I see people talking about placing their mercs in a U formation/pattern & I'm not sure what they're talking about. Could someone clarify this and give some tactical advice on how to use this formation effectively?

on the map you plce yer team inna big semi circle/u-formation spread out over a fairly wide area..once its set..have the most central merc fire off an unsilenced shot...the enemy walk into the trap more or less and you have basically 3 points covered..also..always place yer mercs in the crouched and aimed position..when aimed...if you have a scope..the LOS is alot longer

Okay I see. But aren't the flank-mercs vulnerable for enemies coming in from the side? (Especially in 1.13 where they seem to do alot more of these flank-maneuvers.) Or are you supposed to have everyone facing outwards most of the time? But then again.. once one of the guys at the end points of the circle fires and breaks cover, won't the enemies target him instead?

yer circle isnt tight and close..its wide and spread out..they cant come down on you..only up..into your line of fire..and having the center guy fire makes em go towards the center of a trap that can close down and up on them its a gauntlet effect

see..they'll go for guy in center as thats where sound came from..you have guys above and below that can fire up and down on anything that enters that semi-circle

That makes sense. I think I've been using a too tight/little half circle when trying similar tactics. Thx for the tip.

I always break my force into 2 teams, placed a short distance apart. If one encounters trouble, the other team is in a position to outflank the enemy.

Kovax: That is standard Israeli advance tactic - two units move together on same line in radio distance - when one finds enemy second tries to flank it - very effective

The problem is you almost always need 2 squads of decent mercs to pull this off so you can't really use this tactic from the beginning unless you cheat. 6 mercs just isn't enough to protect your flanks to pull this off and not get overrun by enemies unless you're at a choke point like a fence opening. The more mercs you have, the better they can cover each other and the less falling back you have to do if you're swarmed and break formation. Another problem with 1 squad is if you're too spread out and everyone is scoped and have limited vision and you're still quite vulnerable

I always end up going in a V formation the opposite of the U that way when the lead guy gets overwelmed he can pull back with little or no trouble.
