Looks like you're either missing the data\amient.slf file or the game can't access it for some reason. Maybe you forgot to also update game data files?

well, since i updated via SVN everthing should be up to date and should have all necesary files.

and when playing with settings it looks more like it fail to initialize virtual file system, how to make it working ?

another update, i managed to start JA2 up to that it start to white windowed screen (finaly overcomed problem with that problem when starting JA2.exe error "it need to run in 16 bit mode" by finding you can set it compability mode to 16 bit palete), since i cant set my W10 to 16 bit , it can run only at 32 bit.

data\ambient.slf should be in your own game files, if it is missing that there's something wrong with your original ja2 install

also for running on Win10 apply the patches in the Docs folder, there's some reg files there as well that you need to edit and load into registry for windowed and full screen 16-bit playing

I don't know about your error, I had an error similar to yours and had to reinstall game and updates, lost all my saves. So far so good. I do use daemon tools to mount images, have used it for years.

Czert, those are files that come with v1.13, you also need to have the Ambient.SLF file in the Data folder itself, that's the one that comes with JA2 and that seems to be missing according to that error.
You cannot play v1.13 without the original game data

On the ISO side, you can also just get 7-Zip and extract the iso data, then install from that.
After you've installed just copy the folder you installed the game to as a backup, you will never have to install the game again for v1.13, just use a copy of that backup folder as a base for any new v1.13 install

yes, i figured out that i have some files from original game missing, but have no idea why. IIRC before windows update, i did played ja2 before on this tablet without problems.

edit, hmmm, did install of ja 2 gold to new directory, only to find it have no ambient folder under data, only ambient.slf file, which most likely it did have my play version before, since im stuck with same problem as before. game just displaying white screen without running.
well to be precisee, sound are running, but all i see is blank black or white screen.

and yes, i did everthing writen in W10 fix, well except seting game to run on 1 core, but IIRc before i didnt have to do this to play this game before.

yes, checked it, even installed 2010 and still didnt helped, black/white screen.

And im sure i was able to play game on this tablet before, so latest w10 update must screwed it somehow. Do you think it will make difference registering to microsoft site and writing about problem, or it is just waste of time.

jup it is 1703, and it fails to run, no idea why. I double checked that registry fix for correct directory, but from what i understod that code, it just set copmability seting for ja2.exe
and it realy confuses my why it refuses to run.

few key points,
  • dont install in program files, use c:\games for example
  • install visual c++ 2005 redistributable (x86 version)
  • apply win10 patches, so copy DLL files to game root and edit and load registry files
  • dont set any compatibility stuff on the exe itself
  • get the newest graphics drivers
  • after starting cut down executable to use only one cpu core so sound stays normal
if anyone else knows something I forgot please say so but this is all I can think of

i never instal any gams under program files, except program itself, and when any game / program do have any troubles, first thing is set them to run at admin mode
yes, i do have VC2005 instaled on tablet, even VC2010.
yes, i did apply w10 patches, booth dlls and registry fix (and double checked for correct directory)
for graphic dricers, well since i use on-cpu gp (have intel atom X5 cpu for tablets), there is nothing much to do.
tried to run game under one core, under task manager, but failed to set it, and i dont need to fix sounds (they play), i need to fix visuals (screen).

if it will be any help, i have umax visionbook 10Wi pro

Did you get the newest version SCI from Depri's OneDrive?

A failure to read Disease.xml implies either that the xml, located in Data-1.13/Tabledata/, isn't there, that it was badly modified or that the exe does not fit the data structure, all which points to a non-proper installatino of 1.13.

Well that's understandable since that feature was probably not yet implemented in that version...
Are you perhaps trying to use the latest executable with old game data.. that would cause very weird issues like this.. and since you said you got 3 executables and a text file I think you did just that!
I think it all boils down to this.. if you dont know what you are doing always get the SCI!

So you're stuck with a black window somehow, at what point does it appear? Do you first see the sirtech logo or is the window empty from the start? Also, you mentioned hearing music, so I'm guessing the game is getting to the menu somehow but not displaying anything. Do you hear the logo-intro playing first? Anyhow, once you hear the menu music, try pressing q with the window focused, if that closes the game it means it is running and we're dealing with a display issue. You can also try hitting n and then enter to try starting a new game, you should either hear the proper intro or the laptop music. Let me know what happens.

black/white screen show from begining, after i start at game, no logo shown, nothing. i can only hear music (and mouseclicks).
i disabled playing of intro, as it was recomended in solving problem with lauch of game.
jup, pressing q quited game, after some short delay.

Have you tried running the game through exshell? It's included in the tools folder. You'll need to edit its config file, line 17 for game exe path and around lines 70 and 80 the game resolution and your screen resolution.

I mean the thingy that's now in the SVN gamedir: https://ja2svn.mooo.com/source/ja2_v1.13_data/GameDir/Tools/ExShell/

Also, maybe try the alternate dll fix: http://thepit.ja-galaxy-forum.com/index.php?t=msg&th=23364&goto=349611&#msg_349611
There's also talk of using DxWnd in that thread, maybe try that.

Let me know if any of these help in any way, or seem to do anything at all for your problem.
