further boost your CTH.

Sidearms are especially important if you have a main weapon with a scope that blocks the iron sights. In that case you only have the scope mode which is penalized at close range. So better switch to a sidearm instead of trying to hit with a big scope penalty.

I'm playing on second hardest difficulty (before insane, don't know what exactly it was called in english since my game is in german) because i think i know what i'm doing, but in the end it doesn't seem like it.

This right here is the reason. The second hardest difficulty is called Expert, and it's ridiculously hard. You really need to be an expert and maybe save scumming hard to have a chance at that. With NCTH, this is even more true.

EDIT:I just realized I necro'd this thread hard. Didn't look at the date. fml.
