Hi guys!

I have been thinking about this a little bit, and I think I have found a solution to my main issue with this game: Being rushed all the time. I don't mean rushed as in zerg rush. I mean the game puts you under a lot of pressure to conquer 80% of the map really early on just to unlock basic features. You have to go all the way to Balime to reliably get a car, which is impossible to reach without taking out the central SAM. If you want to use Estoni, you also have to conquer the NW SAM. Boom, you have most of the cities conquered just to get decent use out of your heli and your car.

Long story short:
- Dave has the Hummer, which can go off-road and he can give you fuel. Thus in addition to providing you with mobility and logistics support, you get additional bonuses.
- Jacke gives you fuel once you free Tixa, awesome
- there are no other places to buy fuel, because it is rationed in the country, so if you want to use your vehicle, you have to conquer and hold estoni or balime, which both are quite close to Meduna.

My solution:
- make an early vehicle reliable available early on in the game.
- make fuel available on BR's (obviously this would be expensive, but usually money is not really an issue)

One way to solve this would be to relocate Hamous to be somewhere fixed or at least along the road between Omerta, Cambria and Drassen.
Another way would be to add another car. Maybe one of the wrecks that we already have as static sector inventory could be used or maybe there's already a car from another mod. This should be a basic vehicle without off-road capability. Unless vehicles are hardcoded to have 6 seats, this one could have only 4.

I feel this would allow you to play in and around Drassen without feeling an unnecessary rush to make it down to Balime / Estoni.

WF 6.07 maps have a jeep parked in Omerta. It can only use roads but it's better than nothing. Fuel hasn't really been a problem on these maps as one can usually find a canister in one sector or another.

I had a similiar thought to you long ago but I decided that being able to move around the map so rapidly so early in the game might unbalance it a little bit, so I split the difference. I changed an .ini file somewhere (can't remember which one) so that Hamous was always in the same sector (just south of Drassen) but I did nothing to solve the fuel problem. This left me scavenging for fuel, which makes sense in a country like Alruco, but also didn't make it feel like I was stacking the deck too much in my own favour. After all, there are vehicles all over Alrcuo but no one drives them because they can't get fuel. It also forced me to stick to the roads (Ice cream truck can't go offroad) so I still had to clear out the check points at the corssroads areas everywhere I went, and sometimes clear them out a few times as the Queen sent replacement troops.

So we could use that Jeep in 1.13 then, that would be easy. Getting fuel is more on an issue on the standard 1.13 map, as you only occasionally find fuel (I found 1 canister in all of Arulco in one playthrough). There's no reason for BR's not to sell it counter the fact that people in Arulco would start importing fuel from across the border the SECOND the regime is displaced my our marxist mercs. It would be expensive, because those jerrycans are really heavy and who doesn't use next day delivery on every single order anyways devil

Giving hamous a fixed location would also work nicely, but a third vehicle would be cooler, of course.

I disagree with you, BattleGnome, because having a vehicle early on doesn't make you "stronger" in any way, so I don't see it affecting balance. It does help with logistics and that is great.

An interesting feature smeag added to his mods is the ability to collect the explosive barrels (via the fortification system) and turn those into gas cans.

I suppose you could make the argument that Skyrider must be getting fuel for the helicopter from somehwere, so why couldn't our mercs piggypack on whatever he is doing to get their own fuel for vehicles? Not to mention the mining operations must be using fuel, too. Also, Pablo no doubt would know how to get fuel (for a price)... perhaps it would be possible to have Pablo as a merchant who will sell fuel (at inflated prices, naturally). He could also offer things he "aquires" (steals) for sale, too. Waldo (the mechanic at Drassen airport) would also come across fuel from time to time and might be willing to part with some of it.

I guess there are several plausible ways for our mercs to be getting fuel without upsetting the lore.

I can't find where it is now. Does someone know or remember?

Check Scripts/StrategicEventHandler.lua.

So, following this idea, i changed the script randomizing where Hamous appears and made him always appear at D9. For those interested, here it is (in Scripts/StrategicEventHandler.lua as Flugente indicated). Don't try to put him in a random sector, you will be notified he's there but won't appear in tactical. I guess his location must be set in the map editor or something like that.

	if ( CheckNPCLife(Profil.HAMOUS) > 0 and CheckMercIsDead (Profil.HAMOUS) == false and CheckMercIsDead (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM) == false and (not ( (gWorldSectorX == HAMOUSx) and (gWorldSectorY == HAMOUSy) and (gWorldSectorZ == 0) )) ) then

		-- Ok, HAMOUS's sector not loaded, so time to move!
		-- Might be same sector as before, if so, oh well!
		--i = math.random(1, 5)
		--if i == 1 then
			-- G6
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.HAMOUS,6,7,0)
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM,6,7,0)
		--elseif i == 2 then
			-- F12
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.HAMOUS,12,6,0)
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM,12,6,0)
		--elseif i == 3 then
			-- D7
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.HAMOUS,7,4,0)
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM,7,4,0)
		--elseif i == 4 then

		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.HAMOUS,3,4,0)
		--	AddNPCtoSector (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM,3,4,0)
		--elseif i == 5 then
			-- D9
			AddNPCtoSector (Profil.HAMOUS,9,4,0)
			AddNPCtoSector (Profil.PROF_ICECREAM,9,4,0)
		--end
	end

Thanks Grim, that was probably the easiest fix possible. Although without a source of fuel, it is a very short lived joy, isn't it?

I've not played this session enough to say. But i've already found gas on the way to Drassen. If i use the truck only for emergencies or for important travels i think it will last long enough to find more gas.

Eh. If you really want fuel, note that you can find at least 2 cans of fuel in Drassen and adjacent sectors (stock maps).

What would it take to put gas on BR's list?

You'd need to assign a proper description and coolness value to the gas can in Items.xml.

BR compiles his inventory based on the BRNew/UsedInventory tags, not from a list like the other merchants.
