Hi people,

Last time I've played JA2 1.13 was 7-8 years ago (judging from my last file backup).
Due to that 1.13 version no longer working on my pc I went for the latest one and am a bit shocked about the numerous changes you made since then. Some good, but some are absolutely game-breaking for me. It feels like you went overboard on a lot of aspects, turning the game into some sort of simulation instead of... a game.
Thankfully most things are addressable through your .ini editor, but there are a few things that I can't seem to find a fix for. The most important one being:

1 - Nights are way too dark/maps are too dark at night. I can live with the fact that my characters can't see, but I can't see anything either! Did someone blow up the moon?
Seriously though, is there any way to return map brightness to what it was? I always enjoyed skulking through the night but playing in a pitch-black void is really fun-killing.

2 - Characters seem to be really happy to walk around while aiming down the sight, which, for some inexplicable reason, sucks the air right out of their lungs. And I don't really want them to walk around while aiming to begin with, since they then miss everything that's happening to the left and right of them.
So far I haven't seen a quick key to make them stop aiming, and making them switch to another stance and back just to stop them from aiming is getting a bit old.
Is there any way to get around this?

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

2. Swapping weapons by rightclicking on a weapon slot in team panel lowers gun. Disable ENERGY_COST_FOR_WEAPON_WEIGHT if you don't like BP drain from walking with raised weapon.

For sight range go into JA2_Options.ini with Notepad++ or similar application and search for ";Modifiers to the sight range in various light conditions".

You can set the sight range for all 15 light conditions.

As for your monitor being too dark for you to see - you'll have to change your monitor settings.

@sevenfm: I spent hours going through all the options but missed that one. Swapping weapons would be annoying as well, but not losing breath when walking with my guns out definitely helps! Thanks for the heads up!

@edmortimer: I tampered with those values but figured they're not the source of the problem. Strangely enough, when I increase my screen's gamma I can see the maps in night time again, but daytime is horridly bright. Very strange, since I haven't had this problem in other games, even old games like Fallout 1/2 which I recently played through.
But from your reply I understand that there wasn't some modding done to make nights darker, so it's definitely a weird problem on my end. That's good to know, so thanks a bunch!

I'm not a night ops guy and I don't do it frequently, but I just went ingame to check out. Yes, it indeed seens very dark, but I'm not sure if the mod did it or it always was like that. Many years since I last played so I cannot make a comparation between my perceptions there and now. But what I could compare is vanilla Wildfire and nowadays 1.13 (I used to play with AIMNAS wich kinda included Wildfire anyway). I can't really see much of a difference between them. What I noticed is that some sectors, especially forest ones, seens to use a darker palette that makes the night looks darker (at least in Arulco Vacantion mod maps), but otherwise it seens the same darkness. I also noticed that Wildfire and I think vanilla JA2 too puts a big light below your merceneries in night time, making them very easily to spot at night, but it's no longer present in 1.13 wich also usually gives the cammo colour to the merc due their equipment and not the colorful regular cloths that stands out more. So I don't think the night is darker now, but some minor changes gives this perception. I may be wrong, tough.

Born, play JA2, die, reload, die again, reload again.

@Victor Tadeu: I definitely never had the problem in the past when playing vanilla, but yeah, I think I have changed monitors twice since I last played it. I'll blame it on my current monitor.
Thankfully it's only bad in swamps and the darker types of woodlands, even though there's still plenty of those sectors. I now attack in the early evening/early morning and avoid midnight battles as much as I can.

making them very easily to spot at night, but it's no longer present in 1.13 ...

The [G] shortcut of vanilla to switch artificial merc lights on/off
was changed to [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[G] in the dev releases at some point,
while [G] again should work in Sevens recent AI_exe releases.

Besides i think overall darkness in game has not changed.
From what i can see running Ja2 on different notebooks and multiple OSs
the brightness is probably mostly related to monitor design,
as exaggerated colors & high contrast is standard,
and latter darkens dark parts of pictures even more(at least for most of the screen crap thats sold),
visible when you use good old crt monitor or cad certified true color panel.
At minor degree it appears also related to video signal interpretion,
i.e. compared brightness for 20y old OS&drivers and later OS+drv on same machine with true color screen,
its definitely brighter on 98se+ than on 10

Changing sight range for specific light condition lvl
as well as increasig their brightness will have impact on game mechanics,
better use 2nd monitor profile for night missions, or accept the effort to adjust screen manually.
