So okay.

The problem I'm having: The inventory system. I can't for the life of me figure out what the icons mean so far as what can go where, and I can't figure out what goes with what so far as LBE/backpack/modular things.

I'm using unmodded 1.13, for the record, with tons of guns turned on, BR quantity and quality at 2x.

I'm trying to develop a standard "basic loadout" that all mercs/RPCs get (via cheats or BR) at start of game or thereabouts, that I can then modify to fit various roles...To do that, I need help figuring out the inventory system.

Anyone willing to walk me through this?

The way I worked all this out when I first started playing 1.13 was I edited the starting gear for a whole bunch of different AIM mercs (and then hired them all) so that collectively they had all the LBE and backpacks that are available (sometimes more than one of each item) and then just played around with it all. I experimented with which items best suited each battlefield roll I wanted to fill and noted it all down with pen and paper as I went. It took an hour or two but by the end of it I understood it all so well I've never had any problems since, in fact I even went and added some of my own custom LBE gear to the game just for fun. I would also suggest you make sure to have a good variety of general items, weapons, ammo, explosives, etc, so you can actually check how much of each type of item a pouch / pocket can hold, and again, note it all down as you go.

Just make sure you still have weapons in the starting gear for your mercs so you can fight off the first patrol in Drassen. Or just be prepared to make a run for the sector boundary and move into the next sector of Drassen to avoid the firefight. Also, take a note of the original starting gear before you mess around with it so that you can put it all back the way it was when you are done.

BattleGnome: The thing is, there are now so many different items just to carry stuff with that I'm kind of lost.

I'm not asking about guns and ammo and actual "gear used in combat" (or even out of combat); I know I need to figure those out on my own. I'm asking about the MOLLE systems and the backpacks and stuff.

There are so many options I can't even figure them all out from Items.xml, and my brain just kind of freezes. I love the new inventory system, wouldn't go back to JA2's vanilla system for the world, but there comes a point where something this complex needs user documentation.

First of all - you don't need to use the MOLLE system. There are tons of LBE items that suit different soldier roles. MOLLE was added to give players an option to create different LBE setups.

If you want to use the MOLLE system you need to know that there are carrier items and pouches. Pouches get attached to the carrier. The carrier gets worn by the soldier. Carriers come as vests or leg rigs. Each carrier only has room for a certain number and volume of pouches. For example if the carrier has 3 slots for pouches and allows a total volume of 16 you can attach two 7 volume pouches but not three because that would exceed the total volume of the carrier. Using the MOLLE system requires some experiments. The better MOLLE items only come at higher game progress.

If you want to use cheats to try different combinations you can spawn any item in the game in cheat mode (CTRL + G) by using ALT + . and then entering the item ID in the box that comes up.

I also had trouble working it out from the .xml files which is why I went the in game route. As for documentation, I'm prepared to be wrong about this, but I don't think there is any, and if there is it's likely to be quite out of date.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone will have a silver bullet for you on this topic. I expect you will end up going down the same road I did and working it out in game, in which case using the cheat mode and item spawning described above should greatly speed up this process. (I wish I'd been aware of this option)

I know this far from a perfect solution but it may be one of the better solutions.

Yeah, I'm slowly going that route. It'd be quicker if Win 8.1 would let me do JA2 in Windowed mode (I can't really switch color depth on my current monitor without doing full-screen), or if Full Screen would let me alt-tab away from it.

You can run JA2 in windowed mode but you need to set some compatibility options.

- copy below code into a new text file and call it JA2.reg.
- modify the path "E:\\JA2" in the code to suit your JA2 installation folder. You may not need some of the lines like the "JA2_EN_Debug.exe" for example so you can remove them.
- run this reg file so the settings are imported into the Windows registry.
- set JA2 to windowed mode in JA2.ini
- start the game

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
"E:\\JA2\\JA2.exe"="~ DWM8And16BitMitigation 16BITCOLOR Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation 8And16BitAggregateBlts"
"E:\\JA2\\MapEditor.exe"="~ DWM8And16BitMitigation 16BITCOLOR Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation 8And16BitAggregateBlts"
"E:\\JA2\\JA2_EN_Debug.exe"="~ DWM8And16BitMitigation 16BITCOLOR Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation 8And16BitAggregateBlts"
"E:\\JA2\\JA2_EN_Release.exe"="~ DWM8And16BitMitigation 16BITCOLOR Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation 8And16BitAggregateBlts"

Weird result when I try that. JA2.exe runs in a window, but all there is is a white screen in that window.

Hello there, stop kicking yourself, you are not stupid, it's just that JA2 has come such a long way with the wonderful 1.13 , so it takes time to get familiar with the many new features. What i am about to say, assumes that you are using the stable version of 1.13 from 2014. 7435 and the 7609 Update.

The LBE's are great, some are worn on the soldier and some are getting attached on what the soldier wears. Let me give you examples : the black MOLLE vest is the best when it comes to getting attachments.it takes 2 utility pockets, the largest ones and a variety of smaller ones. Also do not underestimate the carabiners. They can carry different items such as canteens or bottles, knife sheathe, gun attachments, etc. Mouse over on equipped MOLLE's or thigh rigs to see their capacity. Right click to open the attachment interface and add pockets/carabiners,etc. Not all LBEs can accept pockets, some come as is.

For the legs i use the Large Thigh Rig, one in each leg, Medics get the Casualty one, it has a black cross on it and can still accept pockets attached to it. It takes a large Medical Kit, 1 or 2 First Aid kit pockets, syring pockets or carabiners. Other simple combinations are Russian 106 vest or the German Flecktarn, for the legs i prefer the Utility/assault rifle magazine ones. And of course buy 3 piece ghillie suits from Bobby Ray's, Don't bother with that reddish ghillie items you find in Estoni airport. The ones from Bobby Ray can be worn as attachment over armor. With the LBE setup i described above you get a 100% camo.

Concening guns, any sniper rifle that accepts 10x sniper scope, bipod and 7.62x51 match ammo, cold ammo and glasier too are useful. Or the AWM-AI or the DMR. they use .338 Lapua ammo. Beyond that the KVSK is the best anti- material rifle. it takes the PSO-3 scope, 8x but it gets the job done. There are 2 more rifles that shoot .338 Lapua ammo, Erma and Sako-42 but they do not accept silencers. Still they do brutal damage. Keep in mind that sniper rifles will give you better results in the hands of snipers/marksmen. A very good rifle for night ops is the Vychlop. very high damage and comes with a built-in silencer. Give all your mercs a SCAR-H, Bobby Ray is selling sniper version barrels for them. With 7.62x51 match ammo, it's range goes from 40 to 52, add the SV barrel from Bobby Ray, it goes up to a whopping 79 !! Make sure to carry some extra ammo, glasier (same as HP but better) and cold ammo for night ops. Works best on a silenced weapon.

Now, this is more of less my style of playing, sniping and night ops, for the tanks you will need heavy weapons, mortars or bazooka style weaponry, or smoke grenades so you can sneak near them and set explosives, and of course move away before they explode. I prefer to send a stealthy guy halfway close so he can see the target and the ones far behind are using mortars or artillery strike.

I could be writing for a long time but i need to know more about what you need to know. I hope that i have helped a little. Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions. Lastly, listen to everyone's advice but you will have to experiment in a lot of ways. Make use of the mercs's skills (the right man/woman for the right job), stealthy mercs take point during the night, night ops ones take point during the night, snipers are gods with any sniper rifle, much better than anyone else, marksman skill is a close second, auto weapons/ machinegunner for suppression, Heavy weapons/Bombardier for mortars and such, ranger/hunter for the traveling speed and most importantly, the weather penalties. They can see better during storms and so on. Make sure that your teams have a mix of skills.
You'll have to experiment with the gear loadout, what do they need according to their skills, what attaches where, who can work with who without arguments, manage finances, etc. You know the drill from the vanilla game, only here you have a lot more options to spice your game.

Good luck with your 1.13 experience, it may look confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, is much better than the vanilla game, which was already great.

PS Forget the AP ammo unless in a weapon that cannot use match ammo. Match ammo is also armor piercing happy

Consider watching Bigalmoho's YouTube Play Through, it's a decent showcase of how recent 1.13 versions can be played.

Regarding LBE, I don't use modular items much, they usually weigh more than similar non-customizable stuff. I'll admit though, carabiners and medical pouches are great, and there are some interesting setups for modular backpacks. When trying out different configurations, remember you can click an empty attachment slot to see a list of items that fit there and ctrl-click an attachment to remove it.

I have seen that issue from time to time, at least parts of the game window were white and/or flashing. It's a display issue that can happen depending on other application windows in the background. If you can't solve it there is one last option to place some DLLs in the game folder which user Starchris linked here.

OK, so. I discovered that windowed mode, in Win 8.1, kind of...sucks. Namely, I cannot minimize (or maximize) JA2's window. I cannot move it or change the size of it. And the bottom of the window doesn't work inside the window.

I don't get that, but have resorted to a .txt file with the item #s I'm cheat-grabbing on one hand, JA2 in fullscreen on the other, and a decent memory. Takes forever to set up gear templates but anyway.

So, new questions! (Not really related but I hope nobody minds...)

1. How do I use radios? I see no way to use them as a backpack as people are stating.
2. How do I command militia - like, at all? Mobile, non-mobile, away from where my mercs are...
3. For some reason, I've captured Drassen but I can't find Skyraider anywhere. Wtf?
4. So, PMC people. How do I use them, how do I reassign them outside of Drassen?
5. How do I equip militia with stuff? Is there a way I can set up a gear template for, say, each class of militia and have them use that?

You can click on the JA2 icon in the task bar to minimize the game and also to maximize it again. Yes, you can't change the size of the window and it's somewhat hard to hit the right spot at the bottom so you can traverse sectors. That's just the way it is.

IIRC you can't use the radio together with a combat pack. That's just the same as with any other backpack which also can't be used with a combat pack. Only exception to that rule is the TIMS combo.

Skyrider is not in Drassen. Search the area around the town...

On radios: I know, but when I click on the radio *all* of the body slots gray out, even when empty. So there's nowhere to put the radio except in the backpack or in hands, but that way it doesn't work.

On Skyrider: Yes, but I looked in the sectors around the town and I get no message about noticing anyone either.

Remove your backpack and put the radio where the backpack was -- you wear it like a backpack.

Talk to the civilians in Middle Drassen -- you should get a hint about where he is. If all else fails here's a spoiler: http://jaggedalliance.wikia.com/wiki/Find_the_helicopter_pilot
