Would it be possible to give trees (those that look big enough to support a person) an invisible tile of 1st floor to climb on? Since there are no hills in JA2 and everything is perfectly flat, I think it would add something to this game to have the option to climb on trees. Imagine snipers sitting in a tree happy

That would be a map issue. In the map editor, one would simply place a roof tile on a tree. I think there was also a way to make those invisible, I recall doing that in one of the last conventions. Could be smeagol is already using this in AIMNAS bigmaps, not sure.

Note that while a tree might look thick and like a good hiding spot, it isn't on the roof level. It's essentially the same as climbing a 1x1 house, you'll be visible from afar.

Okay, that doesn't sound too complicated. Could it be done in the editor so that all trees being placed automatically include the roof tile? I mean from my end.

Regarding visibility, does this mean that trees are only 1 level high?

I am all but certain that there are no structures that include both ground and roof level (stuff on top of buildings are separate structures). So yes, trees are only 1 level high. There is no way from your end to automatically give trees a roof tile. That requires code changes. Which are rather nasty, because from code alone, we don't know what is a tree and what isn't - we'd require some additional input (xml-wise or so).
