The biggest problem in Rev from JA1 was that he'd run off in the middle of the night with your money and you couldn't hire him back. Regardless of that, I would love to see him and a slew of other aim oddballs be reintroduced to the series. JA2 was great and had some memorable characters, but they pail in comparison to the unique quirkiness of the original. Anyone remember Kaboom (wisdom 13, explosives expert), Raffi Levon, or Biff's archnemisis Turtle? Ok, so they probably aren't worth remembering, they were just fun. Very Happy

LOL. No doubt taking the money to help feed the poor. Smile

I'm thinking that I've gotta get my hands on a copy of JA1. The more I hear about it, the more fun it sounds.

Rev1, you really should try to find a copy of it. If you can't find one to purchase you can grab it off of http://www.the-underdogs.org/ but that version probably won't have the speech files. Another pitfall is that it's a dos/win 3.1 game so it might take some work to get it running on newer machines... fully worth the effort though.

Barry, Grunty, Blood, Wolf, Raven (at a reasonable price) Trevor, Grizzly, Carlos, and Ira. Yes, I said Ira Surprised Take the time to train her, and she usually out classes several people by the end of the game( but, for the love of God, change her voice!) Oh ya, and Dynamo.

What about creating new mercenaries? I mean, it would be quite interesting to throw a former Mossad agent into the mix, maybe a British type modeled after Ian Fleming's Bond. AIM has too many Americans, and they could always use more...diversity is the word we'll use.

Dr. Q was OK...he was stereotypical but hey, this is Jagged Alliance! As long as Grunty does not become a Nazi, I'm fine. The only person I want to leave is Monica, because of her uptight nature. She was a kindergarten teacher! She should not be a mercenary.

People that should be kept out (keep them as hirable civs or NPCs)

Buns: Fights with everyone.

Dr Q: Capable but boring. He could open a spa or a small clinic where you could get your mercs patched up by this fortune-cookie on legs.

Len: A "love him or hate him"-guy. His by-the-book-manners are entertaining for a minute or so but he must be 60 soon and AIM should "promote" him as an firearms-instructor or something, maybe he could be a random encounter with a survival shop or sitting by a lake fishing.

Barry: Never used him because he can

I actually like Buns. It's a little annoying that she doesn't get on with too many people but her griping is pretty funny.
I'd settle for any excuse to keep Len around. He's my favorite merc.
Grizzly's cool too. That guy is a must have. I always hire him right away and keep him till the end (either his or mine).
In fact I'd prefer if they kept pretty much all the existing mercs and just added new ones. Heck, they could even use the same voice files and I'd be happy.

YES !!! YES !!! Finally found someone who share the same sentiments wif me. PLS BRING BACK SKITZ !!!!!! I just love his bad boy image. Nose ring, studds and he is a skinhead.
His stats are lousy and that may be the reason why gamers avoid using him. But he got THE attitude and image. Pls bring him back, perhaps wif better stats this time.

I know that the character creation is a major component of developing a game, and can be one of the most difficult, since you've gotta have real people to do the lines, but I think that having more mercs in general would certainly add to the game. Perhaps there could even be a core group of "bad" mercs that get a kick out of killing civilians, and get bored if you don't kill some. ... Maybe a bit more in terms of rivalries too. For instance, the AIM mercs will start to get annoid if you take on too many mercs that aren't professionals. ...

One last thought, instead of just having Mike come after you late in the game, have a real hit squad gunning for you. ... a full team of high level, high stat mercs that won't take your money, and would burst into a scene in which you're already tied up battling 32 bad guys in a sector, hitting you from behind unexpectedly...

(As a real added bonus, create a pool of bad mercs to draw from, and give them enough lines that they could be recruited and used in future mods as recruitable, but evil mercenaries.)

Another idea:keep the emblematic chars for every skill,Wolf,Fox,Grizzly,Lynx,Ice,Magic,Blood,Reaper,Shadow, have Maddog, maybe Razor and Cougar join AIM (and maybe become a professional thief and respectively an expert trainer).
Put the rest on alumni and create alternatives to this old team(hehehe, the dirty dozen!),talented but low level recruits that step on their trails.

JA3 is to take place BEFORE JA2 correct? JA2 took place in the late 90's, and JA3 is to take place in the early 90's.

I hope they don't try to keep the same merc's.

"Unusually Ruthless" Ruban is in UC? Mad

Well, yes. After playing JA1. I understood JA2 a lot better. Though I like the origional better. Odd, eh?

Lots and lots of characters have retired or died, but a large ammount also made it into the 2nd game. I read the entire history\Illumni section on AIM.

I actually really liked Speck. he didn't run very fast. In fact, I spent a lot of time waiting for him to catch up. But he was very cheap, and good at fixing things. And he did amazing work at lockpicking. Since I couldn't be arsed to pick up all those little keys.

How did he fund M.E.R.C. ? He must have found a large ammount of money at some point, and decided to keep it secret.

It seems like lots of people adore Maddog.

"I'm here. I ate every bug on the way. There were many" *fakes his accent\speech*

He always cracks me up. and I loved his psychotic tendancies.

I don't think that wisdom affects physical\reflex attributes, does it? I used to never use someome with low wisdom, but I figure its only really necessary for doctors, mechanics, or. People that need to be able to do things besides shoot and hide behind trees.

I also loved Eilio. He was a very fast running, Mexican-sounding guy.

Hamous as a bad guy? That might be neat...

I... Um. I never played DG. So, I'm probably missing out.

Removing anyone of the Merc's is bound to disappoint veteran players that tend to have there favorites. It did with the removal of so many of the original Jagged Alliance Merc's from Jagged Alliance Deadly Games and then JA2 when it came out. Things are always changing, people grow old and hopefully smarter so they pass the tools of the Mercenary trade to the younger ones that think they are invincible. Then they open up a small business like M.E.R.C. and are content to leave the adventure and risk to others while hopefully making a profit safely from a very dangerous profession.

As long as there is a good selection of new Merc personalities to choose from i see no problem with having new characters in the selection screen. But if the game changes to a situation where you only have four or eight personalities to choose from it will loose a very large part of the enjoyment that came from having so many characters in the rooster. iI will become stale and re playability will suffer.

I think they should just decide who goes depending on what age the Mercs are. Old guys like Red and Gus are likely to retire/take on other roles. Replace the old with the new.

For me, I'm fine with everyone. But i think new mercs should be better than using back some old mercs. Cause keep looking at the same mercs appearing in the game will make the game boring.

Of course, keep some nice mercs like Gus, Len and some others also nice ^^

Among the older charcacters...I liked Smoke a lot. Unfortunately, this silly idiot blew himself up Sad And I liked Spike a lot. And...of course...Mike. I'm still a little bit sad that he got killed during in JA2 Sad

In JA2 Biff's role was extended a lot. He has funny lines and I always liked the nice things that Speck says about him Smile And of cause Gumpy. He has some of the funniest lines in the whole game. And I like: Magic, Sidney, Nails, Grizzly, Bull and Grunty.

mercs that serve as a pilot at the usa or israelie
Air Force
mercs that serve at SAS
and the most important (and i dont understand
why they dont do it) israelie spiceal forces mercs (sayret matkal or mosad or egoz or shldag or shaitit 13)

Hmm...

Personally I wouldn't like to see uber-mercenaries with homogenous backrounds who all served in special units and so on...booooooring. And I mean: Booooooring. Plus, it totally destroys the concept of personality which made the game unique. Homogenity is a step back to "characters" as used in X-Com where "character" is just an euphemism for "unit".

Right on!

If there aren't semi-pros and rank amatures mixed in with the uber mercs the game will lose alot of it's personality.
Besisdes, a big part of my enjoyment of the game is taking some amatur mercs with potential and turning them into killing machines by about day 70 or so. If this is lost, a major part of the challenge and role playing aspect will suffer.

I couldn't agree more!

I remember many posts about that topic. "There is something really satisfying about raising someone out of the depths of uselessness and turning them into a fighting force to be reconed with."

I think its really important to find characters that you love\identify with. For example, I find Fox very annoying, but I have a huge man-crush on Dr. Q .

If you love a character, you'll use them all the time, and eventually their skills and levels will be higher than the top ranking characters. And when your character is able to suprise enemies 9 times out of 10, move without making a sound, interrupt that sniper, or steal weapons right out of the enemies hands and then shoot them with it, you'll know that you have something really special.

Having a marksmanship of 66 or 50 really isn't all that bad. If you hire em from day one and use them often, they'll be level 8 with 97 MKS in no time.

***

In JA1 and JA2. There are a lot of people who seem as though they'd have no business in the hired gun business. In fact, there are some who don't seem properly suited to guard a donut shop, or babysit children. And yet, there they are.

I don't know why, but the idea of someone like Biff going out there and fighting a war really cracks me up. I remember the first game, where he would quit if he took a human life, I wonder how'd he toughen up?

I really missed having Speck on my team. He was an uber nerd and slow moving, but quite likable, and inexpensive too. He could also open nearly any locked door in one go, once he got there.

***

Hehehe. I love the idea of using Hillbillies and ex-convicts and mental institution excapees to overthrow the evil empire and save the world.

Yeah, all gods would make the game silly. That's not to say that I don't use people like Shadow, Trevor (my two favorite AIM mercs), and Len (but Len only since I've been able to modify his Evolution to 'normal'...way back when I realized he could't develop, I stopped using him). I also really dig Thor, Sidney, and Buns. But I always hire hacks like Razor, Gasket, and Bull. Really, I would like a more graduated system of character development; it's already stat-based, on Wisdom, but maybe they should throw in a stat called Drive, or Integrity, or something. Slow down the advancement of skills, when you only have 100 potential degrees of advancement. Or maybe kick the stat limit to 1000, to make any rise more incremental.

Absolutely!

Slowing down the stat progression (or at least having it toggleable) or better yet having it linked to something like a character class would be great. I really hope the 1.13 can get this done and also hope the Ja3 developers have heard this times it has been mentioned.

Hee-eey! You guys are forgetting someone. Or am I seriously the only one who likes Leech? (You remember, the stubborn badass who looked a whole lot like Hitman, Cliff, and Bob.) He was just awesome! "In a minute, I ain't finished yet!" I also hope Trevor stays.

EDIT: My first post here. Hi everybody!

Oh, and one other thing. It would be pretty cool to see Carmen Dancio to quit his job as an international bounty hunter seeking more steady paycheck and join either one of the organizations. Pry AIM, he's way too calm and collected to join MERC.

And then there is this scenario I have been holding in quite precious value. Wouldn't it be way cool if Fidel and Red quitted AIM to create their own organization BOOM? They would offer only the best old-school explosive experts. And our favorite Aussie Trevor would hate every single one of them.
