I think this hasn't been addressed yet (based on search).
This is not about switching between single-, burst-, auto-firing modes. This is more like switching between rifle and an under-barrel weapon but for one and the same weapon. This means an under-barrel weapon remains an attachment option. For example switching between firing a shot and a beam.
In the past I had modded weapons to switch mode by exploiting the changing barrel feature. This requires the purchase and storage of the item which allows the weapon (profile) to be switched out. Needless to say it's inconvenient in many ways.
I've come back to this problem since my computer died and I lost the mod. What I would like is a convenient to use mode-changing-feature and a way to change the used-amount of ammo (same "caliber"). For example a gas-base weapon that uses a small amount (1 unit) in one mode and a large amount (4 units) in the other. Of course the amount is based on full rounded ammo units, no fractions. I realize there's no way around changing weapon's profile but setting ammo unit consumption should be possible. Of course "switching" should cost one action (in line with under-barrel weapon switching).

The plasma rifle was pretty much this. It had a normal, singleshot mode (normal insofar as it fired bright blue plasma balls) and a second mode, toggled by pressing b], where it fired a 'charged' shot (read: plasma grenade) for the cost of 4 bullets.
It did work, and could be implemented again, but I don't see where that would fit with any of our more realistic weaponry. Perhaps it could be used to make the simultaneous firing of both barrels of the sawed-off better instead of using a burst, but that's not exactly a huge gain.
I don't get the 'dual wield single shot mode' part. How is that new? Single shot in dual wield mode has been a thing since v1.00, since 1.13 we can also dual-auto...

YES! exactly, it could probably work by shooting the top gun on the merc's inventory first, if you want to switch just press RMB like you would to switch weapons normally...
or when switching between fire modes (or sights) have a little "L/R" or something like that next to the icon.
