A rather small idea, but ideas don't have to be big, so...

Anyway, at the moment the extended ear item has several uses:
  • it increases the wearer's hearing range
  • it increases the range of a squadleader's effects on teammates (both SL and teammate are required to wear this)
  • it allows giving orders to all militia, even if we do not see the militia we are giving the order to

Somewhat related are the things a radio set can do:
  • Requirement for a radio operator to use his skills (artillery, reinforcements, eavesdrop etc.)
  • it allows giving orders to all militia, even if we do not see the militia we are giving the order to (same as extended ear)
  • it allows giving orders to specific militia, even if we do not see the militia we are giving the order to

For obvious, non-debatable reasons, the radio operator skills are and will be tied to a radio set. What interests me is the 'give order to militia' part.

At the moment, during any time of day, there are 3 choices to be made for your 2 face item slots:
  • gasmask to protect against tear and mustard gas
  • sunglasses/NVG to increase vision range (and protect against flashbangs with sunglasses, not that those are ever a serious threat)
  • extended ear for increased hearing range, easier SL boni and ordering militia around.
This makes choosing relatively simple - if you don't suspect gas attacks (like if you are a long range away), equip extended ear & sunglasses/NVG. Otherwise, equip gasmasj & sunglasses/NVG. Sunglasses are also useless most of the time, as their bonus is small and they only work at certain hours.

What I'd like to do (assuming there is no significant opposition) is to split the extended ear in two:
  • extended ear still awards hearing bonus and is used for teammates hoping to get the boni from the SL.
  • another item (some sort of microphone?) is used to boost a SL's boni range (similar to as it is now). Additionally, with this equipped we can order militia we don't see. We also allow addressing single militia, which was on the radios set before.
As a result, the extended ear is almost as useful as before. SLs would benefit highly from the microphone, and if you fight alongside militia, equipping this on a few extra mercs is beneficial. I hope that this would make face item selection at least a bit more diverse.

I am aware that there are likely real-life items that combine both into one, but 1. playability > realism 2. this is supposed to be a bombed out third-world country where the newest stuff might not be present, dammit.

Saren threw his head back and screamed in impotent fury, before falling to his throne, head in his claws, trembling in horrified disbelief.

Then he heard a faint chime as Sovereign subscribed to her ECHO channel.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

I'm all for making two types of extended ear -- one without a microphone and one with a microphone. But entirely separating the two so you have to wear two face items is too much. Especially since tactical ear-microphone sets are extremely cheap and readily available even to civilian populations.

You could also make different quality ear & ear-microphone sets -- longer range as quality goes up.

Hello:

Using these terms to express the division:
"Receiver"
"Transceiver"
"Radio"

I would suggest:
"Transceiver" would only be allowed to address single militia IF the militia has a "Receiver" equipped...
"Radio", however, would be allowed to address single militia WITHOUT a "Receiver" equipped...

Thank you for all your programming efforts,
BA

Actually an extended ear should only grant a hearing range bonus. This includes a bonus to hearing our squad leader. No communication option with unseen militia.
For communication we'd need a headset item which provides communication ability in the current sector. This would help with communication between squad members/leader and unseen militia but wouldn't provide a hearing bonus.
For long range communication we'd still need the radio set.

I guess that would be ok, I like to order militia to crouch or get down or come to me and I always take along a Radio Operator...

I guess we first have to decide what it is we're talking about as the "extended ear" and it's in-game capabilities are not congruous. An "extended ear" allows only greater hearing, but in-game it has two-way communication abilities. So . . . it makes sense to split the capabilities into separate items. After more thought, I think it should be left as it is... I am happy with the way it works now and see little need to learn a new system that may or may not be an improvement to game play...

Thanks,
BA

Seems to me like the best way to deal with these things, would be a sort of New Attachment System extension for things other than guns. Not sure if possible, but could be useful in future additions.

Can we have both?
- an early game microphone
- an early game extended ear
- a late game extended ear that works as the current extender with a coolness 9-10

If not possible i agree with silversurfer, extended ear should only give hearing bonus, and i like the idea of throwing off realism for balance's sake.
