Greetings everyone! I am brand new to these forums, having recently installed 1.13 after not having touched JA2 in years. I am enjoying it greatly, but seem to be having problems understanding the NCTH (though I really like it, in principle).

After plowing through Drassen and getting to Cambria, I found a nice shiny AK-74 sitting in a building. "Sweet!" I thought, and promptly gave the rifle to my best merc, Stephen. To my dismay, he can't hit the broad side of a barn with it!

I must have gone through 2 whole magazines, using single shots, before getting a *single* hit! The rifle is seemingly more innaccurate than the pistols, MPs, and SMGs I'd been using to date. I simply can't understand why a weapon with almost twice the range and ~4x the accuracy of my earlier weapons refuses to land a hit; I had thought it'd connect like a laser beam in comparison. I thought I had the basics of NCTH after the 20 or so hours played so far, (using APs to aim, going prone or crouching, actually paying attention to put the aiming circle where I want the round to go), but now I'm having to check myself, and decided to come here for advice.

I am running Build 7609 downloaded from ja2v113.pbworks.com (I only realized there are newer builds available 10 mins ago, after looking at these forums).

For reference, here are weapon's and Stephen's stats at time of using:

Stephen
Agi 71
Dex 79
Str 80
Wis 94
Lvl 6
Mrk 84

AK-74
Acc 63
Range 33
Aim Levels 5
Handling 15
Using Iron Sights, AP Ammo, and in Perfect Condition

Is a newer build the answer? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is the weapon working as intended, and I just need attachments or better skills? Help!

I personally prefer SDO mod for NCTH as it was balanced for this system, for example it uses better balanced handling values for weapons.
Also by default NCTH uses settings that work very different from OCTH - it's not only marksmanship that is important for shooting but experience and other stats, so I prefer to change CTHConstans.ini too.

Crouching or going prone doesn't matter much in NCTH except it will flatten the aperture which is unrealistic and looks bad.
It doesn't matter where you put the aiming circle - it works the same as in OCTH - you aim at head/torso/legs.

There are changes in NCTH system in new unstable builds, but the problem is not in the build but in mod balance and settings.

The range to your target is important. At some point, the optics become mandatory (and life changing).
The AK isn't much better than a handgun at close range without attachments. At medium range it will be able to hit but without a scope the aperture will be wide. Even a 2x scope will practically halve the aperture size.

Actually stance matters a lot because weapons, attachments and armor provide stance based bonuses/penalties. Also the shooter would want to mount his weapon onto something which usually only works while crouched or prone.
Stance also has an impact on handling for the shooter himself.

Yes, using bipod helps when shooting prone or mounted, but my experience with NCTH in SDO says that without bipods there is nearly no difference in aperture when shooting in different stance if VERTICAL_BIAS is set to 1.0

After mounting some scopes, I am getting tighter aiming circles, and having better results with ARs. Thank you all for your input!
