I would like to let the hunter\ranger skill bonus cover assault rifles shot in single fire as well.

Will this edit work?

[Ranger]

; CtH bonus for specialization
BONUS_CTH_RIFLES = 5
BONUS_CTH_ASSAULT_RIFLES = 5
CTH_ASSAULT_RIFLES_EXCLUDE_AUTOFIRE = TRUE

BONUS_CTH_SHOTGUNS = 10

; Percentage APs reduction needed to pump shotguns
PUMP_SHOTGUNS_APS_REDUCTION = 25

; Percentage APs reduction to fire shotguns
FIRING_SPEED_BONUS_SHOTGUNS = 10

; This option increases possible aiming clicks for shotguns (you should keep dynamic aiming
; restriction ON for this to make sense)
POSSIBLE_AIM_CLICK_ADDED_SHOTGUNS = 1

; Percentage range bonus for shotguns
EFFECTIVE_RANGE_BONUS_SHOTGUNS = 10

; Percentage reload speed bonus for loading single shells in shotguns
RELOAD_SPEED_SHOTGUNS_MANUAL = 15

The ini and xml files are just holding parameters for the game to work with. Without code to read those parameters and use them in a certain way they don't do anything. So no, your edits won't have any effect.

Before you ask, no I will not implement this change because it runs contrary to the ideas behind the traits which are supposed to make all weapon types useful instead of an "AR covers all" approach.

I do agree with the "AR covers all" dilemma, it just made sense to me that's all. At the moment I think the skills should be revamped slightly to make other weapons more attractive, because as of now the AR trumps all fields.
I did make a post for some loose ideas behind skill changes in the feature request thread. Please take a look and see if you like them. Sadly I am not a coder so my only input would be constructive criticism and ideas.
All things aside you guys are doing an amazing work on this old gem.

I do agree that your suggestion makes sense. Why shouldn't someone who is good with semi-auto rifles not aim as well with a semi-auto AR? After all we have the same functionality with the gunslinger and (semi)automatic pistols.
The reason is really just design and balancing. ARs have always been extremely powerful so if we apply the hunter bonus to them as well it would make them even more powerful. Btw. the hunter/ranger is more focused on shotguns anyway. I believe the rifle CtH bonus was just a goodie to make rifles a bit more interesting. Sandro was the one who invented the new trait system but he wasn't around for some years. Maybe today he would do things a different way.

True and agreed.

But doesn't the Marksman Trait, which is basically the single shot rifle bonus trait, likewise give an extra aim click on shotguns, and slightly better CTH on all weapons? I'm going to have to check that and revise this post.

UPDATE:

Yes, Marksman trait is the one for rifles (it also has some specific Sniper Rifle bonuses, but I'm not listing these below), not autorifles. But it also does AT LEAST the following (the other bonuses are a tad unclear on what weapons they apply):

1) -5% effective range using any weapon for aim calculations (PER THE LAPTOP TEXT, not so clear in Skills_Settings.INI)
2) +10% aiming bonus per aim click (except handguns) per the Laptop info mouseover of owned Mercs, mousing over traits.
3) Makes aiming faster with "Rifle-type guns" by one aim click, whatever that actually means (it isn't a rifle, it isn't bolt-action rifle, it is a rifle-type gun ... ooookaaaay, got it ... not)

So per the laptop which may or may not agree with the Skills_Settings.ini text (they vary from each other), Marksman/Sniper does have some bonus which apply to shotguns, and more. So maybe the idea is to take Hunter and Marksman.

My current IMP is Marksman/Hunter/Athletics and so far, in early going, working out really well with 80 Marksmanship start and the .45 Beretta Storm. This means one level of each trait only for her.
