As the title says, how do you deal with forested maps in JA2?

I've been trying to do a non-savescum run of the game on experienced, and I just continue to get pasted whenever there are any sort of trees between me and the opponent. When I can see them, they tend to be saved by the trees without them having a sweat, and (confirmation bias?) they can avoid the trees my mercs are hiding behind to hit them regardless of cover.

A bigger problem is my mercs being unable to see them, whereas they're freely shooting big bursts from beyond sight range, in uncanny accuracy of course.

It has really scratching my head, and since i'm using NCTH it really only compounds the difficulty of dealing with forested areas because they just become frustrating hellholes where even having a numerical advantage doesn't help me much. (8 vs. 4, it's a pyrrhic victory).

What are the more experienced JA2 players doing to thrive when there aren't any corners to hide behind?

Hi there Deknegt, here are a few tips that you probably know already, i'll tell you my thoughts anyway...

1) Hit the T key to toggle the treetops on and off. It helps if you know where the enemy is holed up exactly so you can plan your next moves.
2) the End and Delete keys are showing you best cover spots and line of sight information. That way you can plan where to move for better cover and for better line of sight according to the latest enemy sightings.
3) Use smoke grenades and move around in prone position as much as possible, avoid crouching/standing when you think it's unwise to show more of yourself. If you are out of smoke grenades, substitute with mustard gas grenades for cover, make sure to equip gas mask if you are going through the gas. While using smoke or gas for cover have some mercs crawl away and circle/flank the enemies.
4) Make sure that every squad carries at least a grenade launcher and/or a light mortar, use them to push enemies out of cover by shooting near their hiding spots, making them easier targets. Personally,i give all my mercs a SCAR H SV with underbarrel grenade launcher and they carry 40mm Stun Grenades, they work wonders. Later on you can swap them for Thermobaric grenades.
5) Use the skills on your mercs, Machingunners/Auto Weapons specialists can lay down-accurate enough-fire so your other mercs can find better cover or try to flank along with the smoke/gas cover. Make sure that every squad has at least one Sniper and one Marksman, They can get interrupts at longer range than the rest.
6) Use ghillie suits and camouflage kits to make it harder to be spotted, use a Stealthy merc as pointman during the day, a Night Ops merc as a pointman during night expeditions. And finally try to pick your fights at night whenever possible.

NCTH is more about Burst/Auto fire, you need to get close to make use of that. OCTH is more accurate with single shots at longer range. The choice is yours , you decide what you like and how to play your game. I am an old school player, a lot of vanilla JA2 big grin, so i prefer OCTH . Some of the methods i described above can be used best when you have access to better equipment (guns, cold ammo, silencers, camo and night ops) can really help at the early stages of the game. Do not be afraid to try new methods, however crazy they look like. That's what the Quicksave/Quickload are for, unless you play Ironman mode. I hope it helps, please let me know happy

Thanks for all the tips, most of them make sense and a bunch of them I already knew. I was just a bit frustrated with early game, especially since I was playing AFS with diabolical .22 plinky guns. Now that i've gotten a bit further it's all a bit easier because i've been able to kit out my team decently enough. big grin

Thank you for replying, yes, having even halfway decent gear can make a big difference. What is AFS ?

From my personal experience, it helps to remember what our sergeant told us during conscription: "The edges of forests are smeared in shit."
This is true in JA2 insofar as that you are at a disadvantage if your team is in the open and attacking enemy forces that are between trees. Issues are cover from trees, sightline issues and bullets hitting trees. Most of the time, I try to move my mercs so that this does not happen. For example, with stock data, most firefights will be at a range <= 30 (the default range of most assault rifles). Thus make sure that the enemy cannot remain in the trees below that range. Especially if your team is clustered so tight that they everyone's bullets might hit the same tree.
A soldier prone directly behind a tree will have no issues with his bullets, but be surprisingly protected, and with enough foliage and camo, be hard to spot from the other side of the tree.
Possible counters in that case would be flanking, gas grenades (either hide your team or smoke the enemy trees, which can get hard due to the grenades being stopped by the trees too) or explosives. In extreme cases (thick forest with enemy sniper in position behind) GLs and RPGs might not be viable anymore, at that point mortars and artillery are kinda the last resort.
Also note that you can still hit something even if you don't see it. It's possible for your snipers to hit a target behind a tree they cannot currently see (aim manually then), though the cth penalty will be high and piercing the tree will reduce damage a lot.

I know now that it could never work between us, as much as we wanted to, it could never be! Not because you're a rabbit, but because you're black.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.
