I'm not sure what causes this.

Weapon degrades while shooting (which is normal) but a few moment after combat, usually when it's over, I got a dialog from my merc saying that the weapon just became unusable (durability suddenly dropped to 9%).

As dirt system is disabled, is it caused by temperature ?
It mostly concerned LMG and AR.
The temperature never got above low/medium.
At the beginning of combat all weapons are at 85-100% durability.

Does temperature degrade the weapon while cooling down ?

Overheating and dirt affect the chance that a gun gets damaged upon firing, they don't degrade the status by themself. Are you sure the weapon doesn't already degrade in combat and its merely the dialogue that is late?

I didn't check the weapon after every shot but I'm sure the status suddenly dropped to 9%.

When below 85% the weapon starts to jam, and I got like 1-2 jams during fights, reducing the status to maybe ~70%, that's the worse status I saw when checking it, and next it's a flat 9%, nothing in between !

I'm pretty sure the last 9% happenned by itself, doing nothing.
Combat was over like 2 minutes ago and I was still perfectly able to shoot.

It seems to appear more frequently in desert environments (like wild desert or Tixa recently) which could make me think that dirt is involved but I disabled that feature so :/

I got it : firing in autofire in desert tiles seems to deplete the weapon status drastically.

I tested in Cambria and Tixa :
- In Cambria I only lost a few percentage firing 100 ammo in a few autofire shots
- Same in Tixa the weapon status dropped from 80% to 2%

Dirt system was still disabled.

Is it a bug on my end ?

Hmm. I'm not entirely familiar with the dirt system since it was changed, but it cannot be fully deactivated.

Now, I'm using Ice in Tixa with a 98% M10. If I set DIRT_GLOBAL_MODIFIER to 0.1 (the lowest possible value), I firing 9 30-rnd ball mags lowers the status to 75, overheating is on, BASIC_DEPRECIATE_CHANCE in Item_Settings.ini is 15 (default).
If I set DIRT_GLOBAL_MODIFIER to 1.25 (default value), the gun breaks on the 5th mag.

Perhaps DIRT_GLOBAL_MODIFIER could be lowered a bit.

Oh god yes !

Since the beginning I though I disabled it through the DIRT_SYSTEM option, but it should be in a previous build because there is no longer such option in Ja2_Options.ini

So, if the system is always ON by default, how do I check my weapon's dirtyness ?

In the following screen it used to be by overring the mouse on the gun :

But right now nothing is displayed :/

Dirt increase depends on many factors, the gun itself, attachments, ammo type, sector dirt factor and weather. Firing one mag after the other in the desert during a sandstorm is a bad idea and will quickly break the gun.
<usNaturalDirt> values in "SectorNames.xml" have not been modified so they still come from the old dirt system. If the values are too high for desert sectors I suggest lowering those instead of lowering the global modifier which would make guns super reliable in other sectors.

If you want to know more about the current dirt system check this thread.

Thanks ! I completly misunderstood the status value.
So now the first displayed percentage is the dirt. OK !

I don't know if the present settings reflect the reality but I'm not able to empty a LMG's mag in a desert.
The weapon breaks like mid-way happy. After two suppression fires you are good to throw the weapon away ROFL

Maybe I will consider lowering the desert dirt value ;)

Take note of BASIC_DEPRECIATE_CHANCE. Afaik the default value is still the vanilla one, where headshots reigned supreme, there was no autofire and ammo was much more sparsely. I always set that value way higher, because no MG should break down after just two belts.
